Wittenberg Dropout: I like this since the last place I used to get my haircut turned into Fantastic Sam's. I loved the place even though the chicks there could only do that "hispanic guy" haircut [read: high fade]. The scalp massages they gave bordered on lap dances.

Then the stroller brigade showed up and it was time to go.

I hope Wal-Mart emulates this trend.

So, at this point, what men's jeans are still made in America? Levi's and Lee both outsource now (and Levi's quality has been in the crapper ever since).

Difficulty: Durable. A pair of Levi's used to last a decade. Now the freaking belt loops fall apart inside of a year. And I don't wear a belt!

Just keep your eyes open. All of the JC Penney stores are being outfitted with iPads as a way for customers to peruse the inventory and place orders. Because everyone wants to go to the store, grab an internet appliance and place their order online, in the store.

Also, I suspect that Apple is probably giving him a nice little incentive check for every unit sold.

I manage a retail store now, part of a 400 store chain. Not a clothing store thank god, but we do sell soft goods.

There are folks - mostly in the distribution side - that believe this is the future of retail. Jane Q Customer goes to a small storefront or kiosk, checks out the samples maybe tries on an outfit for size , then uses an on site computer or her smartphone to place an order to be shipped to her home.

There was an article in USA Today about it a few weeks ago. Personally, I think that's bullshiat. If you're going to a store why put up with having to order it? You can do that from home already.

They're going to lose a metric ass load of money at the mall of NH with all the border crossers (Latino) from Mass. getting free haircuts. My ex wife suggested it when they had the same program last month, and I took her to my hair salon for $12 and she got a fine trim.

Dahnkster: I am definitely 'ok' with this. Families on a budget. Haircut incentives on a traditionally slow mall shopping day. They've gone back to sales and clearance, my wife bought some unbelievable clearance summer dresses with a group of girlfriends down visiting from New York a couple weeks ago (a few were lined for $10-$25). She got nothing but compliments every time she wore one. They lost 147 million dollars second quarter and stocks fell 18%. I read the comments FTFA and if 'pissing and moaning' were an Olympic Sport, we'd be the Jessie 'Motherfarkin' Owens to the rest of the world.

They finally went back to sales? Did they get rid of Mr Target as CEO finally? Can't belive the board hasn't booted him out yet.

And honestly, "made in USA" doesn't mean squat these days. It can mean places like the Mariana Islands, where many federal labor and safety laws aren't applicable. Because nothing says national pride like a bunch of east Asian women working in sweatshops while earning $5.50/hr.

Until they start showing some metrics such as yarn/thread gauge, break force, color fastness, etc... I'd rather go into the store and feel the quality of the textile. It is rather hard to see if something is crap or not from a low resolution photo.

you can try it on at the store. You can continue to go shopping with no baggage to carry around and leave in the car some someone can break in to your car when you pull in to a restaurant after shopping.
Plus, nobody notices you come home with two bags of clothes, so nobody biatches at you.

Seems like registers pretty often go un-staffed in a variety of department stores... maybe the employees are just crowding around the security cameras?

Nothing will push me out of a store faster than employees asking me if I need help -- especially if it happens more than once. I think employees should be visible and accessible if someone requires assistance, but if I am browsing, let me do it in peace. If I have any questions, I will ask.

The worst offender of late was Radio Shak. We were looking at phones (what the hell is it with all the Droid phones being huge? They're closer to iPads than phones... but I digress) and the sales lady came and asked if we needed help. We said "no thanks, just looking" and that turned into 50 questions. "What carrier do you use? What sort of phone do you have now? What features are you interested in? Have you seen this?" Even though we said "just looking", the questions kept coming, so we left.

I don't know. I am sure there are people who want to be greeted and assisted constantly when they're shopping, I'm just not one of them.

I agree, it's pretty obnoxious. Studies were done in the 90s that demonstrated that more direct approaches to retail customer service (asking you what you need, taking you around the store, talking to you about products) translated to much higher sales. Basically, they found that being a pain in the ass encouraged (bullied) people into buying more. Browsing customers purchased less on average, so many places moved to the new model. This effect was enhanced in stores where employees make individual commission. Fun, huh?

It just might work. People with kids will be waiting for haircuts, and the rest of the store will have less kids running around unsupervised. It's better for other shoppers.
