So you're a policeman...and you seriously don't know better than this? I don't care what your politics are. The same stupidity would apply if this were 5 years ago and we were dealing with a left-leaning cop while Bush was in office. There are certain lines you just don't cross, especially if you're a civil servant allowed to carry firearms.

At times I'm absolutely astounded at the number of people who somehow don't seem to grasp that the intertubes are NOT PRIVATE. Oh wait...what's that you said? You have privacy settings in place? Then you're a fool for fully trusting that to the point of making dangerously damaging statements online and expecting that they cannot get out.

Hell, she could have even went so far as to call him dirty names and insult his mother. I know that JFK was hated a lot. Here's one poster that resembles a lot of the anti-Obama warrgarbl. Here are some excerpts from an article written by a Professor of Law at the University of Georgia:

During his presidency, right-wingers utterly detested President John F. Kennedy; and the extreme right-wingers hated Kennedy with a venomous, malignant ferocity bordering on insanity. Because he was a liberal and pro-civil rights, right-wingers-particularly, the segregationists and racists, the opponents of civil rights, the states-righters, the free enterprise loonies, the wealthy ultra-conservatives, the religious bigots, the anti-Castro Cubans, the U.N. haters, and the lunatic fringe anti-Communists-regarded JFK as dangerous, destructive, and downright traitorous.

As William Manchester notes in his classic The Death of a President (1967): "At 3:05 p.m., when 80 percent of the American People were in deep grief, an NBC camera panned toward a group of spectators outside Parkland's emergency entrance and picked up a young man with a placard that read, 'Yankee, Go Home.'" (In a wealthy Dallas suburb, Manchester reminds us, "pupils of a fourth-grade class, told that the President of the United States had been murdered in their city, burst into spontaneous applause.")

William Manchester's book, for example, discusses the "initial glee" with which right-wingers greeted news of the assassination. "An Oklahoma City physician beamed at a grief-stricken visitor and said, 'Good. I hope they got Jackie.'" In Amarillo, Texas, a woman reacted by saying: "Hey, great, JFK's croaked!" Men whooped and threw their hats in the air. Others smiled broadly. Soon, however, the right-wingers realized that their public gloating was a ghastly mistake, whereupon they began concealing their happiness. "[T]hey were anxious to avoid the undertow of public opinion," Manchester says.

There was plenty of hate towards W, but Fox News and Rush have done a good job of convincing the feeble minded that Obama is the worst president of all time. Which is kind of a head-scratcher. You hate the guy that couldn't fix the mess worse than the guy who helped start it?

On the few occasions I have engaged one of these "wish Obama was dead" kinds, I have yet to hear anything that is even remotely reasonable for the hate. There's the "he's a Muslim" and "he wants to turn the U.S. over to the UN" and the ever popular "he wants to take away our guns". In every case I really believe the hate comes down to one simple fact, he's a ni*DING*er.

We still maintain on the words John Wilkes Booth yelled when he shot Lincoln on the Virginia state flag: Sic Semper Tyrannis. The Maryland state song also references the line (the song is outright anti-union, which is not surprising as it wasn't written by a Marylander at all).

Dear Mother burst thy tyrant's chain.
Maryland!
Virginia should not call in vain.
Maryland!
She meets her sisters on the plain.
"Sic semper!" tis the proud refrain.
That baffles minions back amain.
Maryland my Maryland!

When I filled out my security clearance application they asked if I was ever a member of an organization that advocated the overthrow of the government by force or violence. I pointed out I had worked for the Commonwealth of Virginia.

"Hatriot" is the term you are looking for. Generally means people who demonstrate their love of country by spouting off about how much they hate almost everyone in it. After all, according to the right-wingers, nothing is more patriotic than killing non-whites. Especially if they are also non-Christian.

Selective outrage over hyperbolic speech. Hypocrisy at its finest. How quickly the left forgets that vitriol and overt threats made against Bush.

