They don't use toll booths anymore, you get a toll tag and drive right through, or you drive right through and they mail you the bill with 20 cents added.

I wonder if it will be like the NE Sam Houston toll way that's three lanes, flows perfect, and all Easy-tag. Oh, and a traffic cop on every overpass catching speeders going 70mph in the 65mph zone while ignoring people on the adjacent non-tolled beltway going 75mph in a 55mph zone.

It doesn't make it right but I understand why you strictly enforce the roads with higher speed limits. You've already bumped the speed limit to a very high speed, so be happy with it and don't go 95. Also, since they aren't as busy, it's safer for the cop

I drive that road every day. I assumed they were there to catch people without an EZ Tag mainly. They always seem to be posted a mile past the scanners.

Love EZ Tag. Turned a 45 minute commute into 20 minutes.

The problem is you have to drive about 20 miles out of your way to get to the damn toll road, which makes it end up taking about the same amount of time. It will be great for driving to Dallas, or anywhere in that direction though.

I doubt anyone will be driving 85 though, the norm is about 95 on the existing parts...

This is the problem. They had to raise the speed limit or no one would use it. I'm still not sure how much traffic there wil be. It is a LONG detour.

It is a long detour, so I don't know if I'll ever really use it. Maybe if 35 is shut down due to an accident or construction. But the detour through Seguin will add 30 minutes at the regular 70-75 speed limit. I'm not sure 85 will make up for that.

I already use the part of 130 that they built a few years ago, that starts in Buda and ends north of Georgetown. Speed limit is 80, I think, no slowing down for toll booths, and even though it adds a few miles because it goes around Austin it's totally worth it when traffic is bad. There is barely any traffic on it and I breeze on by going mid 80s.

Now if only they'd finish fixing the rest of 35 between Austin and Dallas I'd be happy... and fix Dallas too... grumble...

Before I deployed, I would drive on SH130 at least two or three times a month from Killeen to Austin, sometimes to San Antone. This is one more thing to look forward to when I get back.

The best part about toll roads in Texas are the folks who refuse to drive on them because "I already paid my taxes to pay for that road."
Since I work in metropolitan planning, I try to explain how construction and maintenance costs are managed, but they don't want to hear it. They especially get their hackles up over the fact that it isn't TXDOT that manages this road.
Fine by me, because while they sit smugly in Texas' longest, narrowest parking lot (IH35), I can set the cruise and haul ass down the toll road.

Time is money, and I'd rather spend a couple bucks on tolls when I know I'll be moving along.

I-10 in west Texas is 85 and has been for a while. I drove out there last year and my truck can't handle it. The fuel gage dropped quickly.

The toll road in Houston is patrolled by bored constables, not busy deputies or officers who are responsible for patrolling the rest of the roads in Houston.

Once this stretch of toll road is finished, you will be able to get from Seguin to Waco without going through Austin. I-35 in Austin is terrible on a good day. If your trip does not require you to go to Austin it is best to avoid it.

Does this mean that the roads leading into Texas are going to be 85 but as soon as you get to the middle of Texas, they change to 55 as after you get to the middle of the state, any place you travel is going out of the state? So on the roadways going into the state, it is 85 but on the lanes on the other side of the median, going out of the state, the speed limit is 55? Just askin'?

Pretty much the same in reverse. Makes it a whole lot easier if I'm in Houston or Dallas.

I live SE of Austin and the only time the tollway makes sense to me is if I'm going to Dallas or to the airport. 130 is pretty much a hell of a detour if you're driving around Austin, but as a bypass to SA from Dallas, it's not too bad. 85 MPH between Georgetown and Seguin (once they get the Mustang Ridge to Seguin route finished) and then 75 on I-10 between Sequin and loop 1604 (East of SA proper) isn't too shabby since hardly anyone actually uses 130 (it travels mostly through farm/ranch country).

