"I'm not an extremist, but I must ensure that my children abstain from certain activities that may include lessons which promote views contrary to our faith," said Tourloukis, who is supported by a group called the Parental Rights in Education Defense Fund. "We know other denominations like Jehovah's Witnesses and Muslims are excused for certain activities. Does our being Christian disqualify us from equitable treatment?"

"It's just that my personal faith is so weak that I don't feel anybody who isn't properly indoctrinated will still want to be a member of my religion after hearing any kind of alternate perspectives"

"Muslim parents are very serious about their children, and a majority of them want to live a pious life," noted Seerah founder Jawed Anwar, who said he believes at least 100 parents have given the letter to schools. "Bill 13 is a punch in their face."

Fine.Send your little snowflake to a private school then.

Isn't Christianity based on wizardry? I mean, water into wine, unlimited fish from nothing, making blind people see by touch, possession, angels and instant magic transportation anywhere, burning swords, and so on. It's wrong when Harry Potter does it but not Jesus?

Good. Now the rest of the kids can actually learn something without the incessant whining and interference of ignorant, backwards parents like yourselves

I have met enough people who actually think you are learning wizardry from a sneaky or unknowing devil worshiper. Anyone who says, they don't believe in it or do it, is either lying or trying to hide the truth from them. They also think each others group is also party to this wizardry devil worship.

They see more danger around the corner than a level 5 sky caster at night. That is seriously paranoid.

These parents are Canadian.

Yes.

However, anything is better than oligarchy, man, no?

Any ideology that can't stand up to any academic scrutiny or questioning is a really, really bad ideology.

Hobodeluxe: want to mix religion and education? go to a private school.

I am Jewish, but when I was a kid, the local private school was fun by Catholics. My parents let me go to Catholic School, but they didn't require me to go to religious stuff. For all the criticism we give the Catholic church(and well earned), they are confident in their faith and modernity. I go a good education, and was not proselytized.

Of course it is, god gave us the Earth to use and abuse just like he gave Adam, Eve.

Anyone parent who sends a letter should have their children removed from their custody. Child abuse is not only physical.

Dear concerned parent,

Our school prides itself on teaching both factual knowledge and life skills as part of its continuing curriculum. In honoring your faith, we suggest you withdraw your child the day before classes begin. Thank you.

PS: Any student missing more than 10 consecutive days of school in a term w/o a physicians note will receive an 'F' in all subjects.

Um, since when did Christians start believing wizards are real? It's been a long time, but I don't ever remember hearing that.

Because wizards aren't real. Because magic isn't real. That's a very easy thing to demonstrate. Or actually not demonstrate.

They sound concerned. Maybe they should send them to their respective denominations private religious schools to get the full indoctrination effect. It's the only way to be sure.

If I were a teacher I'd stack sex ed, sexual orientations, evolution, and wizardy all in a row over the course of a couple weeks or three and then make about three quarters of the final over all that subject matter.

I hear ya. That is certainly not in opposition to biblical principles,at least. The Book of Genesis contains several passages that deal with humanity's stewardship of the earth. If that isn't a call to conservation,I don't know what is.

2012-09-10 11:08:27 PM
The marquee at a nearby Lutheran church reads "sacrifice intellect when contradictory to the word if god."

I weep for this world.

Why the fark do people have a problem with this? These people aren't even being intolerant, and require that nobody should be taught this stuff.

I don't understand Liberals sometimes, which is odd, since I'm one myself.

this is such bullshiat! curriculum outcomes are available online. This "crusade" should go no further than those documents. Outcomes are what teachers teach. Period. These people are crazy if they think that teachers should be expected to what -- run their lesson plans by them for prior approval or vetting? Give me a break!

The Dept. of Education/School Districts/School Boards/School administrators should provide these arseholes with a URL to the outcomes and tell them to STFU and GBTW.

You didn't check the internet once during the ten year period when the  Harry Potter series was being published, did you?

megalynn44: Environmentalism is contradictory to faith? Srsly?

Yes and no apparantly.

"We do agree with many of the goals of conservation, however these principles are often presented from a humanistic world view (for the benefit of man) or a naturalistic world view (deifying the earth) which is in conflict with our teachings," notes the letter. "Conservation would be more successful for our children if connected to their understanding of being respectful of their Creator's creation."

Its not just "we dont like what youre teaching", its now also "we dont like how youre teaching the stuff we cant exempt our kids from" too.

Is math class supposed to talk about how numbers were given to man by god as a means of... uh... fark, i dont even know, i cant even poe that level of derp.

If given the choice I'd prefer this to the fundies trying to ban the teaching of evolution to everybody's kids. I may not agree with this guy's views, but he isn't trying to shove them down my throat (just down his kid's throat, but that's going to happen regardless.)

Maybe it was just the teacher showing the kids his wizard's sleeve?

To these people teaching wizardry is when an English teacher assigns a fictional book were one of the characters is a wizard to read. Trust me, this is what they mean by teaching wizardry, I have first hand knowledge of this.

This wizardry scourge began with the most evil wizard of all - The Wizard of Oz who has been corrupting our children for decades, encouraging them to take poppies, poppies, poppies, and live in a magical world of wonder. And you were there. And you were there. And you were there, too.
