Eh.. Go to any beach near the popular fishing spots and most of the stores in the area will have live bait vending machines sitting outside.. Same difference except China put crab in it.

It's actually in China, not Japan. The vending machines in both the article and your video are located in a subway station. It's possibly even the same vending machine.

as long as their gill vanes are damp, they are fine. and considering they are cold blooded water insects being kept in a refigerator, they are quite dorment.

put the container in your pocket, it might get interesting though,

yes, I agree it sucks. and if i ever found my self in a position to purchase a crab from a vending machine, I would probably warm it up back to viability and toss it into the closest body of salt or brackish water

or I might just stop look at the device and say... " well... that's a thing... yep.. sure is!" and go about my way.

for, I grew up near the coast, and hand crabbing was a frequent activity for the me and the family, and I can attest that crabs, are assholes.

and besides, its a Asian crab, not a Chesapeake bay blue crab. which is bay far the more superior eating crab.

these crabs are the tiny little guys that usually end up in cans of flake crab meat. with a lilt flavor and muddy texture.

No, but "buying crabs" is not what they're doing. They're torturing hairy crabs. The crabs are alive, trapped in a container that's open to the air and rendered pretty much immobile. They're chilled, to slow their metabolism, so what you have is a drugged, immobile hairy crab, dragged from its normal aquatic environment and crammed into a vending machine. The worst part?

There's no way to clearly identify where the crabs came from - hairy crabs are notorious filter feeders, and they have a reputation for living in places that would kill other aquatic life. If the crabs are caught in polluted waters, well, enjoy the toxins & heavy metals.

I love seafood. I'm just not keen on buying dubious seafood from a vending machine.
