(Daily Mail)   President Obama's number one rule for his daughters on the campaign trail is that they be seen and not heard. You know, if John McCain had enforced this rule with Sarah Palin in 2008, things might have turned out much differently   (dailymail.co.uk) divider line 53

McCain DID have that rule with Caribou Barbie, which is why she didn't give a single open press conference during the campaign. No press conferences. No interviews that aren't vetted in advance. Never released her medical records. And now we have Rmoney refusing to release his tax returns and to discuss his business history. Secrecy, secrecy, secrecy.

You didn't see McCain babysitting Palin in her later interviews?

They didn't count on Palin being a backfiring loose cannon, is all. I wouldn't say it was their biggest mistake, seeing as most Republican Party ideology is a huge mistake. More like a severe miscalculation.

Catering a party and not realizing that many of the attendees brought additional guests, that's a miscalculation.

Picking a candidate with zero political, economic, and foreign policy knowledge, and knowing she had a teenage daughter that was knocked up, and vetting her so poorly that they didn't know her husband had drunk driving charges from 20 years ago, and that she had hired a private lawyer to deal with an ethics investigation into her abuse of power as governor.... well, that's just a huge f*cking' wallop of a mistake.

McCain was trying to cash in on disgruntled Hilary supporters. He and his staff assumed that women vote with their vaginas and would support any candidate who also had one. He also failed to notice, in advance of picking her, that Sarah Palin is retarded.

/thank god he didn't get elected.

They're a part of who he is... Personally I think it's awesome that children live in the White House again.

However, this article... not awesome. I presupposes a position that the President prefers that his children be seen and not heard... and that's bullshiat. They just don't try to have their children give political speeches, nor shout they. I have no problem at all with people being reminded that President Obama is a father who is still in the process of raising his children. This unnamed author is essentially trying to make a veiled hit piece.

I think, "DAILY MAIL REPORTER", can go fark itself.

Reminds me of criticism of Palin for using her Down's Syndrome Baby (tm) as a campaign prop in the election... now Obama's getting heat for not doing the same essentially.

It must be hard being a kid of the President. Especially in an age where all your peers have Facebook and mobile phones. You'd have to constantly think about what you can and can't say and you'd need Secret Service protection probably for the rest of your life.

At lease we know Romney doesn't stand for his kids screwing up Ann's chance at gold during the olympics. We'll never see Bapp again.

I don't think it was JUST about Hillary and polling. Romney and McCain faced the same problem: a base that did not trust their conservative credentials. So they both picked someone whose credentials were flawless. Palin was a poorly-vetted disaster driven in part by the need to find an innovative candidate. Ryan is a safer, well-known choice for a year that doesn't demand innovation.

The reason? Because they are Obama's kids. Now the big outrage coming from the right wing blog world is going to be" Why doesn't Obama let his kids talk to the media, what is he trying to hide?" Then Romney is going to make a comment at his next campaign speech about how his children are free to give interviews and are often interviewed.

Palin wasn't McCain's daughter, she was his running mate.

Likewise, Sasha and Malia aren't running for elected office.

But there is one big difference between the two families. Romney's youngest son is 30 years old. At that age, I'd expect any candidates kid to be able to speak at least a few words on their parent's behalf if they were running for any public office. Not obligated, mind you. But at least somewhat expected. Obama's oldest daughter is just starting high school. We should have no expectation for her to actively be a part of the campaign outside of the appearances she's already making (likewise for her sister, obviously). It's cowardly for to try to coax a negative sound bite out a kid who's not even old enough to drive yet.

Bottom line: Obama's kids are doing exactly what they need to be doing. Nothing more. Nothing less.

Kind of funny how I don't see this as anything but speculation in the article... Sure, they don't give interviews or speeches, or whatever, but not only are they not the President, but they're kids, so why is it an 'issue' anyway, another slow day at DailyMail or something?

Because they're children and it's not just that they "might say something", but that is part of it, but rather it's to shield them from the people who would make hay over what they said.
