I can't believe they didn't mention the 4th timeout that Seattle was granted in their game against Arizona. That was probably the most obvious mess up yesterday.

I was actually surprised with the refs for the Texans/Dolphins game. Very few missed/shiatty calls in that. Probably the best officiating out of all the games played.

There's bad calls for play on the field that any ref could make but then theres the bad calls a non-ref wouldn't make, yesterday was full of the latter.

I don't understand how the NFL, the most profitable sports group, who have a VERY VESTED interest in keeping their players as healthy has possible based on the amount of cash invested in them, seems so darn stingy on refs.

Yeah, that was by far the most glaring one. Perhaps the writer simply doesn't care about either team.

Gratified to see the Saints/Redskins game on there, although really the reffing wasn't at all terrible. I do wish that the author had tossed in that Brees was once sacked by his facemask and no flag was thrown; of course, the real refs miss facemasks fairly often, too, so perhaps it's not worth pointing out.

I'm thinking the fact that it had little impact on the game may have something to do with it. Had the timeout been burned properly by the Baldwin injury, Carroll would not have called a run play there and even if he did, there was still plenty of time to stop the clock or run another play. That said...yeah it looked terrible and then it got worse when they created a rule to fit what happened.

In regards to the facemask penalties, I saw big Ben getting sacked by his facemask last night, from a sideline cam, on the far side of the field. No call. These refs suck. Sure they looked OK in the preseason but like the NFLPA warned, the speed of the regular season is too much for these guys.

Besides, who watches preseason games. Closely.

Despite management-friendly scribes swearing to the contrary, the NFL's replacement officials made some enormous errors yesterday-some of which affected the outcome of games and at least one that directly led to a starting quarterback being knocked out of the game. That's not to mention losing track of time outs, which we covered last night. In general, most of the mistakes were of the purely-boneheaded (calling blocks in the back on punt teams, for example) variety, and there were far more than we could illustrate here. We'll try to do this every week, with your help; if you see a replacement referee blunder, tweet at us or use the #scabwatch hashtag.

i have no problem with this guy pointing out referee mistakes but the "scabwatch" and "if you see a replacement referee blunder", just reeks of an agenda.

yeah. we get it. they're using backups. by definition, not the elite, cream of the crop, paid folks that usually do the job. mistakes will happen.

So, when the regular referees return circa Week 5 (some speculation the pain of missing $5,500 game checks is already eroding solidarity), I hope you have the stones to run the same kind of "OMG LOOK AT YESTERDAY'S 20 WORST REGULAR NFL REFEREE COLUMN", Mr. Burke. because Ed "inadvertent whistle" Hochuli or any number of other NFL referees (hasselbeck in the super bowl, botched coin flip, the Lions player that almost decapitated the Vikes QB last year, Giants' Victor Cruz non-fumble fumble, ad motherfarking infiniturm) never make mistakes. right?

Legitimate Roethlisberger not getting the call may been for other reasons. When Ngata punched him in the face and broke his nose, no flag was thrown.

I did not want the Hawks to win that way. They did not deserve to win that game especially after the no timeout/timeout. Terrible calls against both teams. I can't believe I'm missing the normal refs. It's a ton of little things, game management etc...

Apparently that is the third time in nine seasons that has happened.

It never excuseable though, regular or replacement refs. The rule is pretty clear.

I'd say the most egregious faults are the ones that have nothing to do with penalizing a team. As in, Seattle's phantom 4th timeout, along with 24+5 = 30, failing to stop the clock, etc. These are mundane but terribly important things to get right, since there's no real way to undo the damage caused by that mistake. Rulings on the field can change one way or another, but if you fail to blow the whistle at the right time, everyone's shiat outta luck

Dude, I missed that one until it was replayed in slow motion. Even then I don't know if it was as bad of a missed call as the ones we saw yesterday.

in defense of the Patriot/Titan game; The pass interference in the end zone wasn't pass interference. There is contact on almost every play. McCourty may have touched him on the back to keep track of him, but didn't spin him or turn him in a way that would constitute interference.

Secondly, the fumble was a fumble. Dude caught ball, no bobbling, came down, lowered his shoulder and made contact with the DB... THEN, Mayo I believe, came in and knocked him out. It was a KO, UFC style. Ball came loose before he hit the ground. WHEN HE LOWERED HIS SHOULDER AND MADE CONTACT, it completed the catch.

So yeah, the refs make some mistakes, but I was starting to think the official officials were taking bets on the games the way they would push a team like a face in a pro wrestling match.

Amen. You could run this "story" every week. In the games I watched, I thought the refs did fine-what the NFL should be concerned with is all the sarcasm being used by the announcers that they don't use when the regular refs are out there.

Sure the professional refs make mistakes, everyone does. But the number of impact mistakes and the effect they had on games yesterday would probably equal a seasons worth of boo boos the regular refs would have made.

In the NFL a only one rookie official is allowed to work with a staff of seasoned zebras. What we had yesterday was a whole staff of rookies and the results showed. Some staffs did better than others but in the three games I saw (bears-colts, packers 49ers, seahawks, cardinals, steelers-broncos) the mistakes were numerous and terrible.

Packers/Niners game had a ton of bad calls on both sides.

1. The ones mentioned in this article
2. Rodgers getting facemask sacked. Unless now dragging a guy down by his facemask isn't a facemasking, that was so obvious a blind man could've seen it
3. The missed illegal block in the back on the punt return TD. No explanation needed
4. Quite a few missed holding/PI calls against the Niners. It seemed every other pass, the Niners defense was dry humping the Packer receivers

That said, Niners deserved the win.

In the universe where teams that believe their teams are better than others and should have won that game so they need someone to blame, they call the redskins/saints PI in the end zone "phantom" yet he was grabbing his arms down before the ball ever got there, you cant do that or you arent allowed to do that yet the NFL officials let that call go every time.
