Sure she's pretty but how many Gilly sketches did you need to watch? The only recurring character of hers that I enjoyed was the "just kidding" character that one-uped everyone.

Know what I've never understood about SNL? Lorne Michaels hates it when people start improvising. But he keeps getting people from Second City, which is an all improv theater.

Lorne Michaels is the key thing that should have been replaced long ago. We've all suffered through way too many years of suck watching SNL just hoping for that rare funny skit to come along. Lorne must give head better than a $2000 hooker. Overpaid and incompetent: you're very American for a Canadian, Lorne.

I'm reminded of a saying I heard somewhere: "No matter how attractive a woman is, someone, somewhere, is sick of her shiat." In this case, several million someones. She seems like she could be funny, and sometimes she is, but she goes for the cheap laughs. She's like the female Adam Sandler, only worse, which I hadn't thought possible. I'd get annoyed or just uncomfortable watching her. Sometimes I'd feel sorry for her embarrassing herself, then she'd annoy me again, and that feeling passed. Any appearance by her on Weekend Update guaranteed several minutes of suck.

Reading back, that's pretty harsh. Huh. Didn't realize I disliked her that much. fark it, I'll post it anyway.

/Still laughed at the Laurence Welk skits. The weirdness worked in that bland, boring setting.

I agree. Sure, she looks decent, but just is not funny at all to me. Whenever i'd switch it to SNL just to take a look, she is just unbearable.

I wonder if either of them are batsh*t crazy too? Seems a lot of the post-70's SNL cast members are right wing d-bags.

Subby, Ms. Wiig was a gem that retired from SNL before I was sick of her. Therefore, she is golden in my book. To many SNL jagoffs don't know when to walk away. She took off right when I thought she was the funniest. Bridesmaids was the shiat as well. So eat a bag of dicks subby. Like a sack of french bread. One long footlong cock at a time. Then when you finish we'll talk comedy again. (I'll recommend: The State, the Kids in the hall, Tenacious D, Upright Citizens Brigade, Mr. Show, Screwdoored Horatio's and Exit 57.

(my bolding; note that it doesn't say, "completely improvised")

There are improv elements to a lot of their bits, but some of them are pretty thoroughly scripted. When you've got to take a show from written word to live broadcast in less than a week, having performers who are comfortable with that sort of fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants acting is a real plus.

2012-09-08 08:14:12 AM
I think the problem with SNL is it's too "polished" now. They have it running too smoothly like a machine.

The original show seemed like a bunch of people got together and just threw stuff on a wall for an 1 1/2 a week.

I know, it was a different time, drugs, etc.

But maybe stop following a 'formula' (political opening, some LONG skits, video (Sandberg or commerical parody), musical guest, news, etc etc)
And keep in mind I haven't watched regularly in years but this is what it seems like.

Truth be told, it's funnier when it's not perfect. The Debbie Downer sketches, especially the Disney World one, with Lindsey Lohan, was the funniest thing in years BECAUSE they all broke character.

(I"m also remembering Shandling back in the 80s who constantly broke the 4th wall and had a great sketch where he made out with his mother (Jan Hooks))

Wig was annoying as hell.. i thought i was the only person that thought that... BTW... to the person that posts a SUPER airbrushed FHM or maxim photo and says "yeah annoying" in pretty much any thread like this... yeah they can make anyone look decent with enough artwork... fhm even made rachael rae (or however its spelled) look farkable for 30 seconds... its all in the airbrush...

SNL needs more Jay Pharaoh and less stupid musical theater 'skits'.

She was overexposed, the same way Amy Poehler was. If she just had the regular airtime that every cast member gets, we wouldnt have had to see EVERY character she could come up with, recurring as often as a madtv character.

Not sure if Lorne is intent on making good with the female gender after decades of snubbing them, or if Tina Fey is blackmailing him.

Either way, Im glad Wiig is gone, since now I can enjoy her work. She is always a hit in every movie she's in. Poehler, too, completely turned me around with her work on Parks and Rec after years of hating her on SNL (I still have nightmares of her 'Annoying Niece' character saying Riiiick )

Wiig was the worst part of Bridesmaids. That movie was a funny movie, don't get me wrong, but if they had her out of it, it would have been a, "you gotta see this, I'm buying the extended blu-ray when it comes out" kinda movie.

/Wiig does, and always will, suck
//now as for The State, Mr. Show, UCB, Kids in the Hall....good on you!

and, yes, gilly was an appallingly bad character. but she is a farking genius.

I liked her "Game Show Diva" bit and the unprepared duet she did with Fred Armisen on the Update always made me laugh.
Gilly made me want to put an icepick in my ear.

wife and i have a friend who does that. we've known her for years. "we saw U2 at Glendale stadium, it was awesome." "THAT'S NOTHING! IN 1979, WHEN I WAS IN COLLEGE, THIS UNKNOWN ENGLISH TRIO PLAYED OUR GYM. I GOT TO MEET THEM, THEY WERE JUST WALKING AROUND BEFORE THE SHOW STARTED. THE POLICE! "

so the first time "that" character was on, i'm like, "who is that?" and my wife is like "OMG susan!" so that sketch was always funnier on a different level for us.

buntz: But maybe stop following a 'formula' (political opening, some LONG skits, video (Sandberg or commerical parody), musical guest, news, etc etc)

about a year ago, bill hader was on bill simmons podcast, and simmons had like, 5 ideas to improve the show. the only two i recall were getting rid of the opening montage of all the characters, arguing we only need to see it once on the season's first show. that would free up about another two minutes that could go for another part of the show. the other suggestion was instead of two songs, give the artist one song. that alone would free up 4 minutes for another sketch.

hader basically said, to you point, it will never happen due to the "formula". Lorne is locked into the idea of "this is what the show is, this is how we do it".

Lorne Michaels' job is secure because the network remembers when Dick Ebersol replaced him. Mind you, Michaels has had seasons just as bad ad Ebersol did at the start of a wholesale cast turnover. But those are lost among Michaels' good seasons, whereas Ebersol wasn't around long enough to sweep his inaugural season under the rug to that extent.

The sketches (while "scripted") are based off of improv jams. Then they go an still do some improv in-scene. So much fun to watch.

I lie Wiig a lot, but her recurring SNL characters were usually horrid. Lorne absolutely needs to go, but then he cares more for continued relevancy (which he and the show have) rather than being funny or sharp.

Never liked Wiig. Am happy she is gone.

I would love it if they would throw in 5-8 minutes of stand up from someone each week, like they used to. They have lost their way on musical acts, they would be better off taking a chance on a stand up.

It's as formulaic as SNL. It has got to the point that I can predict about 80% of the posts anymore. I keep coming back because it's a nice time waster.

I think the reason SNL sucks many times is not because the writers and actors arent funny I think they are forced to do skits that will not offend many people so their comedy is restricted. I wonder what an all out comedic show with no restrictions would be like. I remember reading somewhere that it took a long time to convince people to show the "dick in a box" skit because it was referencing a penis. They have to play it safe for the censors.
