I think the main problem is their distinct lack of facial hair. If the beard does not reach the belt, a dwarf he be not!

Fili and Kili are meant to be very young; I think that's why they gave them hardly any beard. However, Thorin's lack of beardawesome is inexcusable.

I love the Hobbit and all, but I have to agree with you. I don't think there is actually a way to translate Tolkein's dwarves to film without them looking utterly silly. So stop trying.

Gimli was okay because there was only one of him and they didn't overdo it.

Yeah, my thoughts too. Since there are a bunch of dwarves, they probably realized they had to make them very distinctive, otherwise no one would ever be able to tell them apart. So they gave them stupid hair. I'll still watch it, but I think they look pretty cheesy.

And those were moments of often cheesy humour set against a pretty dark story. If anything, LOTR needed them just to lighten the mood a little.

I'm trying to read The Hobbit now and man is it boring. I guess I just don't like Tolkien's writing style because the actual story is ok, but I just can't get into it the way it's written.

Still looking forward to the movie, I think Jackson will be able to tell the story in an exciting way on screen.

No. They made Gimli a joke.

I was glad they cut Bombadil. The Scouring of the Shire would have been cool to see but wasn't really necessary. I could understand combining a couple of characters into Arwen, and even the unnecessary love story didn't bother me much.

But damn it. They made a loyal and badass dwarf warrior into the comic relief midget sidekick. Bastards.

Heavenly Creatures was a long time ago, and Peter Jackson is one of the many artists who have gone downhill as they've aged. this should have been Gilliam's.

Looks pretty good to me.. though Thorin looks rather youngish, I do have a minor mancrush on Richard Armitage.

I think, in the old illustrated books, there were a LOT more greybeards in the party.

He's stumbled sometimes - King Kong had its' moments, but it was disappointing overall. The Frighteners I think is an overlooked classic. LotR was right time, right place and just about perfect. Never seen his earlier schlocky horror stuff. Heard good things about The Lovely Bones.

This Hobbit trilogy...I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, but it's based on a kids book (I read it when I was a kid) and only what? 300 pages long? I wonder how he's "padding out" the rest of the story.

He's packing in lots of stuff from the appendices of LotR. I have no idea how that's enough to stretch it into 3 movies, but I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt after exceeding my expectations on LotR.

Exactly. They made changes I might not always have wanted, but could usually at least understand their reasoning. But the books were great without slapstick comedy every other page, and the movies could have gotten by with just Merry and Pippen providing the humor. Making Gimli a joke wasn't necessary.

true. in early-mid elementary school our teacher read The Hobbit to us over a few days. it could be a good 2.5 hour movie, but spread over 3 films seems like a huge money-grab. and Lord of the Rings was technically very well done, but it would have been nice to see a different (but equally or more skilled) director at the helm of The Hobbit.

fun idea: if you must have 3 new Hobbit movies, give one to Richard Kelly, one to Gilliam, and one to Jackson, with equal budgets, and release them all about a month apart. that would be epic.

Or give them easily identifiable character traits. Like make one of them tired all the time, another can be really grouchy, one can always be sneezing, maybe a dumb one too. That kind of thing.

gingerjet: Shostie: Are they still doing it in 48 fps? Are people still b*tching about that?

There will be a 24fps version out as well.

As someone who works in the industry and from what was said from the Comicon footage that was screened ( I personally haven't seen anything in 48fps) there was a great deal of "meh... just looks like really clean video" sentiment floating around. Personally I don't think it's a good idea, and I'll wait until some of the reviews come in before I see it in 48. I think you have to have a projector at the theater that is capable of displaying that to get the full benefit.

Now what I will say is I think there's a high degree of probability that Jackson can pull it off.

I wonder why no one ever tried that.

So to your original point, they're dressed and made up outlandishly because dwarves are the new blacksploitation stars?
