As a lifelong Bengals fan, it's probably a good thing that I have a softball game tonight at 8:30.

Trying to care.....nope, not working.

Sheesh...a double header of suck! First MNF of the year you'd think they would schedule at least one game that was an interesting matchup. Maybe I expect too much of the NFL anymore.

RonwellQuincyDobbs: Can I come watch you play softball instead?

The real entertainment is obviously in the intro tonight. How will they replace Captain Douchecanoe and his phony rowdyness?

I suggest something leggy. Or possibly busty. I don't know, I'm not an intro expert. It could be both.

I remember seeing the schedule for tonight when they first made it up, and thinking "WTF?", and I still think that about the Ravens/Bengals game, but at least the Oakland/SD game is two reasonably evenly-matched teams.

/That sounded a lot more positive in my head.

Bengals @ Ravens should be good. This is two playoff teams after all. Unless you're biatching about it probably being a defensive game. In which case you're a double idiot. First for not appreciating half the game, and second because both teams are coming in with questions in D.

Hey! There's two of us in the world! Hot damn! I'd try and High Five you, but since there's two fans, one of us has to be a first round pick, and the High Five would tear our ACL and knock our shoulder out of socket.

It is great to have football back, though, so I'll just back out of this AFC party and let you kids have fun.

Coo, two division games for the prime time slots. I'm mostly going to be watching to see what the refs screw up, and if the Raiders can snatch the penalty yard lead from the Cowboys.

The Ravens are a playoff team. The Bengals are only a playoff team if they fall into the post-season by accident, or because they suck a little less than one or two of the other teams in the "We suck" division. On their own they are one of the most haphazardly managed and coached teams in the league. The questions on Defense are only one symptom of a much larger problem...the same one that has been there the whole time. A double idiot I may be, but I am not so much of one that I have lost a realistic perspective.

I appreciate the game fully. The NFL does not appreciate the game, and has spent the last 30 years emasculating it piece by piece in an effort to do nothing except milk it for money. I appreciate the game, and watch it on Saturdays when the college games are on. It is still worth watching, despite signs that it is heading down the same road as the NFL. I appreciate the game, but not the NFL. Not at all.

Also, from the Ravens blog:

Under fire for his letter to Steve Bisciotti, requesting the Ravens owner "take the necessary action" and direct linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo to "cease and desist" his advocacy of gay rights, Delegate Emmett C. Burns Jr. is walking back his position, according to The Baltimore Sun.

Now, the Baltimore County Democrat and pastor of the Rising Sun First Baptist Church in Woodlawn says Ayanbadejo should be allowed to speak in favor of same sex-marriage.

"Upon reflection, he has his First Amendment rights," Burns said per The Sun. "And I have my First Amendment rights. ... Each of us has the right to speak our opinions. The football player and I have a right to speak our minds."

Ayanbadejo told The Sun that the delegate's revision is "a little too late from a damage control perspective" but hopes that Burns will "open his heart" on the issue.

If you're a fan of minimum one-error-per-inning quality softball, you'll love it.

The first game is two playoff teams from last year, but god forbid ESPN have anyone other than SD play in that second game. Also, BERMAN is calling SD@OAK. *MUTE*

I told my coworker (Raiders fan) that the game where the replacement refs cause so much of a problem that it makes news beyond the sporting world will be during an AFC West matchup, preferably involving the Raiders, and bonus if it happens on a Monday.

Thus, tonight is when things get comically disastrous. I'm talking 20 minutes quarters. I'm talking 6 downs. I'm talking people taking free kicks from inside their opponents 20 after a play where all six receivers go in motion on 5th down and -8 to go.

Just because it's the Raiders.

That. Right there. Nailed it.

The difference between football and full-contact ballet is that one is a physical game played with an oblong leather ball by men willing to sacrifice their own physical well-being over and over again just to gain another ten yards, and the other is a weird sort of choreographed linear dance run by the NFL.

I'll be at the Ravens game tonight. so psyched up! I'm curious to see how Kruger will do with the pass rush. I know that we're going to miss having JJ this season, but I hope that the defense can continue to be as aggressive as they were last year.

i'm still scratching me head abuot Seattle's ghost timeout last night. I haven't read Peter King yet but I'm sure he'll have something about it.

