His last name is Wales? I knew they were "of Wales," but I guess I never knew that became their last name.

Grandchildren of the Monarch use their father's territorial designation as their last name, so in the military they have Wales. It just standard protocol, rather than using the Windsor name.

Of course when Charles becomes King it is highly likely the Royal family will become the House of Mountbatten-Windsor, and all non Royals now that are born through the male lines have that as their official last name, as does Charles who signed his wedding certification with this name.

As I understand it he was an air support co-ordination officer with an infantry unit. After it became public knowledge that he was in Afghanistan, they had to send him home for fear that his unit would be specifically targeted. The only way that they would put him back in combat was if he retrained as a pilot, putting himself and those around him in less danger. I'm not a great fan of the royals, but this guy seems OK.

Nope - last time he was in AFG, it was as a forward air controller, IIRC. So he has always been air in one way or another. But in that case, he was air support in a ground role.

Harry could've stayed home and partied, but he chose one of the most dangerous jobs in the hottest war zone on Earth. He doesn't try to do anything that gets him special privileges over other soldiers, and eats, sleeps, and works the same way as everyone else. He From all accounts, he has earned the respect of the troops that are serving alongside him. In my book, that gives him a "he's alright" pass.

Bashar and Asma's Infinite Playlist: His last name is Wales? I knew they were "of Wales," but I guess I never knew that became their last name.

The royal family have a name of the house, Windsor, but not surnames in the traditional sense. Of course, a surname is sort of necessary for certain purposes. The children of Prince Charles and Prince Andrew have generally used the geographical region of their respective father's primary title as a surname for things like their military careers, magazine subscriptions, and the like. This makes sense since they were each born and raised with the official names of HRH Prince[ess] _______ of [father's title territory]. So when they need a surname, it's not a big step to drop the "of" and have William Wales, Harry Wales, Beatrice York and Eugenie York.

Prince Andrew used Windsor until he married and was created the Duke of York. Since then, he and his daughters have used York when a surname is necessary or de rigur.

If and when Prince Harry marries and receives a dukedom, will likely switch from using Wales to whatever his ducal territory will be.

Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, married later in life than most, and thus did not get any title other than "HRH The Prince Edward" until late in life. For a surname, he has generally used Windsor, though he has also tried out Wessex. His children use Windsor.

The Prince of Wales has used, variously, Windsor, Wales, and increasingly Mountbatten-Windsor. His sister, Princess Anne, has used Windsor, her husbands' surnames and also Mountbatten-Windsor.

Uh, he is one of the specially trained soldiers, and doesn't get extra protection. He's not just playing soldier, he's in regular military service with everything that entails. The Royal Family has insisted on that with all their various kids for a long time, though the heirs generally don't serve front line duty- William, for example, flies rescue helicopters, which is valuable work, but he's not generally being shot at.

belhade: Wasn't his brother the Sea King S&R operator?

Yeah, William is.

Prince Charles trained as a jet pilot.

Prince Andrew (their uncle, and the old "spare" until William was born) served in the Royal Navy for 20 years and saw active service during the Falklands War, flying on multiple missions including anti-surface warfare, Exocet missile decoy and casualty evacuation.

He's the Spare to the Heir. Of course he gets extra protection. It may not be official, but this is the same dude who had bodyguards (who didn't do their job, but still) on his recent trip to Blab Vegas. Do other soldiers get that? Harry doesn't just 'lose the bodyguards' when he's in the military. For better or worse, those dudes in his regiment *are* his personal bodyguards. They're performing a very, very old custom. But Harry ain't out there earning his way like regular joes, except in the sense that he chose the military instead of outright partying like a Monaco.
