The argument I used with my parents when I smoked was that I could step outside and be struck by a falling piece of random space junk and die just as easily as getting cancer from smoking. And according to the state of California, pretty much everything causes cancer so we have that going for us.

well she passed away in 2010 from an illness and at the time I liked my long hair, tattoo removal is too costly so I said, "One out of three is as good as I can do for you mom" so I put the pack down and haven't smoked in two years. And I am not trying to start a smoking/anti smoking rant here, my wife smokes and I don't care secondhand smoke doesn't bother me, just don't blow it in my general direction and I am fine.

I smoked Marlboros for 18 years. I can tell a Marlboro from any other cigarette from 100 paces. Mostly because I've always been allergic to cigarettes, and they always made me sick.

The fireproof shiat kinda blends them all together for me.

I was on holiday in Goa a few years back and the little 'town' that grew up around the hotel was selling branded cigarettes for around 10% the UK price. Watching people complain they tasted like shiat was priceless, especially when they realised they had 200 of them.

Who's done more research on the subject than the good people at the American Tobacco Industry? They say it's harmless. Why would they lie? If you're dead, you can't smoke.

Anytime any of those anti-smoking commercials come on the tv it makes think of wanting to go for a smoke.

It's sooo much easier to engage in tax-level arbitrage than to make a product. I mean, if you're going to have to smuggle anyhow why bother with the setup costs of a factory making fake product.

I'd be more inclined to think someone is talking bullshiat. Gangsters aren't the best business men, but they know all about minimizing investment risks. A shipping container full of stolen or low tax cigs is a lot more profitable than making them from scratch.

Exactly. The rate of 'fakes' could have been well under 1%, sold only to rubes who were unlikely to come back. The contaminants were probably trace amounts because they were made in a lousy black market factory under even the standards of tobacco factories. Or using discarded contaminated tobacco(it'd be cheap).

This stuff is why when I propose legalizing weed I specify putting *reasonable* sin taxes on it. Then, if you're still selling illegally, come down on you with the full force of the DEA.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if that's what I was being sold on the reservations from the Senecas.

Great Britain passed tobacco purity laws back in 1751 to deal with crap like that. Scents, flavors, humectants, and such were all verboten until 1986. That's why there's are two general categories of pipe tobacco: English, and aromatic.

Check out this public-domain book, Tobacco from the Grower to the Smoker by Arthur Edmund Tanner, for details. 

Of course with smuggled goods, there's really no telling what the quality is -- all the more reason to reduce tobacco taxes so smuggled tobacco isn't so appealing and people aren't literally smoking shiat.
