BKITU: degenerate-afro: That's how bad that game was, after three botched punts and excellent field position the entire game, the Chargers where still in a position to lose. Yet Berman had the nerve to say "Norv Turner is the best in the NFL at tricks" or something stupid along those lines.

Is there something in the rules that would have prevented Scifres from simply taking the snap and running backwards for 3 seconds, then falling down or out of bounds? That seemed like a much more sensible play than actually kicking it away.

There's no rule against it. Hell, he could sprint back into his own end zone and give up a safety, those points wouldn't matter.

But instead they punted and the Raiders should have gotten one last play but lulzscabrefs.

/Has imaginary scenarios where Palmer throws it to McFadden and he runs 90 yards to firework explosions to tie the game with a 2pt conversion and an overtime victory.

Whack-a-Mole: "Not news: Redskins long snapper breaks arm. News: stays in the game. Fark: two more quarters, and snaps the ball nine more times. Ultrafark: developed pain tolerance by repeatedly tasering himself as a kid"

The funny thing is if the Redskins' long snapper got whacked in the head, he'd been forced out of the game by rule (just like the long snapper here in question; concussions are srs bzn now in the NFL).

Too be fair, McFadden and Reece (and Myers) were the only ones who were CATCHING the damn balls.

So many dropped passes by the rookies (DHB had one bad one too).

I do love how Rivers/Turner are being hailed as some sort of offensive geniuses when they were 1-5 in the red zone, and Rivers is defended with "gates wasn't feeling 100% and one of their WRs were missing", while blasting palmer with only "sure, Ford and Moore were out and one of the replacement wide receivers has been on the team not even a full week, but Palmer's still ass even though he put nearly exactly the same numbers as Rivers".

Fair enough with regards to the drops, but that is still an insane number of dumpoffs. At least he didn't force it to a receiver and get picked off this game, so the Raiders have that going for them.... I have no fair in a Greg Knapp offense to be productive, and this team is absolutely farked with salary cap problems while being saddled with Carson Palmer. I don't think this team will be anywhere near good for at least five years. Just too many problems left over from Al (and Hue's ridiculous acquisition of Palmer).

I needed one more farking point out of Janikowski in the 2nd half to win my fantasy matchup.

It seemed like the middle of the field, 10-20 yards out, was open all game for Palmer to throw to. Except he didn't. Now, he did get crushed by the pass rush a few times, and dump offs are good to fight that. But air it out, just a little. It's there.

/Blaming the playcalling more than Palmer.
//Blaming Wes Welker's 1.4 points more than the Raiders.

I kinda disagree there. We were 1 game from division champs last year, so while the Superbowl is proably out of the question, getting to the playoffs isn't.

I recognize that they were damn close, but Hue was an excellent offensive coach. Knapp is not. And we lost Michael Bush and lost several productive (and overpaid) starters. And we didn't have crap for draft picks, making talent pickups raw or scarce.

Even though the most repeated line other than "norv turner is awesome" last night was "the raiders are the old raiders", I really don't think that's true. The penalties were costly, but in terms of numbers, wasn't that bad compared to the usual. The offense began good but kinda petered out in the 3rd/4th quarters when the chargers just focused on eliminating mcfadden from being able to do anything. I think with at least Moore back it'll open up the field a bit more.

Well, Norv is Norv and could turn Tom Brady into Marsha Brady. I certainly hope I'm wrong and will keep watching, but I don't have high expectations. The offensive talent just seems to get injured too often.

The one thing I really liked about Hue was that it wouldn't have been a question to go for it on the 4th and inches right before the half. That man was ballsy with the fake punts/fgs too.

And ya, we have a bunch of Mr. Glasses on our team.

I contemplated the safety, but thought that the Chargers might still have to give the free kick afterward, even with no time remaining.

*checks NFL rulebook online*

4-8-2-h: "If a safety results from a foul during the last play of a half, the score counts. A safety kick is made if requested by the receivers."

So it looks like a safety would have been OK -- it's not a foul to run out of the endzone. However, I don't know if I would have trusted scabrefs to make that determination real-time. And running for 3 seconds and falling down or going OB still would have been the safer move.

As a Chargers fan who remembers the first 6 weeks of the 2009 season all too well, I have no pity for the Raiders' special teams problems.

I think you're exaggerating the difference in assessment a little bit. Carson made a few bad throws, and Rivers made at least two red-zone throws that weren't too great either. Gates should have come down with one of them though. McFadden in general was pretty good, but had at least 3 drops. Raiders D usually didn't look too bad, though Chargers O-line held up better in pass protection than I expected, and Rivers kept relatively calm when things got tight. Raiders self-destructed. Tommy Kelly and special teams.

You'd think the Raiders would at least make sure that the guy who made the roster because he is the backup long snapper could actually, you know, long snap.

davidphogan: jimpoz: "I would rather play with a broken arm than let the substitute long snapper with two good arms play."

Most teams don't carry a backup long snapper.

I just wanted to brag.
