While I don't mind that these 'environmental' impacts are considered during these types of project, it does draw very bright contrast of why infrastructure projects are not like they used to be. There are no shovel ready projects because of this. In addition, you need to safeguard against the NIMBYs that will use any and all means (especially the environmental movement) to ensure that they are able to push their BANANA agenda through.

You realize that there is a difference between paving over the rainforest to build the world's biggest Wal Mart and finding one freaking spider that everybody already thought was extinct and probably will be soon no matter what we do, right? I'm all for maintaining as much biodiversity as possible (I would concentrate on the oceans right now personally - we seem to be doing a pretty good job of farking them up immensely), but crap like this can be counter-productive. It's cases like this where a single spider halts a multi-million dollar infrastructure project that will benefit millions of people that are used to help dismantle environmental regulation. I don't understand why we can't ever just use a little common sense and/or moderation in this country. We have to do everything all-or-none, and more often than not end up going full-retard in the process.

I keep reading stories about various critters that were previously thought useless, only then someone studies them and finds out their venom treats a disease or ___________ - fill in your own awesome scientific discovery. In fact a while ago National Geographic did a big feature on heirloom breeds of livestock and vegetables, and one of the things that sticks in my memory is that the different breeds of chickens can be resistant to certain types of diseases, or some do much better in hot, dry climates, etc.

Just because we don't know if it's a beneficial species doesn't mean we should obliterate them. What if the cure for cancer really DOES reside in those Amazonian ants from the movie Medicine Man? Eh? Eh??