There's the "he's a Muslim" and "he wants to turn the U.S. over to the UN" and the ever popular "he wants to take away our guns". In every case I really believe the hate comes down to one simple fact, he's a ni*DING*erprogressive who wants to fundamentally change or undermine American lifestyle and ideals.

No, having seen the film, the assassination is part of an elaborate left-wing fantasy that allows them to spew rhetoric about Cheney and the Patriot Act in the guise of entertainment. Meanwhile, Obama runs around the country spiking the football about OBL, conveniently ignoring that the intelligence that led to his courier, and eventually to OBL, was obtained by water boarding a member of Al Qaeda.

Sargun: jodaveki: It'd be interesting to see if this kind of sentiment has been expressed as frequently during past presidencies. I just don't recall so much viceral hate toward such as Bush I or II, or Clinton. How about Carter? Or Nixon?

Interesting. What I was looking for was some evidence (ephemeral as it may prove) that this kind of rabid odium has no connection to race. Of course there have always been those who have voiced disgust with the office-holder, but these past four years seem so over-the-top... In my periodic self-reflections I thought the fact that Obama's black might be the reason behind how pronounced the racial overtones seem-- kind of like telling someone to ignore the spot on a white blouse-- but in light of the savage glee at Kennedy's death, and his strong ties to the civil rights movement, I'm more convinced now than ever.

Hmm, maybe in some states I guess. I recently considered going to the academy (despite my age), so I have researched it thoroughly here. The starting pay in Florida is around $38k. Some cities more, some less. But well below median in the USA. The state average for a veteran beat cop, not a sergeant or detective, was in the 40's. About on par for the median income in the US of $44k.

If you say "leftie" as in civil rights and freedoms vs. "leftie" economically and internationally, might it paint a more complete picture? Police are people and aren't one dimensional any more than anyone else in our society.

With that said, I imagine as police forces become more militarized in recent years both in equipment, training - and perhaps mission - it may be harder to support "leftie" officers in either regard.

"Where's Lee Harvey Oswald or John Wilkes Booth when you need them!?!? :)", the posting stated, referring to the assassins of presidents John F. Kennedy and Abraham Lincoln.

Actually, I don't think it does.

"Where's Lee Harvey Oswald or John Wilkes Booth when you need them??"

That statement nowhere implies any future action on the part of the person saying it.

It's equivalent to saying: "I wish somebody would kill the President."

Sorry, I don't see a threat there.

2012-09-11 12:22:59 PM
A couple of things...

1) This is her own police department that took action after a local complaint about the facebook posting. The only reason the secret service is involved is because they were notified by her department.

2) I don't think she's gonna run afoul of the feds, because she skirts a call to action. Her posting was obviously tasteless humor and misplaced frustration.

3) That doesn't mean she won't be fired. She can have all the freedom of speech she wants, but her job - government or not - probably has in her contract that she has to uphold the image, and they can deem this a violation of the contract. Likely, she'll be disciplined and be on paid leave for a bit, since this is a first time offense.

4) Her facebook support page are right, even though they're idiots for supporting her. She has her freedom of speech. They just don't understand the points above. They are likening this to the feds silencing dissent, etc. etc. Likely, they hate Obama, and any way to dig at him, including supporting someone who talks like a fool, they'll put their name to.

5) Without knowing her background or what she said, her pictures show her to be hot. Her comments and obvious mental level, though, lower her on the hotness scale. I can't separate inner and outer beauty.

There was a bunch of this sort of stuff with Bush, too. Some similar Secret Service checkup inspired a libertarian (like a real one, not a Fark Independent TM) friend of mine to set up a website that was just pictures of Bush and guns. Not even in the same photo, or pointed ominously, or anything, just Bush and guns. Sure enough, he earned himself a visit at work. According to him they were pretty matter of fact about it, "Oh yeah, didn't figure it was anything but it's our job to check up on anything and everything," and he was mostly okay with it...until the end when they said, "So you're going to take the site down now, right?" at which point he went all Libertarian free speech whargarble about it. And since he had the opportunity to tell the tale later, I can only assume their response was an eye-roll and putting a checkmark next to 'crackpot'.

