Just Another OC Homeless Guy: Zarquon's Flat Tire: That's a stupid thing for a public employee to post, but I don't know that it counts as a threat.

Actually, I don't think it does.

"Where's Lee Harvey Oswald or John Wilkes Booth when you need them??"

That statement nowhere implies any future action on the part of the person saying it.

It's equivalent to saying: "I wish somebody would kill the President."

Sorry, I don't see a threat there.

I don't think this person has done any sort of crime that needs involve the Secret Service, but they have surely done enough to warrent disciplinary action by their department. A police officer should know better than to express a political opinion in this manner.

Sure, both my in-laws, one was a school officer most of her career, the other started an older adult wellness check program for his department. Not every cop is a neo-fascist, just most =)

NightOwl2255: On the few occasions I have engaged one of these "wish Obama was dead" kinds, I have yet to hear anything that is even remotely reasonable for the hate. There's the "he's a Muslim" and "he wants to turn the U.S. over to the UN" and the ever popular "he wants to take away our guns". In every case I really believe the hate comes down to one simple fact, he's a ni*DING*er.

Just for you

Fibro: Ross said Social Service agents interviewed Coursey on Friday, following the posting she allegedly made about 10:10 p.m. Thursday, about 10 minutes into Obama's live speech at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte:
"Where's Lee Harvey Oswald or John Wilkes Booth when you need them!?!? :)", the posting stated, referring to the assassins of presidents John F. Kennedy and Abraham Lincoln.

What are social service agents?

Whoopsie! Sounds like someone just threatened to kill someone! Well, no, but it's at the same level as what this thread is about.

You're right. I meant an official, government sanctioned firing squad. There, now the murder is for the good of the state and the elected will of the people.

If you want to get all technical...I don't find wondering where two dead guys are threatening to anyone...He didn't follow up by saying, "I'll just take care of this myself".

Right, because no reasonable person would understand referencing two dead presidential assassins as anything else, right? No one who wasn't a toddler or autistic perhaps?

The Secret Service still takes it seriously and looks into it because it can be interpreted as inciting others to commit violent acts on the president. This is also why it's a class D felony. The concept isn't that hard to grasp, silly.

cubic_spleen: cc_rider: Fecking hell. Those same people called us "traitors and commies" simply for speaking out against the Iraq War, and wanting Bush/Cheney impeached (for damn good reason). They talk about "Second Amendment solutions" to a president they simply don't like, and call themselves "Patriots". :/

"Hatriot" is the term you are looking for. Generally means people who demonstrate their love of country by spouting off about how much they hate almost everyone in it. After all, according to the right-wingers, nothing is more patriotic than killing non-whites. Especially if they are also non-Christian.

Free speech is one thing, inviting an assassin to take out anyone, let alone the US head honcho, is another thing. Perhaps she should have just said "I disagree with the current president" and left it at that.

Yeah. I'm sure the dead guy who killed Lincoln is on facebook, retard.

Hell, she could have even went so far as to call him dirty names and insult his mother. But she took it a step...nay, an Incredible Hulk Leap further and actually made specific statements about wishing he would be assassinated. That pushes it into a whole 'nother level. It's simple, the whack jobs had easier access to sniper's nests and access through sleeping guards back in the day. Now you can't even even say "kill ________" without the Secret Service getting intel about it from a variety of agencies associated with Homeland Security currently monitoring the Internet.

Really though it's never a good idea to talk about killing someone generally, just shoot.

Its not like he said "I hope some one kills because I of " or said he was going to do it him self.
Who has not at some point in their lives wished harm or death on another person, even if they didn't mean it.
If this is a crime I know alot of people who need to be investigated from GWB's term and many more from BHO's term.

I don't have to be able to read minds. It's pretty damned obvious. What has Obama done, or said, that could realistically lead to so many people hating him so deeply? Sure, some parts of it are the result of Conservative Privilege Syndrome that crops up every time there's a D in the White House (look at the lunacy during the Clinton years), but there's a lot more poutrage with Obama.

Yes.

I live across the street from one of them.

He's the most laid back cop I've ever known.

There's one cop out here whom I don't know the politics of, but ran across my little sister back when she was three. She and her friend had decided they were going to go to the park together, about a mile away, and he got both of them home safely and somehow even dealt with my biological father, who tends to swear every other word. So I'd imagine not all cops are assholes.

No, but if you typed "I'd pay someone if they would give me a blow job right now!?!?! :)" Likely your significant other would not be amused upon reading it.

The Secret Service follows up on stuff like this all the time and has done so since before there was an Internet. It's a total judgment call which threats they take seriously enough to do something about it besides a cursory investigation.

yohohogreengiant: What was the straw that made you ex-police?

You nailed it when you talked about the militarization of the police. I came up in the tradition that a cop was first and foremost a public servant. We were supposed to protect the people from the bad guys. Then as police became more and more militarized, the people WERE the bad guys. It was bad before 9/11, it was untenable afterwards.

I am not saying cops in my day were always good guys, or always doing the right thing. What I am saying is that at least there was a paradigm that said the people were the important thing, not the system. I no longer believe that to be true.

Okay, I hear that. When you police with a military, the enemy does start to look like the people. I wish we did have a purely civilian police force, but that isn't the trend at this point.
