As someone who cares deeply about indigenous culture, I volunteer to assist in the removal of coconut bras.

Hawaii is a melting pot of cultures, mixing not only various island cultures, but influences from China, Japan, Germany and Portugal and more. That article was crap. Now, if you want to make a distinction between what was culturally accurate before all the non-Polynesian cultures, versus after American annexation/takeover, that's one clear division. Still, one of the things that's authentic about Hawaiians is that they adopt and modify what they like of other cultures to suit themselves, that's admirable.

I've always thought of there being two Hawaii's; the authentic polynesian culture, and the notional, imagined fantasy island paradise created in the minds of mainlanders starting in the late 40's/ early 50's. As someone planning my first trip there, I want to see both versions of the place: I want to experience the tacky Haole version of the place made up from Elvis movies and Michener books and Don Ho. And I also want to see the real place and hang with the locals to drink in the miraculous beauty and fascinating culture of the "real" deal.

As someone from a culture whose people have on occasion, adapted European items and ways quite well, I'd like to say that a good number of Native Americans get along really well with our Pacific Islander brethren very well. And honestly, seeing pale Honkies with "tribal" tattoos, and they can't say who their Tribe is, people just need to lay off our Hawaiian compariots. My tribe use a lot of things, that while they may not be "authentic" Plains tribes artifacts, we made ours by how we use them. Same deal here.

To get the "real" Hawaii, I suggest going to the West Shore of Oahu. Very few touristy spots there (and the few that ARE there are insanely expensive). The beaches are to die for.

Or you can just go to Maui. The whole island is basically like the West Shore of Oahu...

South Maui is a colony of California. Go to Big Island.

Don't sweat it. Nobody argues over pizza or spaghetti being "authentic Italian", but the noodles came from China and tomatoes came from South America. The same goes for the Irish and potatoes. I dare you to go into any "authentic" European recipe book and not find items originating outside of Europe.

The culture even has a word for it: "Local". A restaurant that serves "local" cuisine will serve dishes adapted from Hawaiian, American, and various Asian cuisines that have worked there way into local culture.

A typical "local' restaurant will include items Chicken Katsu (Japan), Kalbi Short Rib (Korean), Adobo (Philippines), Chili (Mexico), and Hamburgers (US), as well as "fusion" items: the infamous Spam Musubi, Loco Moco, Saimin (a noodle soup)

For instance, Here is a sample menu from a local Chain "Zippy's". It's like a Denny's for the UN (except the food's pretty good).

Going to the Leeward side is one way to experience "the real Hawaii," but it's not something I'd recommend tourists do (unless they're headed to Ko Olina.)

If people really want to get an idea of what "the real Hawaii" is like, George Clooney's opening soliloquy (and the accompanying scenes of what life in Hawaii is like for some people) from The Descendants is a good start.

Actually, noodles were invented independently in both China and the Near East. There's archaeological evidence of the Etruscans making noodles long before Marco Polo.

Which might explain why Asian noodles and western noodles have completely different textures.

Joking aside, Zippy's is terrible similar to the reasons that make Denny's terrible. If you want to try a local chain restaurant in Hawaii, go to L&L. I heartily recommend you don't bother with Zippy's.

It's amazing how much of a magic word "Frybread" is. I have never found a single person who's eaten one who doesn't like it. I wonder if you try to serve a Loco Moco on a large frybread, if that is just too much awesome for the planet to handle?
