Hi, fellow Farkers!

About a year ago, I released on an unsuspecting world my stop motion tribute to the classic Jonny Quest cartoon. You might remember it from this Fark thread:

http://www.fark.com/comments/6535987/Amazing-stop-motion-animation-of - Jonny-Quest-opening-credits

You can see the finished title clip as well as a link for behind-the-scenes look at the making here:

http://www.jonnyquest.tv

Anyway, due to popular demand, I am now in the midst of a KickStarter campaign to animate an entire episode using the same technique. If you're interested, take a look!

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1913243956/jonny-quest-episode-in - stop-motion-animation

This is going to be a huge, fun project and will fulfill a long time dream to see the entire show animated dimensionally. Whether you can contribute or not, please help spread the word! Thanks for looking!

Looks cool, but have you cleared it with Hanna Barbera Studios and Williams Street?

2012-09-10 02:51:13 PM
Damn.
Williams Street lost the rights to the Hanna-Barbera stuff, that's why Harvey Birdman and Sealab went away. But I'm sure there will be no issue getting permission, and I hope this will lead to bigger and better things for you.
Good luck.

Like my opening titles, this is a fan-made project, ala all the "Star Wars" fan films you see by the hundreds on the internet. This is just for the pleasure of seeing the episode in stop motion. If HB or Warner is interested in pursuing this in stop motion after they see it, that would be fine by me but I'm not expecting anything from this other than the fun of doing it.

Roger, this was my favorite show when I was a little kid (along with Ultraman, which was awesome because Tokyo got stomped to dust by giant monsters in about every episode). I recently grabbed some JQ dvds and found yes, they're still awesome - handed them over to some friends with little boys and they loved them too.

So hell yeah I think there's a market for Johnny Quest to be brought to a new audience and this is a cool way to do that.

I'll stick with the Venture Bros., thx.

Not yet. It will be a choice between Robot Spy and two others. Robot Spy is such a fan favorite that it has to be in the running.

EnviroDude: Outside of Kickstarter, how can we get you payment? Paypal?

I'm not taking any PayPal payments but thanks. The way KickStarter works is that your card isn't charged unless we make our funding goal at the end of 30 days. If you send me PayPal, that does an end-run around KickStarter's rules and also means I have to track incoming payments and issue refunds if we don't make the funding goal. The problem with that is PayPal takes a cut regardless of whether you're giving me money or I'm refunding you. So if we end up not making our goal through KickStarter and I have to refund PayPal payments, I could potentially lose money just from PayPal fees. But if you pledge through KickStarter, no money exchanged hands unless we meet our funding goal.

Sorry Roger. But since you are accepting money in the form of a kickstarter it isn't classified the same as other fan works. All of those were funded by the participants themselves. If you don't get this pre approved then the moment it hits the net you will get a cease and desist at the very least.

I'm in. Who needs CGI? That was awesome! Robot Spy, thumbs up, but the invisible monster gave the young pedalphile nightmares, it also has my vote. Hell, almost any episode has my vote as long as it isn't from the 90's reboot. 60's episodes only!

Jonny Quest seems like a very sexist, racist, Christianist, anti-atheist and able-ist, show. Shouldn't we just be glad it's dead rather than re-introducing these poisonous tropes?

A couple of suggestions: make Jonny gay or emo with maybe a weight problem? Consider making Race Bannon a woman and prominent atheist? Introduce conflicts between Dr. Quest, a white man, and his not understanding Jonny and Hadji's relationship? Also, Hadji is a Swahili name but Hadji doesn't look African. I would suggest making Hadji more Iraqi which would enable a conversation of how we in the United States, people of privilege, constantly demeaned Iraqi's freedom fighters as hadji.

And Bandit should be a pit bull, one of the more oppressed animals in today's culture, and really he should not be imagined as a pet, but more of consensual companion to the main characters. I shouldn't have to add that Bandit is conveyed as a male dog demonstrating once more the sexist nature of this vile peace of 60s propaganda.

This might help (LGT WB release form. I have no idea how cool they've been about Hanna Barbera material, but if they follow the George Lucas model, he's cool as long as he isn't selling merchandise/DVDs/etc. or shiatting up the brand. The "fee" is what would concern me.

Having said that, some of Rog's other handiwork is well known to me, I've used his 8mm equipment for about ten years now in my video shop. Based on my experiences with his equipement and service, he doesn't half ass quality for easy bucks. Nice dude to talk with and he truly loves the craft.

Good luck, Rog, the preview is awesome!
