FTFA - The natural question arises: why would the Republicans be hurt by their own convention? Two answers come to mind.

(1) The Ryan-VP bounce effectively used up whatever room there was for a bounce. This year, opinion seems to be fluctuating in a very narrow range: Obama up by 1.0-5.0%. Maybe there was no room for improvement.

(2) The GOP convention was not particularly inspiring. Indeed, the most notable event was Clint Eastwood's empty-chair routine, which overshadowed Romney's acceptance speech.

Might I add

(3) When your speeches are so filled with outright lies that every news organization has to double their fact checking staff to keep up with the BS, anyone that is paying even the slightest amount of attention would turn away from you.

Negative bounce? That's a pretty awesome pile of fail.

Romney wasn't even wanted by his own party. He doesn't even appeal to the dreaded Evangelicals, who don't believe Mormons are Christian, and being a Christian is just about the only qualification they need, along with being white. So when you have a base that is less than enthusiastic about you already, and you couple that with a convention whose most memorable speech didn't come from the nominee, but from a quasi-senile actor arguing with a chair (and losing).....what the hell did any reasonable person expect?

I know it's been mentioned before, but I found it odd that the two living former Democratic Presidents gave speeches at the DNC (one taped, one live) while the two living former Republican Presidents did not. I don't think we'll ever see George W. Bush at an RNC ever again and if so, at least not until he's an old man and it's a taped address, but George H.W. Bush isn't universally loathed....they could have invited him, or at least let him give a taped speech about Romney, if he was too infirm to appear in person.

Yeah, I can think of only 2 reasons why they didn't have Bush senior-

1. He refused to endorse Romney.

2. The RNC organizers simply wanted to avoid mentioning the word Bush the entire time, and didn't want anyone confusing senior with junior.

They did actually show a prerecorded video with Bush and Shrub (though I think it was only about five minutes long).

A third reason - if he had been there, there would have been even more questions about why Bush Jr. wasn't.

Was it along the lines of the comments Jimmy Carter made re: Obama, only about Romney? Like I said, I found it odd that neither of them were tapped to give an endorsement of some kind, or even a, "Well, yeah vote for what's-his-face over there."

I also didn't recall much mention of Bush the Lesser in 2008, and he was a sitting President at the time.

I couldn't bear to watch the whole thing, but I don't think they said anything supportive of Romney's policies...just "He'll make a good president."

Yes, but I don't recall him mentioning his brother by name. Bill Maher made mention of all this during his New Rules segment last week, when he said the GOP had to stop pretending George W. Bush didn't exist. If you watched the RNC, it was almost as if the Bush Administration never happened, aside from an appearance by Condi Rice.

Obama did O.K. with his speech. If he's getting a boost, it's either from Bill Clinton's excellent speech or the RNC's mess.

Really? [heads over to 538 and finds this]:
What's a bit more worrisome for Mr. Romney is that Gallup's reporting of the head-to-head results in its poll occurs over a lengthy seven-day window, meaning that only a minority of the interviews in the poll were conducted after the major speeches at the Democratic convention.

In fact, most of the interviews in the poll were conducted just after the Republican convention in Tampa, Fla., a period in which Mr. Romney should have been enjoying a convention bounce of his own.

Just, damn.

From BOTH the RNC mess and Bubba's speech. Plus Michelle's equally powerful speech.

And then the debates are going to happen, and it's just going to get worse for Romney from there.

If you assume no toss-up states (even a tiny lead means you win), Real Politics poll-of-polls has it 332 (Obama) to 206 (Romney). Even I don't think that will happen but it is funny.

Romney had considerable downward momentum when Ryan was named. Ryan stalled the decline IMHO. If not Ryan Obama might have had a 4 point lead. The Convention maybe gave them a 1-2 point bump but that has already disappeared as well. All down hill from now I'm afraid.

I didn't know anything about politics till a few years ago. Shxx was getting pretty bad here in Texas. I got educated on the subject and learned how to vote. I believe alot of "us" awoke from our "comas" that year and put Dems in a majority.
