Holy crap that dog is huge! I thought I was a bad pet owner because my jack russel is 19 pounds (about 4 or 5 pounds overweight, and he's starting to lose some of that weight). How on earth do you not notice something is wrong 30 or 40 pounds ago???

They've made him a harness to hold his fat rolls off the ground (if you go top the video I posted, there are two others - one shows the harness). But his back must be terribly sore all the time. He can't even exercise until he loses some weight from changes in diet alone. Fortunately, he has a foster human who understands the issues and is knowledgeable enough to do it without killing him.

But poor baby. He's got a long row to hoe.

A vet once told me that if you feed a pet according to what it SHOULD weigh, eventually that is what it WILL weigh.

Following that advice, I was able to bring a 36 pound dachshund down to 16 pounds. He had come from the same type of situation that was described in TFA - the only difference being that "Motley" was 13 years old before his original owners gave him up.

I feel good about his prospects. His foster home seems to be committed to seeing him through this.

The only way that is a good idea is if your new neighbors recently moved here from Korea and you were fattening up your dog to sell it to them by the pound.

Fed him food cause that was the only way the elderly owners could show their love.

Sad all around, hopefully happy ending.

That's the part that makes it so heartbreaking for me. All that freaking weight on his bones, all that pressure on his organs, and he's still so full of life and love for everything around him. He doesn't know it was abuse, and his owners sure as shiat didn't intend for him to get that way.

/really, I can't hate his owners too much

My Dachshund-Pit Bull mix weighs about 55 pounds and is not fat. I took him to the vet who exclaimed, "This is the most muscular weiner dog I've ever seen." His stomach has very adequate ground clearance despite his short legs, but when he lays down on his side, his legs stick out, unable to touch the floor.

About fifteen years ago, a friend of mine passed away and I inherited her pet leopard Ayesha. It was a great animal, but it had been overfed and when I got her, she was about one hundred pounds overweight. She couldn't jump, she couldn't climb, she wheezed like an old, old man going up a flight of stairs. It took me about a year to get her weight down and another six months to find her a suitable home (sanctuary near Reno).

It felt really funny to be giving my regular cats more food than a full-grown leopard.

No doubt about the owners.. Sounds like they meant no harm and things just got out of control with giving love via food. Kudos though to them for being aware enough to know they were doing harm (eventually) and letting it go.. Yeah that couldn't have been easy.

About 6 months ago we adopted Piper, an 8 year old Scottie. She was 28 1/2#, should be 19. We have her down to 20 right now, she looks GREAT, and is always active, running around with our other two dogs.

Here she is enjoying a paddle in one of my cement mixing pans. She is *NUTS* for water.

77 pounds is what my 11 year old son weighs.

Given, he's a beanpole, like his mom. But still. My tween son weighs as much as that dachshund.

It actually made me feel better to see that he's both mobile and happy. He's gonna be a rocket when he loses that weight.

Good that the owners realized they weren't able to do it right, and that he's in company with someone who knows how to make him better.

I understand that they wanted to love on him and food was the only way... but seriously. 10 pounds over? Yeah, time to mention it to your caregivers and do what the vet says to keep him healthy. But 77 pounds, on a dog that should weigh 1/3 that at most? Lordy.

Ah, Animal Ark. My son and I probably saw your leopard about a month ago. She looked sleepy. Then again, it was 95 degrees outside, so that probably had something to do with it.
