One team good, one team...not

That should have read:

One team good, one team not, but got lucky that the good team stunk up the joint with 7 errors

"Let's go out there this season and stink up the joint" pretty much sums up Nutting's ownership strategy, doesn't it?

Sounds like my "beer gut" softball league. We could end a 7-inning game 21-19 without allowing an earned run.

The pirates are luckier than they deserve. Cincinnati, St. Louis and LA all lost last night, keeping the Bucco's ridiculously slim chance of getting a wild-card slot alive.

Being familiar with AJ Burnett's line of work I am fairly certain he does occasionally wake up and decide to stink up joints. I know, he's been good this year.

Every since the start of August, it seems like the PIrates finally remembered that they were the PIrates. But hey, it never happened this late in the season in a long time, so congratulations Buccos!

Oh good another errors thread.

Oh hey AJ Burnett gave up 3 earned runs, Hisanori Takahashi gave up 3 earned runs, but the TEAM, as a whole, gave up...3 earned runs.

Anyone want to explain why that's a rule that makes sense?

Well mathematically, not THAT ridiculous.. they (with the Dodgers) are only 1.5 behind the Cards for the second spot with 23-25 left to play between them

Hm.. I.. actually don't understand that one.. are there earned runs charged to the pitcher that aren't charged to the team? Explain.

Yeah. I didn't watch the game, so I don't know the specifics, but in general:

Team makes an error with 2 outs. Every run after that in the inning is unearned for the team, because there should have been 3 outs.

Team changes pitcher. Because he came in with 2 outs and there are no errors after that, any run he allows in that inning is earned for him.

Thus, any run he allows in that inning is both earned & unearned.

I just looked up the specifics; it's what i just described. But the play-by-play includes this gem:

Single to LF (Ground Ball thru Weak 3B); DeJesus Scores/unER; Valbuena Scores/Team unER; Rizzo to 2B

DeJesus was the guy who reached on error before Takahashi came in, so he's completely unearned. Valbeuna was the first guy Takahashi faced (and walked).

Also, again, I didn't watch it, but I'm sure the "Single to LF (Ground Ball thru Weak 3B)" was totally not the work of bad defensive play. 100% pitcher fault.

Seven games over .500 with only 25 left to play. Pittsburgh is really going to have to step it up to keep their streak of losing seasons in tact. I have faith the team can pull of this miracle. They showed last night that they have what it takes.

I can understand it. A pitcher entering the game is responsible for anything which happens after, and not responsible for anything which occurred before he took the mound. From a logical standpoint this makes much more sense than scenarios where the starter leaves the game after giving up a two-out single, the reliever(s) then walk three straight batters, and that run is charged as an earned run against the starter. Or scenarios where the pitcher himself commits the error but it is still considered an unearned run against that pitcher's stats.

So, the Pirates have 509 Earned Runs this season.

The Pirates pitchers, added together, have 517 Earned Runs this season.

You're ok with this?

(And yes, both of those things you bring up are stupid as well. This is why ERA doesn't work the way people think.)

Or how about this:

Pirates Pitchers have an ERA of 3.84.

The Pirates have an ERA of 3.77.

Still have fingers crossed that the bucs can catch a heater and slide into the last wildcard spot.

They've definitely improved this year but they also still carry the ability to strike out 12 times in a game or boot a half dozen balls. I'm just thankful that it's not at the same frequency as in years past.

Go bucs. RTJR