Anyway, my point is people getting their panties in a bunch to defend a derper are just as stupid now as then. I overall admire said friend, but..yeah. Till someone's right to free speech is actually infringed, not just receives a sternly raised eyebrow, rushing out to defend it is kinda stupid.

The Secret Service still takes it seriously and looks into it because it can be interpreted as inciting others to commit violent acts on the president. This is also why it's a class D felony. The concept isn't that hard to grasp, silly.

You nailed it when you talked about the militarization of the police. I came up in the tradition that a cop was first and foremost a public servant. We were supposed to protect the people from the bad guys. Then as police became more and more militarized, the people WERE the bad guys. It was bad before 9/11, it was untenable afterwards.

I am not saying cops in my day were always good guys, or always doing the right thing. What I am saying is that at least there was a paradigm that said the people were the important thing, not the system. I no longer believe that to be true.

The winkie face emoticon totally counts when a woman does it. Also, only women can use hearts in their postings. Like, if she'd said, "I would [heart] it if someone would kill Obama" this is valid, non-threatening, and free speech. She may even actually love Obama. As opposed to writing "I would love it if somebody killed Obama." That's a jailing. You guys have to learn how to interpret terrorist jargon.

Truth just came out, it's all Liberals fault and she is the poor, poor victim.

However a severe problem arises when the insanity of Political Correctness and a Liberal Progressive agenda manipulates and abuses these expectations of higher standard to silence free speech with prosecution, intimidation and extortion. The investigation into a Tavares Florida Police Officer is a classic example.

Fair warning, it sounds very Glen Beckish.

John Kerry was interviewed by Bill Maher in October of 2006 on the HBO show Real Time.

Kerry: Or, I could have gone to 1600 Pennsylvania and killed the real bird with one stone.

kid_icarus: Farktastic: robohobo: Free speech, where did it go?

Free speech is one thing, inviting an assassin to take out anyone, let alone the US head honcho, is another thing. Perhaps she should have just said "I disagree with the current president" and left it at that.

Hell, she could have even went so far as to call him dirty names and insult his mother. But she took it a step...nay, an Incredible Hulk Leap further and actually made specific statements about wishing he would be assassinated. That pushes it into a whole 'nother level. The kind where the SS would like a word with you.

Welcome to Obama's America, where it is illegal to have hopes and dreams and to wish for things to happen ;)

For those that are still confused as to why an off-duty cop would have corrective action taken upon them by their agency, cops generally take an oath to serve the pubic. This is just a suggested form of an oath from the International Association of Chiefs of Police:

On my honor,
I will never betray my badge,
my integrity, my character,
or the public trust.
I will always have
the courage to hold myself
and others accountable for our actions.
I will always uphold the constitution
my community and the agency I serve.

Those of you in the private sector, do you make such oaths as a requirement of your employment??

On August 4, 2000, when Bush won the Republican nomination (but before he was president), Craig Kilborn on CBS's The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn ran a graphic of the words "SNIPERS WANTED" under George Bush as he gave his acceptance speech. Although CBS belatedly apologized five days later, Kilborn was never investigated, questioned or punished, and continued to host the show for four more years.

Stupid joke. Probably can't fire her.

http://law2.umkc.edu/faculty/projects/ftrials/conlaw/publicemployees. h tm

TL;DR: you can't fire a government employee for off-duty speech not directly pertaining to job, as it would be the government curtailing general freedom of expression. Also, IANAL, but I can read and this is pretty plain.

Very specifically,

"In Rankin, on the other hand, a 5 to 4 majority concluded that the statement "If they go for him again, I hope they get him," made immediately following news of Hinckley's attempt to assassinate President Reagan, was speech on a matter of public concern. The Court ordered the deputy constable's reinstatement, noting that the remark--made only to a fellow employee--was not likely to affect either her ability to perform her largely clerical duties in the constable's office or public confidence in the office."

