I'm honestly curious what the success rate is for the card-slappers. Are there really enough tourists that call for "entertainment" to cover the cost of the cards, the people handing them out, and the "entertainer's" cut of the show? At this stage, wouldn't it be more effective to just buy a couple of billboards advertising the main company, and have the website advertise all of the "talent"?

If it didn't work, do you think that the pimps would waste money on it?

I assume that pimps, like any other business person, or any person for that matter, could be short-sighted. "We've always done this, so we'll keep doing this." Or, "it's too much upfront for a billboard, without a guarantee of success." Maybe margins are so tight, they can't try something new?

I don't know. I mean, I've been in a decent number of cities. I haven't seen card-slappers anywhere else.

It works. If a girl goes to your room and you agree to sex you furnish your credit card and its swiped on a cellular reader. The $39 quickly becomes $1000 plus. Instantly. The police don't care what happens on hotel property unless the management complains. And that complaint is usually going to be against the "John". I hope that you're understanding the words that are coming out of my mouth.

The slappers are all Honduran or San Salvadorian illegals. They work the cards for nearly nothing. One John and they are paid for the day. One raid by ICE and they are gone.

No. Its big business and the fix, as it always is in Sin City, is in.

good for Vegas for wanting litter off the streets. we live in a pretty rural area but the white trash think nothing of throwing their fast food waste out the window of their POS mobiles. farking sad. when i was a kid i lived down the block from a bar. there was always empties and six pack holders tossed on the lawns. one gets tired of that shiat.

When I first got to Las Vegas, it was right after the Mirage had been open for awhile, and they were still working on the MGM grand. The smutters (card slappers) RULED the sidewalks. At some intersections, they wouldn't let you cross the street if you didn't take a fistful of their cards, And some days, there were snowdrifts of discarded cards against the fences and buildings.

In Japan they stuck post-it note advertisements all over the entertainment district. In Fukiyoka, I saw the hand rails on a bridge leading into the entertainment district covered with them at 3am. Next morning at 7am, not a one anywhere.

"We're not actually littering. It's the tourists, the people who come here. But if it wasn't for them, we wouldn't be here. And I want to be able to make something better for them," Bartello said.

Yeah, those bastard tourists! If those filthy pigs weren't here, I would have no reason to be here!

Wow, talk about denial. Sure, it's the tourist that throws the card on the ground, but who's printing it and handing it out? It goes both ways.

I like to see their cleanup crew. I was an utility porter for a good long time and I like seeing a public area staff that knows what it's doing.

On New Year's Day, the real show is when all the public area people try to get the Strip clean before dawn.

Had a bachelor party for a friend where a bunch of guys pooled about 250 for a couple strippers to come to the room. They demand the initial cash upfront then flashed a boob for a literal second then say if you want more their going rate is around a grand each. Several pissed drunk guys demanded the money back. The strippers ran out before it turned into Very Bad Things.

That post had a lot of potential but the ending sucked.

But yeah, most of the whores in vegas are scammers. You are just as likely to score on the slots as the sluts. In the end, they get it all. Vegas is a joke.

Dubai can be like that too. The only place I ever met a whore who tried to steal from me was in Dubai. After we did the deed she got me separated from my pants on the pretext of a shower and picked the cash out of it. I'd have been much poorer had I not had the presence of mind to check it before I left. Getting it back from her was not pleasant. You have to look out for that sort of thing with freelancers. A house with a solid reputation is the best way to go.

"They're totally annoying," John Marquez, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, said on a recent evening. "I pretty much take them and toss them in the first garbage can I see."

Sorry, can't resist...

My first trip up the Saginaw River,
My first trip to the Canada shore,
There I met sweet Rosie O'Grady,
Better known as the Winnipeg Whore.

"Come right in, I'm glad to see you,
Slap your ass across my knee,
We will have some fun together,
Dollar and a half will be my fee."

Some were dancin', some were prancin',
Some lay drunk on the barroom floor,
But there I was in the northeast corner,
Screwin' hell out of the Winnipeg Whore.

Then, in there walked some sons 'a' biatches,
Must have been a score or more,
Oughta seen me shiat my britches,
Slidin' my ass out the whorehouse door.

Obviously they get enough.

As for billboards, on occasion you'll see one. More often you'll see a mobile one on the strip. I suspect the billboard companies refuse the ads.

I thought the price was lower than that.

As for the police--the organizers know how to deal with them. She checks in with control before going in and if she doesn't check in again they know she was busted--that means that room is a sting and nobody's going to send another girl there that night. Thus your whole sting operation nets no more than a couple of girls.

Furthermore, the girl is going to want to see evidence that you really are a traveler.

All of this costs money, the cost per bust is high enough that the cops don't bother. Thus they operate with impunity so long as they don't do other things to anger the cops.

Coelacanth: When I first got to Las Vegas, it was right after the Mirage had been open for awhile, and they were still working on the MGM grand. Wow! I've never seen them acting in a fashion like that. The behavior I've seen is very consistent--they put the card out in front of you but if you don't take it they pull their hand back at the last minute so you don't run into them. Never have I felt in the slightest bit impeded by them other than the simple disruption of flow caused by having non-moving obstacles in the way.

They're also pretty darn good at figuring out if a nearby female is actually a romantic companion, cards are not offered to such men.

The tourist don't have to take the cards. If they don't want them and are going to throw them down as soon as they get out of sight of the person that gave it to them, they shouldn't have taken it in the first place. How hard is it to not take something you don't want?

2012-09-09 11:23:47 AM
I applaud Las Vegas for trying to do something, but ultimately, they should have just gone for charging the businesses for each piece of litter found on the street. I think a $10 fine for each pamplet found on the street would quickly dissuade them from using card slappers, and might be more enforcable.
