Most QR codes don't scan well when put in a perspective photo like that... if it was a straight on photo it would work

Ok, as an apparent luddite, how do these things work? Do you scan them, and your phone goes right to the website? Or does it just show you a url or whatever?

I mean, I totally wasn't going to print these off and post them around town...

I was driving home on the turnpike tonight and passed a small SUV from some business with QR codes on their rear side windows accompanied by the text "SCAN ME". Yes, that's exactly what we should encourage - driving at 75mph while fumbling with your smart phone to try and scan a freakin QR code on another moving vehicle.

The program you use can do either, it can show the url or take you to the website

Of course, QR codes are a New World Order plot, and their use damages chromosomal DNA. Even just glancing at one can lead to eczema or a variety of coughs and impotence. The "QR" actually stands for "Quiet the Rebellion" since naturally, when the humans find out they are being used, there will be a revolution, and eventually the heads of those with so-called 'smartphones' will be on pikes lining the streets.

You are a terrible person.

Although the last time I took time off work to go to a science fiction convention, before I left I posted a QR code outside my office linking to this music video (NSFW lyrics).  So I guess I'm not completely innocent, either.

the QR code doesn't work...

But I did find a good QR reader....If anyone needs a QR reader here's one that usually costs money but is being given away for free and it doesn't require any personal permissions.

QR codes do have their potential uses--you could, for example, affix a unique QR code to every bus stop in a large city, and each one could link to a page that tell you when the next bus arrives at that stop. The problem is that QR codes have been embraced most readily by advertisers who are using them in extremely stupid ways--who the heck is going to scan a QR code on a ketchup bottle just so they can "like" Heinz on Facebook?

This particular QR code is impressive for its scale, but it definitely falls into the "stupid advertiser" category.  And judging by the pictures I'm seeing, I could imagine that the code would be impossible to scan at certain times of day due to shadows.

maldinero: Do I need a cuecat for this?

Heh... that's what I think of every time I see a QR code. Although CueCat had one problem that QR doesn't: CueCat codes were generally in places where one had to physically take the step of carrying the book or container or whatever over to the computer in order to scan it, which was not exactly a convenient thing to do. QR codes, on the other hand, are read by a device most people already have with them. Still- I think it solves a problem that doesn't exist.

I was able to scan the photo in the article using a code reader called "Barcode Scanner" by "ZXing Team".
It took a lot of work and I had to rotate and pull back to get it to scan.

The more popular "QR Droid" app was unable to scan it in that perspective.
Update: I was able to scan it using "QR Droid" after updating to the latest version which appears to have a wider scan rectangle.

Apparently the creator of the Big QR Code Corn Maze seems to not realise that one has to actually have a certain level of dark/light contrast for QR codes to read properly. (Fortunately, nothing that a little love with Gimp and dodge/burn tools with the pixel brush set at a width of 29 can't fix. :D)

Had to fiddle the image with photoshop in order to make the QR code scannable. Obviously airplane riders or angels are the only ones to scan it

What about the QR codes on billboards? That's a smart idea there.
