So this is what you basement dwellers care about?

2012-09-10 06:28:26 PM
The problem with the first picture is that the proportions just look bizarre, not the T&A thing. Like her chest and ass have a second function as an airbag.

2012-09-10 06:28:46 PM
I was comparing asses; I don't know what the fark you other people were talking about. I like the one on the left.

lostcat: I looked at the before and after images, not realizing that's what they were.

I guess the world of comics is too subtle for a non-comic person to GAF.

There's some subtle changes to the spine curvature and the positioning of her legs. Also she's showing less cleavage, which is unfortunate.

It won't satisfy their critics, but nothing really will. Might sell some extra issues, though.

/the best part is that the most vocal people in the webcomics world whose remarks and memes about this cover circulated the most have art skills and a practical grasp of how human anatomy in translates to comic art that is, at best, rudimentary

ConConHead: Oh my god. A fictional character actually taking a real-world pose? Gasp!

You're kidding, right? It's still the same ridiculous pose as before, but from a slightly different angle.

/if it wasn't for the oversized ass in the first one (and the thong, WTF?) I would have said it was a matter of perspective warping.

Oldiron_79: Anne Hathaway

I gotta say that Anne Hathaway's Catwoman is now my favorite non-animated depiction. They got so much of her correct in that movie.

2012-09-10 06:30:51 PM
I prefer the original. The butt is too big for the perspective that she is coming in at, but I like big butts. Zippers are for regulating body temperature, and she was obviously getting warm from jumping around, so I have no issues with that.

The R. Crumb parody the artist did of his own work was awesome, but it needed a skinny batman getting a piggyback ride.

2012-09-10 06:32:04 PM
The costume on the left looks like her arsecheeks are being spread open from her own costume. That must be uncomfortable as hell. The new one is moderately much better despite the typical "Boobies and butt must be both showing to the reader" gig some comic artists do.

There's a modest link underneath. HaV is great, for sure. Her book is totally worth actually buying.

Only if she paid a letterer. For a comic so dependent upon written words for humor, the persistent unconcern with legibility makes HaV a must-miss, as far as I'm concerned. It's like she's got some weird passive-aggressive anger issues she wants to take out on her readers: "I have written greatness, and you'll go blind trying to read it!"

Next thing you know they'll start doing this in porno.

what farking decade do you live in? Women/Girls now make up almost half of Fandom in general... close to 65-70% in Anime/Manga. This is a mainstream comic, not a porno, and frankly the medium and the fans deserve better.

You're both wrong. I would say closer to 20%, 30% if I am feeling generous.

I love her history and literature strips. When she wanders off into her social justice wankery she loses me, but, then again, I suppose I am probably not the intended audience segment for those.

How old are you? Because I can very definitively say (from my own experiences at anime cons and from those of my friends and acquaintances who actually work in that industry) is that the fandom is at least 50/50 these days.

Now, there's a ton more vocal male otaku out there, and the fujis are much less vocal outside of their particular fandom sites, but in terms of actual fans who show up? At *least* 50/50, and producing yaoi-centric merch? Gold mine.

Meanwhile, yuri barely moves

You've noticed that, too? I mean, all the elements are there that it should be totally awesome (to a particular demographic I will deny being part of in any court of law ;) ), but what little I've seen of it is a total snooze-fest.

It's just not appealing to an American audience (which isn't unusual, what is popular with the original Japanese audience is in no way indicative of what will "hit" with a Japanese audience) for whatever reason.

Then again, yaoi *tends* not to be popular with female anime fans once they're in their 20s and actually have had a real relationship or two with a man (or woman), assuming they don't leave the fandom altogether.

For a while there Cons were running "Real Gay Sex vs Yaoi Gay Sex" late-hour panels, which amused me.

1. Almost every nerd chick I know approves of at least the concept of yaoi. A good Farkette friend of mine even claims that she's the direct inspiration for the Penny Arcade comic about it.

2. Also, almost every nerd chick I know is at least kind of bent. As in "not straight." That may be endemic to women of a certain age, but nerd girls, besides being down with gentle boy-boy loving, all seem to appreciate a good pair of boobies and some tribadism.

3. Nerds in general are pretty tolerant of "otherness." Which is really one of the coolest things about nerds in general. I think there's something about the mindset that encourages a wider range of sexual interests.

3a. Not that I've ever had any of that work in my favor...

One yuri series that I liked was Tetragrammaton Labyrinth. It wasn't overtly sexual, but with plenty of tension, great art and action. I just wish it had been longer than 6 books.

DC bailed on a perfectly fine cover. Granted, the new cover is just as good, but it's the principle of it all.

I love how the Hark a Vagrant gal, Kate Beaton, can draw comics with nudity and blatant sexual acts.

But a cover with Catwoman's costume a bit unzipped and she goes "OMG SEXISM EXPLOITATION!!"

Let's be honest here for a second: Hawkeye's pose in the original is pretty much a LOOK AT MY JUNK shot. Besides, they don't need to show Cap'n ass in the promo art. They had the entire film for that.

Would you say that person is 90% legs because thats all you can see? no, but the author of this article would. Honestly the redone image isnt any better.. Catwoman's just rotated a few degrees.

Foreshortening in no way explains why a body part in the background is the dominating feature. I don't want to imagine how big that ass would have to be for that picture to make sense.
