+1 for the headline subs.

His team surveyed 12,000 people in more than 30 countries asking them to describe which traits they most valued in a potential partner.

Keeping in mind a "potential partner" is not the same thing as "just want to sleep with," sure, I can buy that. But if you're looking for something short-term, odds are physical attractiveness will still win out.

Also, I'm assuming this is some kind of "ideal" situation. I've seen a lot of unattractive, stupid people find hookups and relationships. Alcohol usually plays a role.

Yeah, I don't buy it. Intelligence is probably playing a greater role in men choosing long term partners but initial attraction and chemistry still come from the senses.

Well, a woman does need intelligence.

I mean, you can't have her putting a piece of bread between two pieces of meat.

For some reason this story reminded me of Kathy Ireland.

Article about how men prefer brains over beauty.

Stock pictures littered all over the page of beautiful models.

Who are the morons that put this sh*t together?

2012-09-09 01:22:58 PM
And I say... is it too much to ask for both?

miss diminutive: Yeah, I don't buy it. Intelligence is probably playing a greater role in men choosing long term partners but initial attraction and chemistry still come from the senses.

Not to mention that there are still plenty of men who prefer a woman to be less intelligent than they are. Part and parcel with the whole male-superiority thing going on within more than 1/3 of the population. Can't have those wimmins thinkin too much, or they'll get up to no good...like votin and takin birth control and such like.

Married to an attractive woman, won't be saying what I came here to say.

Of course, it's nice to have both.

I was thinking something along those lines as well. Here in the deep South, lots of men still seem to be extremely intimidated by intelligent women and can be rather hostile towards us. Hell, even the other women who are toeing the "barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen" line don't really like us.

Attractive and dumb = Fun to bounce on for a night or two.

Attractive and smart = Wife material

From the files of "pulled this research out of my ass"...
Men don't value cooking skills in a spouse? Or that she is attractive over smart?
Failage is high with this one.

For short-term hook-ups, the number one characteristic I look for is "willingness". Doesn't matter how pretty or not the person is, if she comes off to me as being too picky or aloof, I'm not going to spend dating capital trying to hit her up.

Is that true? I'm quite intelligent, if I do say so myself, and I've never had a difficult time getting a dude. They just come out of the woodwork, it seems.

That said, I'd never go out with a dumb dude, no matter how hot and/or wealthy he is. Nothing is a bigger turn-off then idiocy and ignorance.

Born and raised in the deep south, never intimidated by intelligent women, and have never cottoned to the idea of the barefoot and preggo types. I have lived in Florida, Georgia, and Louisiana, and my male friends think like I do.

And before I got married the majority of the women I have dated, slept with have been highly intelligent and have advanced degrees.

However, one thing they have all had in common is they have been physically fit and maintained their femininity. A phd who is stil a women who can pull off a skirt and heels, is much hotter than a pseudo hairy legged intellectual with an inferiority complex.

There is chemistry and attraction that transcends intelligence.

Not really surprising. If you've been told all your life that you're better than a certain group, just because of how you're born then having someone who makes you feel dumb basically threatens your whole self image. Especially if that someone isn't even trying to show you up. That likely goes double for the barefoot and eternally pregnant crowd.

Is 30s jargon still acceptable? 'Cus I love me a dame with a pair o' legs and da brains ta match.

I generally agree with the article.

However, attraction mostly depends on how much I've had to drink.

Does that explain why the hot/smart ones purposely pick guys that are far below their intellect, and are basically d-bags?

Women like some intelligent men.

If you're short with a high-pitched voice and an ugly face, it doesn't matter if you have a Ph.D (even if you are in good shape). You'll be passed over. Every time.

I tend to agree with this. Even with the casual hookup, looks are good, but if they open their mouth and I hear wind, the looks diminish in importance.

Well, you gotta be smart enough to get a pre-nup. If you aren't, then you are the dumb one in the relationship.

Honestly, any woman who looks at least okay and has a decent personality is probably going to end up with someone. Guys might talk about landing some supermodel type who has a PhD and likes playing computer games with him, but chances are he'll settle for way less.

Life's about managing expectations.

Smart
Sane

Ignorance isn't really a turn off because that's something that can be fixed (ignorance = lack of information), but there are some really idiots out there and that's something that just doesn't really go away.

The deal breaker is a butter face.

Guys like a woman who will raise their social capital.

If a guy runs with a crowd that values smart women (or has a smart woman as a boss he wants to impress) he'll date smart women, preferably those who are also hot and or really good at networking.

If a guy runs with a crowd that values big boobs/youth/blonde he'll date women who are large-breasted, and/or much younger, and/or bleached blonde, preferably those who pose no challenge to his self-regard.

/smart girls chase guys with smart friends
