cubic_spleen: cc_rider: Fecking hell. Those same people called us "traitors and commies" simply for speaking out against the Iraq War, and wanting Bush/Cheney impeached (for damn good reason). They talk about "Second Amendment solutions" to a president they simply don't like, and call themselves "Patriots". :/

"Hatriot" is the term you are looking for. Generally means people who demonstrate their love of country by spouting off about how much they hate almost everyone in it. After all, according to the right-wingers, nothing is more patriotic than killing non-whites. Especially if they are also non-Christian.

Heh! I like that word! Gonna start using it.

It was the coffee table book of the same name ('Death of a President') that convinced me that E. Howard Hunt was incognito behind the Grassy Knoll, he was CIA, Bush Sr was CIA, Hunt was later used by Nixon to bug the Watergate... therefore Nixon and Bush Sr are implicated in JFK's death, therefore oh crap I'm morphing into Rusty Shackleford.

The film wasn't about killing Bush, it was about the consequences of an assassination - that is, what America becomes after such an event. Anybody who actually read about or watched the film would know this, but that's too much work for your brain cells isn't it?

No, having seen the film, the assassination is part of an elaborate left-wing fantasy that allows them to spew rhetoric about Cheney and the Patriot Act in the guise of entertainment. Meanwhile, Obama runs around the country spiking the football about OBL, conveniently ignoring that the intelligence that led to his courier, and eventually to OBL, was obtained by water boarding a member of Al Qaeda.

So, on 9/11 with the "they're all gonna kill us!! They're hiding under the water bottles!! CHECK THE SHOES!!" hysteria - there's a problem when someone publicly says that they wish the President were assassinated?

This is where the hysteria of things like the Patriot Act, along with the gradual dumbing of America (thanks, TV/Internet!) have taken us.

Until the upper half of the bell curve stops getting bullied, it'll just get worse.

Sargun: jodaveki: It'd be interesting to see if this kind of sentiment has been expressed as frequently during past presidencies. I just don't recall so much viceral hate toward such as Bush I or II, or Clinton. How about Carter? Or Nixon?

I know that JFK was hated a lot. Here's one poster that resembles a lot of the anti-Obama warrgarbl. Here are some excerpts from an article written by a Professor of Law at the University of Georgia:

During his presidency, right-wingers utterly detested President John F. Kennedy; and the extreme right-wingers hated Kennedy with a venomous, malignant ferocity bordering on insanity. Because he was a liberal and pro-civil rights, right-wingers-particularly, the segregationists and racists, the opponents of civil rights, the states-righters, the free enterprise loonies, the wealthy ultra-conservatives, the religious bigots, the anti-Castro Cubans, the U.N. haters, and the lunatic fringe anti-Communists-regarded JFK as dangerous, destructive, and downright traitorous.

As William Manchester notes in his classic The Death of a President (1967): "At 3:05 p.m., when 80 percent of the American People were in deep grief, an NBC camera panned toward a group of spectators outside Parkland's emergency entrance and picked up a young man with a placard that read, 'Yankee, Go Home.'" (In a wealthy Dallas suburb, Manchester reminds us, "pupils of a fourth-grade class, told that the President of the United States had been murdered in their city, burst into spontaneous applause.")

William Manchester's book, for example, discusses the "initial glee" with which right-wingers greeted news of the assassination. "An Oklahoma City physician beamed at a grief-stricken visitor and said, 'Good. I hope they got Jackie.'" In Amarillo, Texas, a woman reacted by saying: "Hey, great, JFK's croaked!" Men whooped and threw their hats in the air. Others smiled broadly. Soon, however, the right-wingers realized that their public gloating was a ghastly mistake, whereupon they began concealing their happiness. "[T]hey were anxious to avoid the undertow of public opinion," Manchester says.

Interesting. What I was looking for was some evidence (ephemeral as it may prove) that this kind of rabid odium has no connection to race. Of course there have always been those who have voiced disgust with the office-holder, but these past four years seem so over-the-top... In my periodic self-reflections I thought the fact that Obama's black might be the reason behind how pronounced the racial overtones seem-- kind of like telling someone to ignore the spot on a white blouse-- but in light of the savage glee at Kennedy's death, and his strong ties to the civil rights movement, I'm more convinced now than ever.

BraveNewCheneyWorld: On the average police make significantly more than the average american.

