extroverted_suicide: If it's so great, why did it come out after the 360 and PS3, yet is going away well before them?

Came out same month as the ps3 I think. It's going away because nintendo tends to kill support for the previous console when the new one releases. MS did the same to the xbox.

Sony seems to be the only one to do support/dev for older consoles after their replacements hit. The psone and ps2 had a very long life, and the PSP is still getting plenty of love (in japan at least). The DS is getting a bit as well, then again, it was popular as hell.

The My Little Pony Killer: Oh gosh, I'll be skipping over that one then. I have two games for my DSi that I absolutely love, but I hate the way it makes my hands cramp up and my eyes hurt.

It's a ipad-sized screen, with control buttons on the side. Eyes shouldn't be a problem unless you can't change focus quickly. It'll cramp your hands in completely different ways from the DSi :-)

I don't know if I like the new controller for Wii U. It looks far too clunky

tdyak: Still play Super Mario Bros. Wii, Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros and Mario Party on a regular basis with my kids. It's a great little console for me.

For playing any "serious" games (FPS, RPG, etc.) I still use the PC.

Yeah, I'm like this as well. If I want to play a FPS or something I'll generally grab those type of games off Steam. I've never liked FPS games on consoles regardless of which console it is anyway.

For me the Wii is either something to play Nintendo-made games on (Zelda, Mario Galaxy, Metroid, etc...), something to play with the nieces and nephews (Wii sports, Wii Resort, Mario Party), or something to break out at a casual party (also Wii sports and Mario party, Guitar hero, Boom blocks). The Wii did pretty much what I expected it to do, along with allowing me to go retro and download games from the generations of consoles I missed. For the price, it was a great investment.

My first Wii broke and sat as a dust collector for a few years. Finally I had to do something with it so that I could play Skyward Sword. I played a good deal of Skyward Sword when I wasn't playing Skyrim then my son was born and I stopped playing for a few months. Just finished it the other day and I thought it was another great Zelda game.

I've beaten both Zelda games on the Wii and loved them. Super Mario Galaxy was great, but never got around to playing the second. There were a good number of games that I also enjoyed on the console.

I see Resident Evil 4 and Samba De Amigo above. Those were great games on the Gamecube and Dreamcast. The Dreamcast version of Samba De Amigo was so much fun with the maracca controllers.

That thing was great at parties for super smash bros. Thats about it. I know a lot of people who have a wii just sitting with their tv, who I have never seen use it or talk about it.

/Still use my ps 3 daily

All y'all can suck it. We have a great time, my Wii, the wife and kids and I, and I've no plans to upgrade until the new Zelda comes out and I have to do so. Still playing my favorite Gamecube games too and Tiger Woods golf.

It doesn't play DVDs. Screw that piece of trash.

sxacho: I just got my first Wii used on Craigslist a few months ago. It came with the new Super Mario Bros and a few other games. It's fun. But then Super Mario stopped working. It said it was a disk error. I could fool it into working every 100th time if I messed with it long enough, and every other game worked fine. So I read about all sorts of other people having this problem, with mixed results. I decided that the lens was probably ready to be replaced, so I ordered one and replaced it. Super Mario still wouldn't work bu the other games were still all fine. So I downloaded Dolphin emulator and now have 4 Wii remotes connected to my pc and I can play the new Super Mario Brothers game with my kids now. It works pretty well. And I still sometimes use the Wii to turn on the light bar.

/riveting is the word you're looking for, bro

You've got to put the disc inside your shirt and blow on it. Works like a charm.

You didnt already have a DVD player?

I like convergence, but i understand their reasons for not including DVD playback...

The WiiU otoh... i probably wont be buying one. If it had blu-ray i absolutely would, but instead im planning on getting a PS3 to replace my aging networked dvd player. But i doubt ill get any PS3 games. Maybe a few PS2 games that i feel like ive missed out on, MGS series, Shadow of the Colossus, Katamari Damacy... well, ok, maybe Red Dead Redemption.

Good luck. If I recall correctly, they've pretty much done away with backwards compatibility on the PS3.

Somehow I don't think paying a license fee to Sony for each console is high on Nintendo's to-do list.

The whole thing for Nintendo is, and always has been, they don't really worry about what some self-styled diehards want, they try to figure out how to get people interested who no one else is really attempting to interest. With the Wii they ended up with people they likely never thought of playing their games, I know many retirement communities got Wiis because with a Wiimote the seniors can move and do things that take little more than some hand eye coordination. Also it turns out the seniors love it. Plus various places doing physical therapy got Wiis because they found out some of the games are great for their purposes. Nintendo isn't going to go down the colors and polygons rabbit hole, because that's not really their thing. They think about how games are played, not how shiny the reflections are. Plus it avoids having to get into Sony and Microsoft's slap fight. Which itself is a smart move.

Agreed. Had many a great and cheap night with Wii Sports, a group of friends and drinks. Then again, I don't really get "gamer" culture in general. Ugh, sorry, your crappy video game does not have "a great story". Read Tolstoy.

Sony doesn't own the format, the consortium does. Withholding a feature to save a buck or two is rather a dickish move, to be honest.

I had a blast with mine and continue to do so. Third-party games weren't great, but first-party games rocked the world.

Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2
Mario Kart
Zelda: Skyward Sword
Super Paper Mario
Donkey Kong Country Returns
Metroid Prime Trilogy
Wii Sports
Mario Party 8

And several third-party games were great, like Muramasa: The Demon Blade, Resident Evil 4, Monster Hunter Tri, and Epic Mickey was quite enjoyable.