Psychologically, hauling ass on a less travelled road feels good. Realistically, you're not saving much in time unless you're driving on a busy travel day (Thanksgiving/Spring Break) when 35 is a parking lot.

Other than that, it's actually fairly useless for the average commuter. They're also talking about raising the toll charges in Januaury while going ahead with going TX-Tag/Mail options only. Speed comes at a premium, unfortunately.

Heard something about the plan to boost I-10/I-20 limit to 85 out in West Texas, which would be cake to those who know that region.

Toll roads are a scam. They got Rick Perry to basically sell off the state sovereignty to a private company- one from Spain, actually. Now Spain basically owns Texas, contractually they have a LOT of power here.

Remember the whole SCOTUS case about using Eminent Domain to seize land, only to give it to another party? That's what was happening here. The plan relied on it. The toll road company tells the govt what it needs, the govt uses its authority to seize land "for the public good", only to give it to a private toll road company for development. There was never any intent to keep the land for govt use.

The toll company basically told the state what to set the speed limit as. They wanted it much higher than the public-road option. And that was explicitly for sale: $67M for an 80 mph speed limit, $100M for 85 mph. That's what the contract said Cintra would pay for the speed limits.

That's a problem, because the whole principle of speed limits is supposed to be public safety, there is nothing to buy or sell if that's the case. If safety is met at 80 mph, fine, then payment isn't needed, if it's not, then payment should not alter that decision.

Subby doesn't know what he's talking about. Most State Highways and Farm-to-Market Roads, once you get out of the city limits, are 70 in the daytime, 65 at night. Interstates are the same, again the exception being inside incorporated areas where there is usually enough traffic density to make 70 a bad idea. There's a reason Mrs. Sapper and I have gotten very good at taking the back roads and navigating on the fly.

Really, the whole problem with IH35 is it is the only north-south corridor that connects 3 out of the 4 biggest metropolitan areas in the state. The new toll road as least gives people another option.

I love the toll roads in IL. They're paid for by the tolls, so they're maintained/plowed really well. Construction is always handled pretty well, with the work being done mostly off-peak and in strips they can finish mostly overnight or in a day or two. They just almost doubled the tolls too, which has made the drive a little quicker. And it's money I can see working. It doesn't go into some black hole of deficits and useless "Associate assistant administrator for coordination of local agency relations and community affairs" positions.

Really, I wish the tolls were a bit higher on the trucks at peak times to keep them out of the commuters way. They could pay it, time their drives to miss it, or just take their mandated sleep/nap before getting on.

The State generates revenue, the idiots that don't understand physics think it's a great idea with more "fredum" and all, and the insurance companies get to raise their premiums.

It's a wonderful idea if you're rich, powerful, and benefit from said situation, otherwise you're a stupid peasant.

I understand the physics, but people don't understand the engineering and safety standards. Cars were driving 65-75 forty YEARS ago. No crumple zones, no air bags, drum brakes front and rear, poor handing, and they weighed a TON. Most cars now have antilock brakes, airbags, 2 or 4 wheel disk brakes (better ones too), better handling, etc.
Traffic fatality rates are WAY WAY down. I mean WAY down. And they KEEP falling. And this is with speed limits going UP after the oil crisis.

People who complain about this are ninnies. Take out drunks, who likely won't be on a toll-interstate going 85 most of the time, and driving is rediculously safe, even at increasing speeds.

oops, meant to quote the guy talking about "idiots not understanding physics" and safety. It's an engineering problem. The "Physics" of airplanes are worse, by far, even excluding the drop from the sky, and they're safer than any road.

So the Autobahn is free and has parts with no speed limit (resposible driving required). If the road's that good, why stop at 85.

In reality it will be a 70 mile construction zone with traffic stopped for the hourly ambulance pick up.

I-10 aleady has long stretches of 80 MPH road now, which just means they raised it up to the flow of everyone trying to get across the state.

Cops in El Paso hang out right at the drop-off and bust folks, so beware.