"last night i texted mike pereira, he texted me about the rule, i then texted tom brady to congratule him, then he texted me, and i texted him 'what about that timeout'? but he didn't text me back OMG so I texted Aaron Rodgers, and he texted back 'dam we lost :( lol j/k' so then I texted......"

I was 8 at that point, so while I had watched a few games (and been to one) I obviously wasn't a knowledgeable fan. That said, I have no idea where you're going with that thought in regards to the two games tonight...one features two teams which are as "throwback" in their construction and mentalities as any, and the other features a classic rivalry dating back to the early days of the AFL. Or is that just a blanket statement regarding the rules changes & progression of the league as a whole vs. in its early post-merger days?

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess that you're not a fan of the designated hitter, either. ;)

One nice thing about being on Alaska time. The games start at 3 and 6:15. Come home from my last flight around 4, turn on the TV, and I can watch the games on my DVR, and should still be done before 10pm, getting to skip the commercials the whole time. Plus, being in Alaska means that the Democrats have pretty much conceded the state, and the Republicans won't waste cash on our 3 guaranteed electoral votes, so no stupid political commercials if I do manage to catch up with the live feed.

Eh, that's relative. Rodgers in a rhythm is harder to stop than Cutler in a rhythm. If it gets into a shootout, even as a die-hard Bears fan, I know that's bad news for Chicago.

The real question will be on the lines. The Bears O-line looked passable against the JV squad yesterday, and Melton was a beast on our D-line. A grinding game is Chicago's best bet.

First, I can enjoy damn near any NFL game and this is the first damn week. Second, there's 50% playoff turnover virtually every year and we have no idea yet who the new playoff teams are and who they will be replacing. Third, none of these four teams was below .500 last year, not one of them.

Summary conclusion - these games don't blow, you are just realizing that you actually don't like football as much as you though you did.

Yeah, I've avoided trash-talking my Packer-fan relatives. On paper, the Bears have the offensive firepower to compete in a shootout with any team. The defense, while aged and in decline, is still good. And the special teams is pretty damn good.

At the very least the division will be a fun one to watch again this year. I just hope the main players stay healthy.

I'm a Ravens fan, the team most would identify as the "good one" among the four. I sincerely hope that tonight's game is as one-sided as some people here believe it will be, but nothing in the two teams' rosters nor recent history suggests it will be. Their two head-to-head meetings in 2011 were decided by a total of 15 points; in 2010 it was a total of 11 points. You have to go all the way back to 2009 to find the last time a Ravens-Bengals game was won by more than one score (and the Bengals won that one).

Having read a few storeis now about the ghost timeout, i guess i can muster a resounding "mleh", but only because the Redbirds pulled it out. they clearly goofed and as Peter King noted, the game observer apparently couldn't be bothered to correct what was happening ont he field.

a local sports wrtier theorizes (on his twitter) that the observer knew the situation was wrong, but was given a choice between correcting the situation and taking a TO away from Carroll, after he'd been told he had one, or just riding the situation out. they obviously chose the latter.

and for all the handwringing about what could have happened, the regular refs screw up too. give these guys a break. Ed Hochuli's phantom whistle in Donks / Patriots (or whoemver it was) a few years ago?

This is a hard fact for Pack fans to accept, due in part to our record last year so please forgive my fellow owners. As a football fan, I totally agree. Lions are probably going to put on another show, and look to have healthier running backs. The Bears have filled in their offensive weaknesses and Bennett's relationship with Cutler is still under-emphasized. The Pack didn't use Cedric enough yesterday for me to think he is a factor, but Cobb showed that he is still going to be an X-factor threat they clearly need. No catches for Driver makes me has so many sads.

The Vikes look better....I guess.

This is my biggest "meh" when people start whining about the replacements. The regular refs screw up in every game, too. So the replacements screw up an extra one or two calls...which will decrease with experience.

Only problem I have is that they don't blow plays dead soon enough. They'll call false start and then the play will run and come back for the penalty. They need to throw the flag and whistle it dead before someone gets hurt.

Technically, they still could win more than last year, but I was specifically referring to the regular season so I will not try to weasel out of that one. See the bolded part above. In 3 straight losses, the Packers receivers have been jammed at the line with 7 or 8 defenders dropping into coverage and the rushers getting good pressure on Rodgers. The coaching staff seemingly done nothing to address this glaring issue.

