Given that Obama was the recipient of a Nobel Peace Prize I would say they sound about the same. You know, in the "War is Peace" kind of way.

You don't have to go back as far as Kissinger and Arafat. Obama won the Nobel not very long ago, and he certainly hasn't been a strong advocate for peace (it's likely that no US president has much choice in the matter, really - superpowers have their own momentum that no single person can stop even if they desired it).

I'd call them both political nonsense deserving nothing but derision at this point.

I'm sorry, but i'm not sure who would be a better candidate to be nominated for the peace prize based on his charity work alone. His wife maybe?

And the Nobel Peace Prize is a joke. And I feel compelled to point out that it's the Norwegian's fault, not the Swedes

Chinese Peace Prize? Already got one. Bought it at SprawlMart. Paint wore off pretty quick but, it came with a 5.00 off egg rolls coupon.

I dunno, given how many stolen copies of windows are floating around China, I'm thinking it was the least they could do for the guy.

I was rather PO'd about that, he was president for only a few months when he got nominated. What's more he was president of a country fighting two wars when he got nominated, it seemed like political BS

Nobel's also been consistent in awarding peace prizes to people responsible for various violent things.

2012-09-10 08:20:44 AM
This prize was founded when the Nobel Prize was given to Liu Xiaobo, much to the anger of the Chinese Authorities. They offered the first such prize to a Taiwanese politician viewed to be a bridge builder between China and Taiwan, but he refused to take part calling it a joke, and the prize was offered to a little girl representing peace. A wonderful fiasco

Whether he is or he isn't, he wasn't in office long enough to be in any position to have earned it. Once he settled in he basically extended all of the Bush Administration's worst policies, which goes to show just how premature the award was. It's like giving out an MVP award in the first half of a season.

It was like giving out the MVP after the first quarter of the first preseason game.

The Chinese Peace Prize is the cheaper look alike of the Nobel Peace Prize.

Keep in mind that the original has been outsourced to China already, and the reason the Chinese Peace Prize is showing up now is because once China produces the amount of Nobel Prizes we order from them, they continue running the plant and producing more Prizes with a slightly altered logo and using cheaper, lead filled materials... you know, instead of the prize saying NOBEL PEACE PRIZE they alter it to NOBLE PIECE PRIZE then continue running the production lines and shipping the inferior products to your local flea market/dirt mall

Much has been written about Obamas Nobel. If nothing else, he's been pretty sensible in realizing the absurdity and just not bringing it up. I don't think I've heard him say "nobel prize" since his acceptance speech.

He got it for not being George Bush. Simple as that.

More like nominating a promising rookie for the MVP award before the first game of the season, and then awarding it after he didn't make any major errors in the first couple games he played.

dittybopper: More like nominating a promising rookie for the MVP award before the first game of the season, and then awarding it after he didn't make any major errors in the first couple games he played.

Now we're getting hyperbolic. He won it in late 2009. The "didn't make any major errors" part is apt but he'd been in office for a while. He just hadn't done anything meaningful as far as world peace goes. When he started doing things they were in the wrong direction but he already had the prize by then.

In any case, the way he won the award (namely: doing nothing) shows how much of a joke it is, but he's hardly the most WTF nominee. He was merely as relevant to geopolitics as my cat at the time.

Yeah, not like that Nobel Peace Prize where you can invade a few countries and have assassination lists and fly machine gun-toting robots into villages where they murder women and children and still be awarded the title "most peaceful guy on earth.

i loved Noam Chomsky's comment on the issue
"In defense of the committee, we might say that the achievement of doing nothing to advance peace places Obama on a considerably higher moral plane than some of the earlier recipients"

with one sweeping gesture, it takes a true genius can leave everybody in the room not quite sure if they've complimented or derided

I can see how a definition of peace influenced by Mohism could indeed put Putin into consideration for a prize, but forgive me if I find such definitions... questionable.

He's thrown money at the world's problems. A laudable thing to do to be sure, since most billionaires do jack squat... but how many hours he's put into it is a different issue.
