Go Duff.

Alice Waters has lost a step (or the field caught up and passed her). How about Thomas Keller?

Also, I wonder how many people will see that and think, "The stupid expensive cake guy? LOL", completely unaware that Duff actually has some skillz?

Art Smith? Since most of the things in Oprah's sphere of influence are at best overrated if not outright terrible (cough "Doctor" Phil cough... and let's not even think about Jenny McCarthy), I'm betting "former Oprah personal chef" is an also ran in this one -- which is ok by me! -- but am open to being proven wrong.

People are starting to come off the DL. I've already argued the injury thing in other threads ad infinitum, so that's all I'm gonna say about that.
The Os are doing really well, and this is their best shot in a decade, but you may wanna wait a bit before you reserve the pony and magician for your World Series party.

I don't know why Art Smith would represent Chicago. I'm pretty sure Chicago would rather have 1) the guy who actually won the first Top Chef Masters season; or 2) the guy who outlasted Art Smith on the current season of Top Chef Masters; or 3) the woman who won season 4; or 4) the woman who was runner-up on the most recent season.

Soon, cue the whining about teams that have either clinched or been eliminated not trying hard enough to win against teams still in a race.

Yep.  Its going to be that time soon!

If the A's win the first wild card, they get a new stadium in San Jose and skip the 2012 postseason, which most likely resolves any tie for the first and second wild cards.

Sadly, this is the best chance the A's have at getting a new stadium. I'd give up the 2012 playoffs easily for that.

Yep, if I were a Chicago fan I'd definitely want Bayless (Rick not Skip) to represent my team, he flat out rocks Mexican cuisine.

Drop the silly & stupid second wild card. There, problem solved.

The second wild card brings more teams into the "race" and once again makes winning the division important. It's a good idea and it's staying.

It unbalances the playoffs and is a stupid idea that causes huge travel problems for everyone.

I'm not sure what you mean by unbalancing. The travel is a mess this year because the second wild card was ratified -after- the schedule was set, so they had to shoehorn it in there. Next year the schedule will be much more accommodating.

It's still pretty amazing that one brother can be pretty much universally liked in his industry (and in one that has a lot of catty, neurotic, crazy people) and the other can be almost universally reviled in his.

We had four teams in each league. A nice division series, championship series, world series format. Now all of a sudden we're tossing in a second, supposed, wild-card team for a playin game (like it's the NCAA basketball tournament for crying out loud). Oh! And remember the very nice rule that if the wild card and #1 seed are in the same division, they switch opponents? OUT THE WINDOW. Have fun with the twelve-billionth Rangers-A's series to open the playoffs.

But yes, you're correct about the scheduling being a problem because they shoehorned this stupid idea in at the last minute and it will be the only thing that will improve next year. Then probably one more year or two until we all realize that the whole idea is farked and go back to the almost perfect playoff system of 6 division winners and 2 wild-card teams.

Difference of opinion then.

In the previous system you had teams that clinched the wild card but not the division packing it in because winning the division didn't matter. To me, that's a far more grievous sin than "unbalancing".
The new system is win-win as it addresses this and more importantly (at least to MLB accountants), it brings a lot more teams into the hunt, which in turn drums up interest down the stretch.

2012-09-08 05:51:37 PM
And you had teams that clinched the division packing it in because the rest of the games didn't matter. So what?
