Drubell: I've noticed something about Romney from the way he talks. When you hear him talking like a normal person, that's the stuff he actually believes. But sometimes he goes into some sort of "character." He'll widen his eyes like a boy's, he'll talk gently and smoothly. I think that the times where he puts on that character is when he actually knows that what he's saying is BS.

To be fair, Obama does this too. Basically whenever he starts acting angry and ranty he's pulling a character and whatever he's saying is bullshiat. Shorter, less complex sentences, fewer rhetorical hiccoughs, a smoother, more practiced elocution. Which is convenient since I tend to disregard people yelling at me anyhow.

I guess it's probably for the best that neither candidate in the race is particularly subtle.

//This is a comment on style and rhetoric only, not the inherent worth of either candidate. Were I to make such a comment, it'd be more obviously slanted in favor of Obama because, c'mon, Romney? Seriously?

I think there's a portion of America that's still has trauma and fear from the terrorist attacks of September 11

Like a collective PTSD. Still trying to put things the way before the attacks

Nadie_AZ: Rupert Murdoch, the most powerful voice in conservative media with The Wall Street Journal and Fox News under his control, said on Twitter that "Romney must draw clear line: offer specific path to restore American dream...To win, Romney must open big tent to sympathetic families. Stop fearing far right, which has nowhere else to go."

So the Far Right has nowhere else to go? Well ... bye.

I know it'll shock everybody, but I don't think Murdoch is in favor of Romney winning.

If Romney wins, Adelson becomes the most powerful fat cat in the Republican Party. The Koch brothers stay at #2 and #3, and Murdoch drops from #1 to #4. Rupert isn't big on dropping in the standings. He's better off if he rips into Obama but Romney wins, especially if Fox makes it sound like Romney isn't "their guy". He can push Adelson into obscurity and maybe the Koch brothers too. This has nothing to do with Conservative vs. Liberal, it's about how much control they have over the country.

I've been feeling this vibe from Fox for some time. They've had their little digs at Romney, implying that they (Fox News guys) are on the outside looking in. Look at Greta's posts from the press pool, for example.

Fair point, going on in great detail about history and solutions doesn't qualify him for the title 'wonk' when it's all based on twisted delusions. Fantasy wonk?

By this point Romney talking in greater detail about his policies is like Romney releasing more tax returns.

/ie. He's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.

Sucks to be Mitt.

bdub77: InmanRoshi: I don't even consider Romney a flip-flopper, he's just a business man. He's trying to sell a widget, Romney The President. You change your marketing and advertising accordingly to your targeted consumer base. There's no higher principles or beliefs involved here. He's fighting giving specifics the same reason Hormel fights food labeling. No widget maker wants you to know there's lips and arseholes in the bologna.

Except he never really ran a company other than Bain Capital, which required no marketing and was basically like a lamprey eel, he'd attach Bain to some sad sack company with cheap stock, saddle it with debt and suck its guts out. If the company somehow survived, awesome, more food. If not, discard the carcass and move on.

This is why I get the urge to defecate every time I read some pundit motor mouthing about Romney being a "businessman". He was NEVER a businessman. A businessman makes something or provides a service people are willing to pay for. He has employees. Infrastructure. Payroll. And customers. Romney was nothing more than the model for Gordon Gecko. Shiat, he couldn't run MY business, and I'm still at single-digit employees.

hmm, wonder why Obama appointed him to that post? no way it could have been for this exact reason.

Don't think so. This was back in 2009 - well before he mastered the art of trolling Republicans

I vaguely remembered reading this article back when he first went to China.

He's been trolling these fools for a long time.

This spring, Obama's 2008 campaign manager David Plouffe was quoted as saying the only Republican who made him feel "a wee bit queasy" about the 2012 race was Huntsman. Soon afterward, Obama made his offer to Huntsman, who reportedly was only a few weeks away from launching his own exploratory presidential campaign committee.

He can't. He simply can't. The compartmentalization required to appeal to the derp means that he's adopted positions that are mutually exclusive.

The details will either infuriate the halfway-sensible folks, infuriate the social conservatives, infuriate the libertarian-esque, or piss of the money bags.

Romney giving details is the surefire way to destroy his campaign.

missiv: Serious Black: The problem is that if Mitt Romney starts filling in the details to his various plans, he's going to alienate either the base or the middle, if not both at the same time.

Nah, he would have to justify his concepts, and sell us on his ideas. His budget plan would have to be an actual plan, with finite steps to achieve his final totals. He doesn't really seem like the kind of person with the patience to try. I'm curious at this point; did companies just let him and Bain come in based on his reputation? Then, he crushed them into fine exported dollars and domestic debt.

No, if you read the article in Rolling Stone it's made clear he did the right and honest thing, paid off the top execs with huge bonuses so they wouldn't put up a fight.

Some wonk on conservative AM radio was droning on last night about the GOP's catastrophic shift to the left started by Reagan, begging Mittens to turn back the clock and embrace purity. Turn it back to when, I have no idea.

Well, they do have a point. Reagan was pretty leftist compared to some of the louder republicans. Enormous deficit spending, higher taxes (true he was big on trickle down but in practice, nothing like Dubya), "palling around with terrorists", somewhat liberal on socialist issues, at least for the time. You know the Republicans have gone full retard when they start shiatting on Reagan for being too leftist.

Oh, I'd say about 1938-45 Germany.

Obama is much better for rating and circulation. No "enemy" to rail against and they just become a 24hr circle jerk of right wing propaganda and pats on the back. No TEA party idiot wants to see that, they want to be on the edge of their hover-round chair, hearing what the next big threat to liberty is and how they, as honest and true patriots, can fight back.

Whereas this liberal independent would never vote for Romney, I gave a long hard look to huntsman and was impressed. If the farking GOP wasn't so goddamned retarded and married to their far-right extremes, we could have been looking at a much different voting scenario. Not that it matters any, but since you mentioned it. His Chinese has been criticized as being sub kindergarten, even when he knows he will be asked in advance to demonstrate his mad Chinese skills. I don't know if it's any better than Condi's tremendous grasp on Russian that we could never hear enough about back in the days when they were trumpeting all of her virtues. When she went to Russia once, the press asked her simple questions in rudimentary Russian and it was a *blink blink gulp* kind of affair.

Yep. Same reason Obama won't explain how he will unscrew the budget. The voters want more services and less taxes and they don't vote for people who tell the truth.

Which makes the Paul Ryan choice weird. Paul Ryan is a good answer to the question, "if I want low taxes, what kind of services can the government provide?" Why nominate the guy who is willing to follow the train of logic to the station if you are not willing to board?

Romney appears to be ok with not really trying to win. It's O double D. This is the ruthless vulture capitalist that people have been so upset about??? if you were running an enterprise and he threatened to take over would this guy worry you? Not me. He seems very tame, muted, benign and impotent. For Christ's sake throw a god damned dog on the roof, scream during a speech, fire somebody, hire somebody, move the furniture and run your campaign like your fuking hair is on fire. And if you never wanted to run full tilt boogie, you should not have run at all. He reminds me of Bush the elder checking his watch during a debate. Pathetic.

I hope I avoid speeding trucks and the bubonic plague for the next four years, because I can hardly wait for the presidential election of 2016.

It's the year Democrats will be flat out of ideas (unless Americans suddenly develop a taste for centrist socialism) and Republicans will be flat out of credibility (unless Americans suddenly develop a taste for Theocracy Lite).

Meantime, I repeat my mantra: Romney's candidacy 2012 = McGovern's candidacy 1972