I watched a play through of the first Pikman game that made me want to try that series. And Cubivore looks like Katamari on crack, if that's even possible. I will definitely keep an eye out for that one. My current desire is Super Mario Sunshine because I've only played other people's copies of it, and the only thing stopping me from having my own is my stupid lack of a freaking job.

Aww. I love my wii, and I think it may be dying.

I'm a pushover for the simplistic lego games and super mario brothers.

We also play boom blox a lot in this household. My husband and I are ridiculously competitive with each other about it.

Also, we made out for the first time after an afternoon of playing mariokart.

Wii supports HD as much as the original xbox did. Both have optional component outputs, all the games top out at 480p however.

I've had my Wii almost since launch, and I've definitely got my money's worth. Accumulated a few dozen games (plus many more downloadable games) over the last six years, most of them very good games.

Granted, it hasn't gotten turned on as much the past year (except for Netlix and Hulu Plus), but much of that is a result of the fact that I am now the father of a one year old, which kind of kills my free time for gaming. But I have played in the past year Zelda Skyward Sword to 100% completion.

No regrets about the wii. I've had a lot of fun with it.

2012-09-11 08:27:33 PM
The worst thing about the Wii going away is that the WiiU won't play GameCube games, which means no more Eternal Darkness, Killer 7, or other great games. At least there's still the Dolphin emulator.

/And it's sad that no good RPGs for the Wii came out until the very end of its life cycle.

My Wii has gotten much more use since I hacked it and put all my games on a USB hard drive.

A word of advice for everybody whose Wii no longer works -- ask your doctor about 36 hour Cialis. I did, and now my Wii is ready whenever the mood strikes.

Seeing that this could well be the last Wii thread for a while (at least until it shows up in a retro / nostalgia gaming thread 5 - 10 years from now), clearly I had to seize the opportunity for one final penis joke.

I think what ultimately doomed the Wii was that too many publishers saw it as a very casual machine, and simply pushed shovelware to appeal to the masses. When these games didn't sell, they just turned their back on it altogether. Meanwhile, these crappy games helped to confirm the belief of gamers that the system wasn't worth their time, and eventually stopped looking into games for the machine.

The Wii is one of the top selling systems of all time, and even if a smaller percentage of users are hard core compared to the 360 and PS3, it still could have earned top sellers among serious gamers. Almost all of the Call of Duty games made their way to the Wii, and despite absolutely zero promotion whatsoever, they were still able to sell a million copies each. Many fans actually prefer the Wii versions, as aiming with the Wiimote is more accurate than a thumbstick and more engrossing than a mouse.

Graphically, while not as advanced as Microsoft and Sony's machines, many publishers and developers simply became lazy. The system was about as powerful as an Xbox 1, yet too many games looked like PS1 titles. Not to mention that in an era of multi-million dollar development budgets, the Wii's simple hardware could have allowed developers to produce gorgeous looking games (even if they didn't have the most polygons or highest resolutions) at an affordable price.

TLDR; despite being the best selling platform of this generation, the Wii's life has been cut short due to short sighted publishers and Nintendo's lack of leadership.

Every single person I know that owned a wii ended up letting it collect dust in their closet after they realized its just cartoon and kid based games, it may be great if you have family coming over all the time but it gets old really quick for adults.

Wii.

Many great mainstay Nintendo series entries - 2 Zeldas, Smash Bros, Metroid Prime, Sin & Punishment
The definitive version of Resident Evil 4.
The best and purest 3D platformers
Tons of quality 2d platformers
So many of the best or the very original of genres - Xenoblades, Red Steel 2, Smash Bros, Rhythm Heaven.

No regret. Worth all the money, it was an incredible run. Sure the Wii didn't get all those dudebros shooters, but damn if it didn't get all the unique titles.

Mawson of the Antarctic: Girion47: I hacked mine, have all Wii games on an external hardrive, and all 850 SNES games on a SD card that I can play, my Wii is far from being bid farewell.

Things like this reaffirm to me that progress is happening. I still remember zip disks and there's no way the old one would hold any photoshop file I'm doing today.

Little envious, I'd rather play old SNES than anything out there.

I get my SNES fix from an old xbox softmodded to run linux and an SNES emulator. That plus a wireless logitech controller has given me hours of enjoyment especially with save states and the black and white buttons being fast forward and rewind. I also used to run XBMC on there but I've graduated to Ubuntu on an Apple TV for most of that. My 2 xboxes are still hooked up but don't get a lot of use. There are also other emulators the xbox can run, I just enjoy the SNES the best. I have a soft spot for Actraiser and U.N. Squadron.

Softmodding an old xbox is nothing- just need an old xbox action replay and a game to load a hacked save to install Linux. Then you FTP in and load your software and ROMs. Google xbox softmod for more.

Jaws75: I never got tired of the Wii. There was always something cool to play, you just had to know what to get. Okami, Scarface: The World is Yours, Boom Blox, De Blob, Bully: Scholarship Edition, Wii Sports Resort, Cursed Mountain, Dead Space: Extraction, Red Steel 2, the list goes on and on.

The fact that your "best of the wii" list includes old PS2 games pretty much says it all.

Wii Homebrew Guide

All you need is a SD card and the ability to follow instructions. After that you get the homebrew channel - that will be your portal to running all the emulators you need. It even has a service to download them to your console (you gotta supply the Roms, but that's what the SD card is for).

2012-09-12 11:05:52 AM
Once you get the homebrew channel installed you can install SNES9x. It supports save files in the roms, and also allows you to take snapshots of the game as well. To get the roms you need to look for something called a "goodset" that'll be the whole collection of SNES games, and you're less likely to get a virus.