Hmm, maybe in some states I guess. I recently considered going to the academy (despite my age), so I have researched it thoroughly here. The starting pay in Florida is around $38k. Some cities more, some less. But well below median in the USA. The state average for a veteran beat cop, not a sergeant or detective, was in the 40's. About on par for the median income in the US of $44k.

If you say "leftie" as in civil rights and freedoms vs. "leftie" economically and internationally, might it paint a more complete picture? Police are people and aren't one dimensional any more than anyone else in our society.

With that said, I imagine as police forces become more militarized in recent years both in equipment, training - and perhaps mission - it may be harder to support "leftie" officers in either regard.

What was the straw that made you ex-police?

There was plenty of hate towards W, but Fox News and Rush have done a good job of convincing the feeble minded that Obama is the worst president of all time. Which is kind of a head-scratcher. You hate the guy that couldn't fix the mess worse than the guy who helped start it?

But not this kind, tho. I've tried working out reasons for the level of this kind of hate, trying to relate the economy, the wars, the bailouts, all of it to the ferocity, and the math just doesn't work for me. The only diff? This guy's black.

Nope, sorry. When you work for Law Enforcement, your employment agreement is not the same as if you were working for your local McDonald's. Free speech is one thing, inviting an assassin to take out anyone, let alone the US head honcho, is another thing. Perhaps she should have just said "I disagree with the current president" and left it at that.

Hell, she could have even went so far as to call him dirty names and insult his mother. But she took it a step...nay, an Incredible Hulk Leap further and actually made specific statements about wishing he would be assassinated. That pushes it into a whole 'nother level. The kind where the SS would like a word with you.

Ross said Social Service agents interviewed Coursey on Friday, following the posting she allegedly made about 10:10 p.m. Thursday, about 10 minutes into Obama's live speech at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte:
"Where's Lee Harvey Oswald or John Wilkes Booth when you need them!?!? :)", the posting stated, referring to the assassins of presidents John F. Kennedy and Abraham Lincoln.

What are social service agents?

Zarquon's Flat Tire: That's a stupid thing for a public employee to post, but I don't know that it counts as a threat.

Actually, I don't think it does.

"Where's Lee Harvey Oswald or John Wilkes Booth when you need them??"

That statement nowhere implies any future action on the part of the person saying it.

It's equivalent to saying: "I wish somebody would kill the President."

Sorry, I don't see a threat there.

2012-09-11 12:22:59 PM
A couple of things...

1) This is her own police department that took action after a local complaint about the facebook posting. The only reason the secret service is involved is because they were notified by her department.

2) I don't think she's gonna run afoul of the feds, because she skirts a call to action. Her posting was obviously tasteless humor and misplaced frustration.

3) That doesn't mean she won't be fired. She can have all the freedom of speech she wants, but her job - government or not - probably has in her contract that she has to uphold the image, and they can deem this a violation of the contract. Likely, she'll be disciplined and be on paid leave for a bit, since this is a first time offense.

4) Her facebook support page are right, even though they're idiots for supporting her. She has her freedom of speech. They just don't understand the points above. They are likening this to the feds silencing dissent, etc. etc. Likely, they hate Obama, and any way to dig at him, including supporting someone who talks like a fool, they'll put their name to.

5) Without knowing her background or what she said, her pictures show her to be hot. Her comments and obvious mental level, though, lower her on the hotness scale. I can't separate inner and outer beauty.

There was a bunch of this sort of stuff with Bush, too. Some similar Secret Service checkup inspired a libertarian (like a real one, not a Fark Independent TM) friend of mine to set up a website that was just pictures of Bush and guns. Not even in the same photo, or pointed ominously, or anything, just Bush and guns. Sure enough, he earned himself a visit at work. According to him they were pretty matter of fact about it, "Oh yeah, didn't figure it was anything but it's our job to check up on anything and everything," and he was mostly okay with it...until the end when they said, "So you're going to take the site down now, right?" at which point he went all Libertarian free speech whargarble about it. And since he had the opportunity to tell the tale later, I can only assume their response was an eye-roll and putting a checkmark next to 'crackpot'.

Anyway, my point is people getting their panties in a bunch to defend a derper are just as stupid now as then. I overall admire said friend, but..yeah. Till someone's right to free speech is actually infringed, not just receives a sternly raised eyebrow, rushing out to defend it is kinda stupid.