Don't get me wrong, Thompson is a great GM and McCarthy is a fantastic motivating and preparing coach, but Thompson will occasionally stick with guys who underperform for too long (AJ Hawk, most of our backup O-Linemen) and McCarthy has a ton of trouble moving away from the game plan when it clearly isn't working (Well highlighted by the multiple down field passes on 3rd and short that were either knocked away or off target, also punting on 4th and short when you're down in the 4th quarter from the 50? Seriously?)

I thought these issues would be alleviated, if not solved, but after this game it is clear that either our players, especially on D, are woefully under performing or the team learned nothing from last year. Neither one makes me rest easy as a fan.

I wrote in another thread that I thought our D did pretty well after the first half. They were going against a very good ball control team and if it weren't for a couple of factors (Akers freak leg, Rodger's int, lack of offensive drive capability) they could of limited SF to 20 or less. Nonetheless, that game plan is how teams are going to approach them now. They going to have to learn to beat that plan quick.

there were a couple of plays in the games i watched (saints wash, redbirds, donks pittsburgh) were there where some blatant no-calls but other than the ghost timeout, i didn't see anything that struck me as wildly "bad". adn frankly, i don't know the ins and outs of what happened yesterday, on seattle burning their last timeout due to player injury inside two minutes.

it was funny though, to hear the game announcer (the former player i think) insist they got it right.....when hours later, every NFL source -- including the ref himself -- said they kicked the call. "THEY GOT THIS ONE RIGHT, JIM, GOOD JOB BY THE OFFICIAL!"

one of the guys workign the arizona game looked 19 years old. and no, i'm not kidding. he looked young as shiat.

roc6783: Technically, they still could win more than last year, but I was specifically referring to the regular season so I will not try to weasel out of that one. See the bolded part above. In 3 straight losses, the Packers receivers have been jammed at the line with 7 or 8 defenders dropping into coverage and the rushers getting good pressure on Rodgers. The coaching staff seemingly done nothing to address this glaring issue.

Good thing the Bears never get pressure when they just rush their front 4.

roc6783:
I thought these issues would be alleviated, if not solved, but after this game it is clear that either our players, especially on D, are woefully under performing or the team learned nothing from last year. Neither one makes me rest easy as a fan.

///Or I am reading way too much into one game against one of the best teams in the league, but I doubt it.

Nah, you're reading way too much into it. I was just hassling you to see if you'd own up to that one thread a couple of weeks ago. The Packers are still probably going to win the division and will probably win on Thursday too. Nothing but respect here.

You didn't see the SF/GB game did you?

My biggest issue with the refs is they add ~30 seconds to each play. They're just all-around slower and feel the need to conference everytime something occurs. The general crapiness of the calls is a wash right now.

I am, however, expecting one of them to get caught taking bribes. I mean they won't ever get on this stage again, the Union will see to that, so the offers must be awfully tempting.

huh. Hermansen later told pool reporter Kent Somers of azcentral sports that he goofed.

"It was my error," he said. "We gave them the additional timeout because of the incomplete pass stopping the clock before the injury occurred. When in effect, the clock has no bearing on the play at all, whether it's stopped or running. We should not have given them the additional timeout."

It wasn't the first time something like this has happened to Hermansen, a high school football referee from Northern California hired to work as a replacement for the locked out NFL officials.

Hermansen was the head referee for a preseason game between the Denver Broncos and San Francisco 49ers when Denver coach John Fox was called for unsportsmanlike conduct because he challenged a call he wasn't allowed to challenge.

Only, he was.

In that instance, the 49ers recovered their own fumble, and Fox threw his red challenge flag. Hermansen, the Denver Post reported, thought he was challenging the fumble and the recovery, which Fox couldn't do. So Hermansen marched off 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct, the penalty for challenging an unchallengeable play.

Problem was, Fox wanted to protest where the ball was spotted, not the fumble or the recovery. Hermansen eventually relented and picked up the flag.

huh. so this guy screwed up in preseason...

and i'm confused about the "challenging unchallengable play" rule....there was a play yesterday where Arizona sacked Wilson, for about a 6yd loss. but, the Seattle OT (crimini, i tihnk) and Cards LB had offsetting personal fouls. Ball spotted at original LOS for 2nd and 10 i think. Whiz threw the flag, and said he was challenging the spot. They conferred, the ruling was you can't challenge the spot, so the red flag was picked up, no challenge burned.

but....i don't think they assessed Whis for unsportsmanlike conduct. could be wrong.

