Smartest thing I ever heard him doing.

2012-09-11 03:53:46 PM
I was waiting for this.

There should be a law- only be allowed to run for 1 position at a time. This way he's all in or all out.

And for the record, McCain was not up for re election in 2008. He was re elected in 2010.

Does Ryan have anything resembling a real race for his seat in Wisconsin?

2012-09-11 03:55:39 PM
Meh, this is kind of the MO of every candidate from one branch of government running for another.

Dusk-You-n-Me: Joe Biden, Like Paul Ryan, Ran Congressional Ad During His VP Campaign

That. And: if Ryan also wins the Senate race, after he steps down to take the VP chair Gov. Walker can appoint a Republican to the Senate, without too much complaining that it should have gone to a Democrat or that there should be a run-off election. Will of the people, and all that.

I don't know, but it'd be damn funny if he went 0-2 in November.

Was Dole the last guy to actually resign his seat to run for POTUS?

Pretty standard ops, what Ryan is doing. Non-story.

If Paul Ryan wins the Senate race, Tommy Thompson is going to be PISSED.

Not so fast.  He could step down from VP and keep the Senate seat.

Technically, yes. You could give a bit of a stretch and include Gore in 2000, but he was gonna end up NOT being the Vice President regardless of how that election ended.

Lieberman, Kerry, Edwards, McCain and Palin all kept their posts while running for President or VP; then-Senators Obama and Biden only resigned after winning the 2008 election. I see no reason why Ryan shouldn't be allowed to do the same.

Meh. Non-issue. He's legally allowed to run for both races at the same time. I'd do the same thing in his shoes. Hell, if I were Joe Biden in 2008, I'd have done the same thing there too.

Fine theory, except Wisconsin law does not allow a governor to make interim appointment for vacant US Senate seats, but rather prescribe a special election to be held for that seat to be filled.

Nah, bro.  If he wins both he upgrades to a senate seat.  Haven't you ever watched Dragon Ball Z.

This is not a fail.

This is what every politician does if they are chosen for VP and they are also up for re-election.

Biden did it, and got the same dumbass "Fail" treatment.

What would be amusing is if he lost both the VP slot AND his House bid. It would definitely be good news... for Obama.

It would, because when Ryan loses the VP slot and wind the house seat he's just going to be another obstructionist douchebag dedicated to nothing but making Obama's life harder.

I think there's a good chance of that. He seems to have been skating by in his district based on being vague. Not a lot of recognition, and he brought home lots of federal pork. Now, he's out there in the national media every day. people are seeing him for the lying scumbag he is.

Aside from it being Article I, Section 2, Clause 4 of the US Constitution that requires "When vacancies happen in the Representation from any state, the executive authority thereof shall issue writs of election to fill such vacancies", rather than Wisconsin law governing.

Same net effect.

When he wins neither I will once again believe in cosmic justice.

I see no problem with this, he simply wants to know that he will continue being employed after after this election and is hedging his bets.

What's wrong with that? It's bootstrappy to have a back-up plan.

Do you really consider it 'running for VP'? He didn't get 'nominated' to run or anything. Romney asked him to be his veep if he (Romney) is elected president. There isn't a VP election.

I'm ok with this and as has already been said, Joe Biden did the same thing.

Romney has more money than he can spend from donations from "special" interests. When he loses it's not going to be from lack of cash.

They probably just do generic "look how great I am" ads anyway, so it functions as both a Ryan ad and also a Romney/Ryan ad.

Wisconsin law can place requirements on what has to be done to issue a writ of election though.
