It's always been site policy, they've just articulated it for the first time.

2012-09-11 02:16:33 PM
So that's their new policy? Based on their (perceived) reputation alone, this sounds like a policy that /b/ should put to the test.

Yeah, Politifact is completely, 100% biased against the GOP.

The GOP is getting really butthurt over the existence of fact checkers.

Yeah GOP, it sucks for you because you have to constantly lie about pretty much everything, and people point this out.

Welcome to the Post-Truth Republican Party.

Red state must be employing mind readers to get information on posters intentions.

The Republicans are really gaining some amazing proficiency when it comes to shooting themselves in the foot.

It astounds me that they think this is going to *help* in any way.

this is what happens when you live in "the bubble." when you get your news from fox and am radio. not just opinion, but "facts" too are bent to your worldview. this is akin to teaching a child that he can fly. the trouble is, when he finally opens that attic window to soar, he ends up plummeting to his death.

facts are stubborn things; they remain true whether you believe them or not.

"you don't like, start your own blog and run it any way you want. The fact that we're still here after 8 years, still strongly conservative, and remain the most widely quoted conservative blog is because of the moderation and the fact that we don't spend our time arguing with the left."

They make "we live in an echo chamber and like it that way" sound so principled! *snort*

Nothing new here at all. This backlash against fact checkers is just a variation on lobbing charges of a vast conspiracy of liberal bias throughout the media, which has been going on as long as I can remember.

Or stated another way, if you don't like the message, kill the messenger.

Off the top of my head...

The NAZI party was socialist.
Extending the Bush Tax Cuts for the wealthy will reduce the deficit.
Obama raised my taxes.
Obama wants your guns.
Obama robbed MEDICARE.
Obama took a trip costing 200 million dollars a day.
Obama has grown the government more than any president in history.
Freddie/Fannie and Barney Frank caused the economic meltdown.
2010 promise of Jobs Jobs Jobs.
Obama has passed more regulations than any other president in history.
The Party of "Family Values"
President Obama is soft on terrorism/won't protect the country/is a Muslim sympathizer.
President Obama wasn't born in the United States.
Income is not all that unequal.
The poor are 'not poor' because most of them own a refrigerator.
Taxing the rich will slow economic growth.
Taxing the rich would not raise much money.
Anything is possible if you are 'bootstrappy'.
The poor do not pay taxes.
Saddam had WMDs.
Death panels.
They hate us for our freedom.

If the GOP was Pinocchio, we would have an unlimited never-ending supply of fossil fuels and the timber industry would never have to plant another farking sapling.

I saw someone post in a "friend's" political rant the other day on FB. They wrote a short bit of nonsense and when a friend of mine asked them to back it up their statement with a reference or example they proceeded to go crazy about how they don't have to answer for their posts and can say whatever they want. Their contention was that they can spout off with whatever they like and anyone who challenges them or questions them is "wrong" and needs to "mind their own business". They literally said, "I didn't come here to debate."

Some people are nuts and there are places they congregate (besides Facebook).

Facts???

Many conservatives don't believe in evolution or global warming.

Their president is a Kenyan Socialist who wants to take everyone's guns, nuke Israel and give Alaska back to the Russians.

Oh yeah when called out on facts there are a couple responses:

The "All fact checking organizations are liberal media sources! They're all owned by the most liberal people on the planet!"
The "Whatever that is talking about is wrong, I have the facts right here at Brietbart!"

And my favorite is the turtle.. When making a point with facts the reply might be, "Well when democrats talk it's a waste!! lol ha"

Sadly enough, I wrote the following eight years ago in an opinion piece. At the time I felt I was being a bit hyperbolic:

Its one thing to filter news through your own partisan lense, giving more weight to things told to you by people that agree with your politics; it's a natural human impulse. However this impulse is being manipulated by consevative media and political leaders into a much more powerful weapon. Instead of just trusting them, Conservative leaders want their followers to drink a much more potent brand of cool-aid, and accept that reality is no more or less than exactly what they say it is.

They no longer want them to have to filter at all. They simply want them to ignore inconvienent facts altogether. By politicizing news, they are undermining the very notion of truth, facts, and the existance of a common basis for rational political arguments.

Once upon a time, we could argue about what the news meant ( eg Ollie North-felon or hero?) but we were constrained by the basic facts of the issue ( ie arms were sold to Iran to finance the Contras and it was illegal at the time). Not anymore, now, we have a framework where the facts themselves are as slippery and dependant on viewpoint as opinions were a decade ago. Facts (especially as reported by the media) are mere means of achieving a political agenda and therefore ignorable by anyone opposed to that agenda

I've encountered that sort. My standard reply is that you are welcome to your own opinions, but not your own facts and, if that bugs you, you know how to defriend me.