Can't wait for thursday. Hopefully get the awful taste out of my mouth from yesterday. Unfortunately, the Bears looked pretty good. Go Pack Go.

I had to work and didn't see the game, but sounds like the Pack had a good second half push. I'm pretty sure we'll meet again in the NFC playoffs.

I was pretty surprised Alex Smith ended up being the 5th best QB on Sunday; maybe Harbagh's got him achieving his potential, finally. The 4 sacks worry me, though.Hope the Niner's O-Line will hold for the rest of the season.

Maybe I know more about football than some naysayers (yes, I do).. but the supposedly more open Baltimore passing game -Torrey Smiff- (with a killer running game and still a good defense)..plus the maturation of AJ Green..and the curious factor of the Law Firm on a team that might make him run often..has my interest.

The ever confusing Rivers and the hide and seek SD offense..plus Malcolm Floyd being the defacto #1 receiver.. and a healthy Gates makes me pay some attention to the Bolts. Run DMC probably being one the the best RB's in the game -when healthy- has my interest.. and who the heck knows what happens with the Raiders passing attack.. and as always, we're going to see some ridiculously bad penalties taken by the Raiders defense..

I have no dog in the fight, but I am still interested in tonight's games.

I'm an unabashed Skins fan, so my bias here is large, but I swear the non-fumble call on Jimmy Graham in the first half was horrid. The refs ruled that his "forward progress had stopped" and therefore he was "down" and couldn't have fumbled, and the play is non-reviewable. However, he had *just* cuaght the ball, and had *just* made contact with the defenders, and he had literally never stopped movign forward the entire time! It isn't like he stopped for a second, and was stood-up by a couple defenders and started running again, or even a pause. He hit a guy, slowed down and was falling forward, the ball slipped out, there is a scramble for it, and THEN they blow the whistle and claim forward progress? Complete and utter BS.

If we hadn't won the game, I would have been irate

Disclaimer: i only cuaght the last third or so of that game....had this huge hcurch thing i had to go to. so i missed most of that game.

buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut.....that reminds me of the Giants/Cards game last year, where I think it was Victor Cruz, with the Giants trailing Arizona late, and Cruz (or whomever) catches the ball, trips on his feet, hits the ground untouched, THE FRREAKING BALL COMES OUT and Arizona recovers. but he was scrambling forward when the ball came out.

inexplically, he was ruled down, because the refs said he "gave himself up". uhhh.......he tripped, was untouched, and was mvoing forward trying to get more yards with Arizona players descending on him.

2-3 plays later, Eli throws a TD with like, 25 seconds left, ballgame.

the rule cited afterwards was that if a player gives himself up and makes no effort to advance (think of when a player wisely stays inbounds just short of the goal line to run clock) the play is dead. my problem with that play was that he didn't give himself up. he tripped and still went forward.

Sure, that's probably true this season, but once every decade the Vikings make a run at the NFCCG where they predictably lose, and their fans are insufferable PURPLE PEOPLE EATER PURPLE JESUS PURPLE FREAK PURPLE TARKENTON loudmouths for a couple of years until they come crashing back to earth and threaten to move to LA.

I didn't say anything about not counting "any sports championships before my arbitrary deadline". Hell, I never proposed any deadline. I only said that the two aren't equal.

League Championships count; absolutely. But they're not the same. Seems like I've stepped on your toes regarding Green Bay's 11 NFL Championship titles (but not nearly as bad as SF stomped your asses at home yesterday). But I digress... Those 11 NFL Championships aren't the same as the 4 AFL-NFL Championship/Super Bowl titles that Green Bay has won since '66. Prior to that, the NFL wouldn't even entertain the idea of playing aginst the best the AFL had to offer. A lot of competition, and damned good competition I might add, was completely ignored by the NFL before then. The two simply aren't the same is all I'm saying.

Now, I'd be gald to hear an argument from you as to how they are the same, provided you can put down your bag of dicks long enough to type it up.