So the question is that once it's on Facebook, would it have interfered with ability to perform? My guess is it would not--if the government hadn't publicized it themselves.

The Secret Service follows up on stuff like this all the time and has done so since before there was an Internet. It's a total judgment call which threats they take seriously enough to do something about it besides a cursory investigation.

Hard to imagine the SS was spying on people's facebook pages before the internet existed...

Amazing but true, people actually used to communicate their feelings, emotions, favorite music, photos of their dog, and even make public threats against the President before Facebook. Hell, even "One Day at a Time" had an episode where Ann Romano made threats against President Carter without meaning it and two Secret Service agents paid her a visit.

Does the fact that under Obama, three times as many Americans have died in Afghanistan as under Bush mean anything? Or that unlike Obama, Bush never executed American citizens with drone strikes mean anything? Or that since demanding our withdrawal from Iraq, Obama has now opened the door for Iranian fly-overs to support Al Qaeda now operating in Syria? Or his support of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt during the Arab Spring, which has predictably led to Islamic extremism taking over the country (see today's headline), does that mean anything?

To the left - of course not. The strawman is not trying to say that it is somehow justified to demand Bush's assassination because he inspired more hatred, it is pretending that there is consistent outrage when all evidence proves otherwise.

You clearly haven't been paying attention.

Voicing disapproval != claiming it is only done by the right (and is done by everyone the right)

So I guess you're the type that'll yell "fire!" in a crowded theater amirite?

I would like to yell "fire" as you stand in front of a firing squad.

Just don't. Don't play tough on the internet.

Follow your own advice. Shhhhh.

Please point out where I've threatened people with death, sunshine.

Wow, the media has some hold on your mind. Go watch your TV.

Bullseyed: jodaveki: It'd be interesting to see if this kind of sentiment has been expressed as frequently during past presidencies. I just don't recall so much viceral hate toward such as Bush I or II, or Clinton. How about Carter? Or Nixon?

That's because you're a liberal. It was hard to find a single newspaper without op ed letters about how people hoped Bush died.

Bullshiat.

This is a transprent, and stupid, lie.

If there were so goddamned many of them that it's hard not to find one, give us a link to one.

Just one.

Or be exposed as the dishonest peice of crap you are.

Cythraul: Left-leaning cop? Is there such a thing?

Those cops that dumped out my weed or made me pour out my beer when I was a minor.

Maybe they weren't necessarily 'left-leaning', but they were definitely not mindless, sociopathic drones with badges.

/has also had too many encounters with mindless, sociopathic drones with badges

Bullseyed: Fluorescent Testicle: Bullseyed: My best find so far:

For all of these posts, you seem to be completely missing the fact that they're all idiots - both this cop and those protesters. It's not a black and white issue, it's not "Ok when we/you do it," and neither side is in the right here.

So why were none of those people questioned? Arrested? Put on leave from their jobs?

I posted a cool story bro of someone I know getting questioned for something much more innocuous than those protestors. But you go right ahead and keep 'Just asking questions'. As for getting put on leave, again, you've had that dick slapped up against you face so many times now I don't see why anyone should bother repeating that things actually are different for public servants than other job sectors.

Pay cops a lot more money (no, even more than that) and you might get integrity back into the field. As it is, those people with the qualities we'd like LEO's to have, are choosing better paying, safer jobs.

Conversely, a LEO with better education, superior morality, bravery and ethics will be more difficult to order into questionable tactics such as no-knock raids and peaceful protest disruption.

The more y'all get paid, the more Republican you'll be, and the more you'll be likely to want Obama dead.

Besides, Officers make a farkload of money already. Something like six times the median where I live. How much more do you want?

So if the median is say, $50,000 -you believe cops are making $300,000? That doesnt sound right.

Median in Oakland is about $30,000 and the average Officer makes about $188,000.

Given the city's current financial situation, where the POA allowed layoffs instead of negotiating on benefits, there aren't any open positions.

When there were, they weren't really open to the general public. Pretty much relatives and occasional lateral transfers from what I've heard.
