The Obama administration gave Shell the green light to start "certain limited preparatory activities," including work related to the installation of a blowout preventer, on August 30. The government had been set to approve new drilling in Arctic waters off Alaska before BP's disastrous 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico prompted a review of existing plans.

There's just something poetic about exploring for oil in a region now accessible due to dramatic ice loss from warming.
Oh how I loathe the oil and gas industries.

How are they gonna drill in the arctic without manually breaking up the ice and therefore causing runaway global warming through the albedo reduction? Why is Obama in bed with foreign big oil companies when big oil is already sitting on their leases to keep the price of oil high when he could be working with small oil companies who will actually want to bring the arctic oil to market which will increase supply and bring down prices?

We learned from the climategate email scandal that Shell is working with the climate hoaxers. Shell should be banned from drilling US oil and BP as well. Even Exxon will stonewall bringing any arctic oil to market.

Roight. Shell starts drilling today and the oil starts flowing in November, just in time for the election. The election of 2016, that is.

I don't get Obama. He must know that nothing he does will ever placate the right yet he keeps trying, all the while pissing off those that do support him.

If you're a lefty, you're supposed to be upset about Obama's flagrant disregard for the environment; if you're a righty, you're supposed to be upset that he's blocking domestic oil exploration in order to deliberately keep gas prices high so he can force people to stop driving cars and switch instead to outrage-fueled derpmobiles.

Befuddled: I don't get Obama. He must know that nothing he does will ever placate the right yet he keeps trying, all the while pissing off those that do support him.

FTA - "While this is an interim step only, this is like a building inspector letting a developer start construction on a skyscraper on shaky ground before the safety plans are even complete," the environmental advocacy group Sierra Club said in a late August statement critical of the Obama administration. "It's premature, it's unwarranted and it's wrong -- especially when it's happening in one of the most pristine places on earth."

Votes, man. He pissed off the energy sector workers by blocking the Keystone pipeline. That move alone cost us thousands of jobs, many of them union, but made the envirotards happy. Now he's trying to get back in good with the energy sector unions, by pissing on the envirotards now that they've donated millions to him and can't get it back.

Divide and conquer, and he's playing both sides pretty well.

I don't know. What upcoming event has influenced the fact that domestic oil production is at a 14 year high?

I didn't realize that they could just turn on the taps before an election like that.

And why would he? According to certain parties Obama wants the gas prices high. I love the fact that Obama is the Pandora's box of a president, he contains every evil in the world, even the contradictory ones.

This is an outrage! How can we sit still and not demand that this African fartstick be impeached? Are we just going to sit by and acknowledge that there's nothing wrong with this? Are we going to remain idle while this administration enacts policies that are in no way harmful to the American people?

Where is the anger, folks?

Everyone Else: "Um...we don't think that. That's just you."

Subby: "You have to think that! You voted for him to gut the oil industry!"

Everyone else: "No we didn't. It wasn't even an election issue. He just put a hold on drilling pending safety review after a major disaster, and if we DID vote for him to do that and he didn't, why the fark would we vote for you?"

Subby: "DRILL BABY DRILL!"

DURR.

For a group that insists that "drill baby drill" is the answer to all energy issues, you guys are amazingly ignorant on how oil production actually works.

Speaking of delicious things, speaking as a culinary student (even though I'm a vegetarian), I'm a little concerned about how a drilling incident might affect wild salmon populations. They're so much tastier than farm-raised fish.

If a spill off the north slope is large enough to bugger up the Gulf of Alaska, we got bigger problems than salmon taste.