I'd imagine his point, which is valid, would be that the Packers' championships won in the 1930s were won in what was essentially an entirely different game. Your point, which is equally valid, is that it's impossible to nail down a concrete year in which "that game" became "this game". Thus, the only sensible conclusion would be that past championships don't mean jack, and all that matters is who wins this year...which will obviously be the Ravens. :)

At any rate,

1. Please do not insult my bag of dicks, they are sensitive.
2. The competition argument really doesn't hold much water given segregation.
3. They were the best team during the era in which they played. This isn't baseball where you can have a decently legitimate shot at comparing number is on a normalized scale. The tactics and rules have been so fundamentally altered since even the 90's, that era by era comparisons border on meaningless.
4. I really have no beef with you or Harv, I am just pot-stirring in a long dead thread.
5. I would argue the SF dig, but scoreboard.

Why did the piece of shiat Ravens have to be facing such a suck team this week? I wanted to see them crushed, in honor of Art.

Ray Ray was playing up the hurt over losing Art a little too much. He looked like he was about to collapse during the anthem.

knbber2: Last person to see Art Modell alive: RAY LEWIS

Just sayin', he has a history.

I'd crack a joke that he was asked to take a pay cut but Ray's got enough connections that one of you would sell me out and my ass would get stabbed before the playoffs

Thing is that my running game is one giant question mark (Michael Turner, Trent Richardson and Roy Helu) and I decided to take the risk and downgrade my QB position (I still have Eli as my bench QB) in order to upgrade at RB. With the ridiculous numbers Newton posted last year, he should still be a consistent 16-20 point player even if he does take a bit of a Soph. slump.

hulk hogan meat shoes: Why did they put Cincinnati on Monday Night Football? I know it's divisional, but the only AFC north game that belongs on national TV is Ravens/Steelers.

Bengals made the playoffs last year, so they figured it would be good this year as well. The problem is the Ravens are better.

Alright, here's my FF question for you guys. Should I complete the following trade, I get Jamaal Charles and Pierre Garcon for Antonio Brown and Torrey Smith.

My current RB/WR roster is:
Matt Forte
Kevin Smith
Beanie Wellls
Stevan Ridley

Greg Jennings
Antonio Brown
Torrey Smith
Reggie Wayne
Ashlon Jeffery
Titus Young

/No backup TE

Newton is gonna suffer a sophomore slide methinks. You may regret this.

On the otherhand, Helu doesn't add much value. I wouldn't feel the comfortable starting Ridley week to week either, though. I have Newton now but would have drafted brees over him. After week 1 I'd still draft Drew over Newton. I think Newton's problem this year may be for every 25+ PT game he has he also has 3 to 6 sub-12 pt games. I kind of hope Newton has a huge game next week so I can trade him

I don't know that I'll need to start Ridley every week, but the big problem there was since Helu was pretty much worthless, the only flex options I had left were Mike Tolbert and Greg Little. When Little didn't get me even one tenth of a goddamn point this week, I knew I needed to make a move. This at least allows for some flexibility, especially if Richardson doesn't pan out or Michael Turner starts to show his age.

This was done on purpose; NBC paid a boatload of money to get that Sunday Night game to be the premier game. Just think of it more like NBC got MNF (outbidding ABC) and moved it to Sunday and ESPN took SNF and moved it to Monday. Basically, the ESPN game has always been pretty shoddy.

I've gotta do some research, but Titus Young is going in favor of a backup TE (okay, actually a starting TE and putting my J-E-S-T player on the bench). After that I have to figure out who's got the better opportunity next week out of the remaining bench & Pierre Thomas.

First half thoughts:

-That incomplete ruling on the obvious catch by A.J. Green was bullshiat. Marvin Lewis not challenging it was just stupid.
-Ray Lewis should get credit for a pass defensed after breaking up Ed Reed's INT in the end zone just before the half. :p
-Loving the offense so far. Flacco has looked great (with the sole exception of the near pick he threw on that crossing route in the 2nd). Jacoby Jones looks like he may finally be the answer as a third WR. Ray Rice has looked as good as ever both running & receiving.
-The defense has not looked good, at least not by Ravens standards. They're getting pushed around on the line & getting beat in coverage way too much (Dalton should have at least 3 more completions on the lame ruling above & two flat-out drops).
-Cary Williams: STFU. You're only starting because Jimmy Smith can't cover his own shadow...you have not earned the right to talk shiat on the field.

