Marine1: FarkedOver: Marine1: Religious fundamentalists who use violence to further their means. Specifically, in this case, those who follow militant Islam

Why is militant islam at odds with the US? Do they hate our freedoms? Do they have legitimate gripes?

They see Western culture as sinful and a threat to their lifestyle, as well as an obstruction to their efforts to spread theocracy based on the conservative interpretation of Islam. The US happens to be the big player in Western culture.

That is just rich. Two sides of the same coin. I really really wish you had the capability to view things more broadly. I could literally take your statement and change a few words and poof it would be Christians doing the same thing. Islam is irrelevant in your statement. The religious fundamentalism regardless of the cult you follow is the problem.

I'm ok with that. Otherwise it's just tit for tat. It wasn't an honorable act of war, what they did on 9/11. It was a sneaky mass murder of civilians. If that's the language they speak, then I'm ok with disproportionate response.

Proportional response - those building were more expensive than the collection of mud huts and those 3,500 people were worth a lot more than the dirty heathen peasants huddling in said huts.

And said people in "mud huts" had WHAT to do with bringing down said buildings and killing the "more worthy" people?

Prank Call of Cthulhu: You know, it would be one thing if I'd lost so many freedoms due to a competent adversary. I'd still be upset, but I'd at least understand it. But no, the government wants me to live in pants-shiatting terror of guys who set their shoes on fire on planes, or light their cranks on fire on planes, or try to build bombs out of cans of gasoline and firecrackers, or come up with devastatingly clever plots like bringing the Brooklyn Bridge down with a blowtorch, or blowing up the Holland Tunnel so water could flow uphill toward Wall Street, or taking out the Sears Tower with nothing bad thoughts. Hell, the one plan they were successfully able to carry out in this country apparently shot their entire wad of sleeper-cell suicidal malcontents, managed to hit only 75% of its targets, and killed just 3,000 people in buildings that had closer to 50,000 people total in them.

No, rather than some super-genius nemesis, we're supposed to be scared of a bunch of primitive, cave-pooping nitwits who spend most of their time arguing over how much facial hair their sky daddy thinks they should have, the best way to carpet their women, and which ancient statues should be blown up.

Terrorists are morons. They succeeded on 9/11 not because they were good, but because they were reasonably lucky.

The greatest threat to my life is the daily commute to work, the delicious package of bacon in my fridge, and my penchant for power tools coupled with a disinclination toward safety gear. Terrorism isn't even in the top ten list of things threatening me.

But criminals exist! I read about them doing nefarious activities in my town. There's a reasonable chance I might run into them.

Apart from the 19 guys that took a one-way trip to virgin-land, I gotta say, I don't see a lot of terrorists running around this country.

And criminals' schemes actually work. Like, "Hey, nobody's home, let's break a window, go inside, and steal stuff," is a reasonable plan.

"Let me put a can of gas in my car and then put a firecracker on a timer and let the resulting shockwave blow up Times Square" is not a reasonable plan for many reasons, not least of which is that it fails to account for the difference between explosion and combustion.

Terrorists are incredibly rare and generally incompetent, particularly when it comes to attacks in this country by beturbaned, ululating malcontents. Criminals not so much. See the difference?

I went to bed last night thinking that maybe we'd moved beyond the morbid death cult of 9/11. But no, I wake up this morning and some of my friends post "Never forget" on their stupid farking facebooks.

Oh, that we could forget. That we could go back to a time when we don't spend trillions of dollars hacking and slashing at phantoms and wars brought on false pretenses and justified by fears. That we could go back to a time where the only people that expressed the notion that their political opponents were all traitors were complete farking lunatics living in the shadows. That we didn't have to go through this theater of throwing away our cup of coffee and undo our belt and our shoes and let some minimum-wage mall-cop cretin feel us up FOR FREEDOM before we can board a plane to go home for Thanksgiving. That we could stop this morbid never-ending grief musical every September where we turn 3000 bankers and office grunts who were in the wrong place at the wrong time into martyrs of the Second American Century.

I farking hate 9/11. I'm tired of having to pretend that I still care deeply or else I'm some sort of traitor. It's been over a decade. All I said was that the BBC was prophetic - and thanks for the link - because they admit that the building in the shot IS WTC 7, and that they were reporting that it HAD FALLEN while it still stood in the background.

From your link:

"It is certainly true that on 9/11 the BBC broadcast that WTC7 had collapsed when it was still standing. Then the satellite transmission seemed to cut out mysteriously when the correspondent was still talking."

I have wondered how these militant islamists would take it if we gave in to them and set up an country for them to live it according to their professed desires. Set them up in the Sinai, for instance, and let them have it their way...no electricity, no cars, no prepared food, no medicine that did not exist back in the 8th century, no purified water, no radio, no tv, no AK-47's (just swords), eating goat meat cooked over a camel poop fire, living in tents, no sanitation. See how long that lasts before they come down with a kidney stone or diabetes and want medicine or a doctor. How about turning Gaza into another area of no modern convienences for those wanting to go back to the 8th century and letting those wanting to be a part of the 21st century live in the West Bank? I wonder how long it would take for those people to decide that they really didn't want to live like that...that they really want to enjoy the life in the real world.

Since 9/12/01 there have also been a number of terrorist plots thwarted due to increased diligence. Had the extra security put in place not existed, the death toll since 9/11 would have been far higher. Unfortunately, it has also meant that the terrorists have switched to targets in other countries in some cases.

You may whine about your freedom and drone strikes all you like, but when you come onto the field to play football, and the opposing team is carrying AK-47s, don't expect the referees to be there to throw a flag and make the AK-47s go away. Get a gun...get lots of guns.

DaCaptain19: Thunderpipes: Wow, new low for even Fark guys. 3500 people lost family members, you don't care. This is not a left or right issue. Just... wow.

Approx. 10,500 deaths per year from drunk driving alone.

And alcohol is a legal drug.

We have buildings in which the sole purpose of attending is to become too drunk to drive.

Memorialize THAT.

We drink because of liberal silliness. It is our only escape from hippies.
