As a lifelong Bengals fan, it's probably a good thing that I have a softball game tonight at 8:30.

Trying to care.....nope, not working.

2012-09-10 09:41:33 AM
Sheesh...a double header of suck! First MNF of the year you'd think they would schedule at least one game that was an interesting matchup. Maybe I expect too much of the NFL anymore.

RonwellQuincyDobbs: Can I come watch you play softball instead?

The real entertainment is obviously in the intro tonight. How will they replace Captain Douchecanoe and his phony rowdyness?

I suggest something leggy. Or possibly busty. I don't know, I'm not an intro expert. It could be both.

I remember seeing the schedule for tonight when they first made it up, and thinking "WTF?", and I still think that about the Ravens/Bengals game, but at least the Oakland/SD game is two reasonably evenly-matched teams.

/That sounded a lot more positive in my head.

Bengals @ Ravens should be good. This is two playoff teams after all. Unless you're biatching about it probably being a defensive game. In which case you're a double idiot. First for not appreciating half the game, and second because both teams are coming in with questions in D.

Hey! There's two of us in the world! Hot damn! I'd try and High Five you, but since there's two fans, one of us has to be a first round pick, and the High Five would tear our ACL and knock our shoulder out of socket.

+1 for "Captain Douchecanoe", btw.

MNF = 9:30 in the goddamn morning.

It is great to have football back, though, so I'll just back out of this AFC party and let you kids have fun.

I didn't realize Junior recently doubled down on the crazy Obama bashing. From a few weeks ago:

Coo, two division games for the prime time slots. I'm mostly going to be watching to see what the refs screw up, and if the Raiders can snatch the penalty yard lead from the Cowboys.

The Ravens are a playoff team. The Bengals are only a playoff team if they fall into the post-season by accident, or because they suck a little less than one or two of the other teams in the "We suck" division. On their own they are one of the most haphazardly managed and coached teams in the league. The questions on Defense are only one symptom of a much larger problem...the same one that has been there the whole time. A double idiot I may be, but I am not so much of one that I have lost a realistic perspective.

I appreciate the game fully. The NFL does not appreciate the game, and has spent the last 30 years emasculating it piece by piece in an effort to do nothing except milk it for money. I appreciate the game, and watch it on Saturdays when the college games are on. It is still worth watching, despite signs that it is heading down the same road as the NFL. I appreciate the game, but not the NFL. Not at all.

Also, from the Ravens blog:

Under fire for his letter to Steve Bisciotti, requesting the Ravens owner "take the necessary action" and direct linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo to "cease and desist" his advocacy of gay rights, Delegate Emmett C. Burns Jr. is walking back his position, according to The Baltimore Sun.

Now, the Baltimore County Democrat and pastor of the Rising Sun First Baptist Church in Woodlawn says Ayanbadejo should be allowed to speak in favor of same sex-marriage.

"Upon reflection, he has his First Amendment rights," Burns said per The Sun. "And I have my First Amendment rights. ... Each of us has the right to speak our opinions. The football player and I have a right to speak our minds."

Ayanbadejo told The Sun that the delegate's revision is "a little too late from a damage control perspective" but hopes that Burns will "open his heart" on the issue.

If you're a fan of minimum one-error-per-inning quality softball, you'll love it.

The first game is two playoff teams from last year, but god forbid ESPN have anyone other than SD play in that second game. Also, BERMAN is calling SD@OAK. *MUTE*

I told my coworker (Raiders fan) that the game where the replacement refs cause so much of a problem that it makes news beyond the sporting world will be during an AFC West matchup, preferably involving the Raiders, and bonus if it happens on a Monday.

Thus, tonight is when things get comically disastrous. I'm talking 20 minutes quarters. I'm talking 6 downs. I'm talking people taking free kicks from inside their opponents 20 after a play where all six receivers go in motion on 5th down and -8 to go.

Just because it's the Raiders.

That. Right there. Nailed it.

The difference between football and full-contact ballet is that one is a physical game played with an oblong leather ball by men willing to sacrifice their own physical well-being over and over again just to gain another ten yards, and the other is a weird sort of choreographed linear dance run by the NFL.

I'll be at the Ravens game tonight. so psyched up! I'm curious to see how Kruger will do with the pass rush. I know that we're going to miss having JJ this season, but I hope that the defense can continue to be as aggressive as they were last year.

for you B'More farkers, I have a season ticket-- sect 540 (upper end zone, behind goal post) that I sell. single ticket, "Madden style view". I already sold my ticket for tonight--- but I still have the SNF one against the Pats still available... (and pretty much every other game too) e-mail in profile.

i'm still scratching me head abuot Seattle's ghost timeout last night. I haven't read Peter King yet but I'm sure he'll have something about it.

"last night i texted mike pereira, he texted me about the rule, i then texted tom brady to congratule him, then he texted me, and i texted him 'what about that timeout'? but he didn't text me back OMG so I texted Aaron Rodgers, and he texted back 'dam we lost :( lol j/k' so then I texted......"

he doesn't do it as much now but a few years back his column was him yammering on about this wonderful technology called 'texting'. we get it, Pedro, texting is fun. will you STFU about all the people you text?

I was 8 at that point, so while I had watched a few games (and been to one) I obviously wasn't a knowledgeable fan. That said, I have no idea where you're going with that thought in regards to the two games tonight...one features two teams which are as "throwback" in their construction and mentalities as any, and the other features a classic rivalry dating back to the early days of the AFL. Or is that just a blanket statement regarding the rules changes & progression of the league as a whole vs. in its early post-merger days?

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess that you're not a fan of the designated hitter, either. ;)

Thanks for the reassurance, but even as a Cutler hater I know that since he was able to find a rhythm he is going to be difficult to stop especially with a healthy Forte.

One nice thing about being on Alaska time. The games start at 3 and 6:15. Come home from my last flight around 4, turn on the TV, and I can watch the games on my DVR, and should still be done before 10pm, getting to skip the commercials the whole time. Plus, being in Alaska means that the Democrats have pretty much conceded the state, and the Republicans won't waste cash on our 3 guaranteed electoral votes, so no stupid political commercials if I do manage to catch up with the live feed.

Eh, that's relative. Rodgers in a rhythm is harder to stop than Cutler in a rhythm. If it gets into a shootout, even as a die-hard Bears fan, I know that's bad news for Chicago.

The real question will be on the lines. The Bears O-line looked passable against the JV squad yesterday, and Melton was a beast on our D-line. A grinding game is Chicago's best bet.

First, I can enjoy damn near any NFL game and this is the first damn week. Second, there's 50% playoff turnover virtually every year and we have no idea yet who the new playoff teams are and who they will be replacing. Third, none of these four teams was below .500 last year, not one of them.

Summary conclusion - these games don't blow, you are just realizing that you actually don't like football as much as you though you did.

Yeah, I've avoided trash-talking my Packer-fan relatives. On paper, the Bears have the offensive firepower to compete in a shootout with any team. The defense, while aged and in decline, is still good. And the special teams is pretty damn good.

At the very least the division will be a fun one to watch again this year. I just hope the main players stay healthy.

Hey, roc, what happened to your firm belief that the Packers were going to win more games this year than they did last year? Where did the optimism go?

I'm a Ravens fan, the team most would identify as the "good one" among the four. I sincerely hope that tonight's game is as one-sided as some people here believe it will be, but nothing in the two teams' rosters nor recent history suggests it will be. Their two head-to-head meetings in 2011 were decided by a total of 15 points; in 2010 it was a total of 11 points. You have to go all the way back to 2009 to find the last time a Ravens-Bengals game was won by more than one score (and the Bengals won that one).