/Hai. :)

FriarReb98: All these stories of their 20s and how they can't party anymore are making me nostalgic. Had 3 drinks at my cousin's wedding a couple of weeks ago and realized it's the most I've had in one night in YEARS.

\mid-30s

Oh, I can still polish off 15 or 20 drinks easily (I play in a bar trivia league where we get a point per drink, up to 15 per half, and my team depends on me to help with that) but I just have realized drinking a liter of rum at home with a friend before going out to drink that much is a bad idea. I never got hangovers until recently, and they definitely seem to cascade if I drink too much on back to back nights. (Tomorrow's going to suck.)

Defense is illegal in the NFL now.

FYI - Carson Palmer's Passer rating has been above 130 the last 3 or 4 times he's played the Chargers. I think he maxed it twice actually. Next game could be 80 total points.

Over the past 10 years all the AFC West have had fairly decent defenses. Not at the same time, but do you not remember the Chargers 14-2 or 13-3 seasons? The defense wasn't the biggest problem those years. Martyball at the wrong time was.

What's for dinner?

Dinner is reheated soup with extra added spiciness and cheese melted in. My knee learned how to bend sideways 20 years ago After that if I do something weird and clumsy enough to lightly sprain a good knee, well I can barely walk for a week or two and have a decent legit limp for a month or three.

What I did this time was slipped in some mud on my sidewalk. I made the mud washing out an area by steps I was fixing, I needed to go to the hardware store before it closed so left mud there "til later" when I got back I sltepped lightly on the mud so as not to get my shooes too muddy. The mud was slick as a great grannys cooter and twice as nasty. So i did an instant sideways splits and lost my walkin privileges for a spell.

MBTAhole: I think the most interesting thing about this game is that they've ignored or don't know the "every scoring play must be reviewed" rule

They're reviewing them all, they just are quick to notify the head ref and move on. There is no requirement to let the broadcast team or the fans know it was upheld.

The NFL needs to put the hammer down on the clowns in the booth. They're doing more to whip up the "replacement/scab refs suck" mentality than the actual results on the field.

I swear, if ESPN started running tampon commercials during these games half of you (male) Farkers would be biatching about the cost of Tampax in the morning.

Not sure on the official stats, but it looks like Vick and Weeden are in a dead heat with 4 INT, 2 fumbles (none lost? so of course they don't count.)

I kept waiting for that to be explained -- still waiting.

The rule is supposed to be across the board, no matter the score or what time in the game it is, all scoring plays are reviewed. So, ya, I'm with you. They've seemingly suspended that rule this entire game. Maybe there's a provision:
*every scoring play must be reviewed UNLESS it's a MNF double header and we want any hope of airing game 2 prior to 10:30 EST to retain viewers.

Either Brandon Weeden or Mike Vick IIRC. Both of them had 4 turnovers, but Vick won.

Tannehill also had 4 turnovers.

Luck had 4 too.

So this is one of the reasons why Joe's stats don't look as good as some other guys. The game is over with almost a quarter left, the offense will switch to running and Joe won't need to throw the ball again until next week. When your defense is this soul-crushing, you just don't need to throw as much.

Rule change this season. The shoulder is considered part of the "helmet area" for tackling purposes.

Seriously? How are they supposed to tackle now? Are they expected to run up and grab the person with a bear hug? Or push them with two hands?

mikaloyd: Dinner is reheated soup with extra added spiciness and cheese melted in.

Dinner sounds good; the knee, not so much. :( Sorry to hear that, man.

Negative. They didn't bother to look for more than a single a replay at The Lawfirm's questionable TD. I'm not complaining and don't care who the officials are. I just don't understand why the rule is clearly being ignored this game.

rka: The NFL needs to put the hammer down on the clowns in the booth. They're doing more to whip up the "replacement/scab refs suck" mentality than the actual results on the field.

I swear, if ESPN started running tampon commercials during these games half of you (male) Farkers would be biatching about the cost of Tampax in the morning.

I'd prefer the NFL have no influence at all on the commentary, but that's never going to happen. And as for ESPN advertising, It won't be long before they make those guys wear sponsored hats.
