Expolaris: All this shiat does it remind me of a girl i was hitting on in college,

Met her at the library, small talk here and there. Weeks go by, kept talking. Eventually get to texting and things seem to be going well....when she reveals that she a "transethnic animal soul" to use her words. That she had the beating heart and soul of a proud lioness like from the Lion King. She wanted me to join her...pride of fellow lions....not all of which were the same gender as their "inner self."

No matter how long it's been since i've gotten laid, i was not that desperate.

But you could've grabbed her by the scruff of her neck, blew your load in a few seconds, rolled off and said 'What, that's how lions do it' and then told her to go hunt for some goddamn food.

To express their teen angst at not living in a fantasy world.

I picked writing stuff I'll never publish as an outlet for that desire, but whatever floats your boat I suppose.

It always amazes me that the Oatmeal Party image blows people's minds so much. I mean, goatse has been around for years and 2 girls 1 cup burned its way through the Interwebs a while ago, you'd think people would be numb by now.

If you want to really blow your mind, just remember that image is a single page of an entire comic book series devoted to diaperfurs.

See...i spent my time on 4chan instead of trolling Livejournal and Myspace. It's been many years since i've been back lurking but there are things i cannot unsee, mindfarks i cannot unfark. I spent my youth desensitizing myself to many of the atrocities of the internet...perhaps thats why i can trudge through threads like this without blinking much, but the ocasional ancient piece of history makes me herp so hard i derp.

tlchwi02: do furries need protection? they already wear animal masks and costumes. nobody knows who they are if they don't decide to make an issue of it.

actually tbh, i don't get the goals of these supposed otherkin. its not like there is any sort of legal ramifications if everyone acknowledges you are a cat/elf/cyclops reincarnation of shakespeare or if nobody does. so as long as they are happy saying they are a japanease vampire, whats the point if anyone else does

I don't think they have any real legal goals as much as they're mad that normal people see them as freaks. They mistakenly believe that some sort of official acknowledgement or protected status would put an end to that.

It's kind of one of those things that boarders on pornography. If it was anything other then oatmeal, you'd be banned right now. People expect Fark threads to be reasonably safe for work, so pictures of furries in diapers is kind of a shock to them. It's not like they're browsing 4chan.

When you think about it, It's not surprising there are furries into acting like babies. The whole denial of reality and not wanting to grow up is strong with that bunch.

That's one of the reason's it's a favorite image of mine, it's so "ZOMGWTFBBQ?!?!?!" but at first glance it's just a cartoon of cute anthropomorphic animals. Totes safe for work, just not safe for your brain. ; )

I understand that I had a fear of aliens (The greys) as a child from watching Communion and Fire in the Sky at way to young an age.

I finally got over it after years.

Then I was watching Lain and there is a scene with an alien in it. Damn near had a heart attack.

Eh, it looks more like layering fetishes to me. The thing I don't understand about most furries is why they insist on being lifestyle. They'd probably get a lot more mainstream acceptance if they were closer to weekend BDSM enthusiasts than a culture of leather daddies.

What a sad collection of attention whores/farked up personalities.

F*cking allah, I bet 90% of these people bring the hate on by simply acting so farked up.

Fark you. Go read 'Catcher in the Rye' ya loser.

Hahahaha. In college I got a sinus infection and had a bad fever, and one night I had a horrible fever dream where I was trapped in an enclosing organic pouch studded with thousands of rippling intestinal vilii. Fast forward a year later and I went to party at a friend's house, and as I walk in the living room the anime playing on the TV shows a young woman being consumed BY THAT EXACT METHOD. My head assploded.

I'd say 90% of them are kids doing it for the attention. The other 10% would think they were Napoleon or Jesus or something if the movement didn't exist.

This sort of stuff happened before the internet, but they couldn't get together and reinforce each others delusions.

Whatever. They can go ahead and think they're elves in human form as long as they permit me to believe I'm a handsome man in ugly man form.

Which is to say, that they can call me out on it at any time and tell me that it's bullshiat, and I can do the same to them, and if they work for me, I don't have to have separate unicorn bathrooms and separate elven bathrooms in addition to the normal three.

Huh, I've been noticing this creep into the mainstream here and there. I actually consider myself an otherkin (no, it has nothing to do with gnomes, that's just a D&D related in-joke). I was much more active in the community about 12-14 years ago, helped run a chatroom, etc. I have seen some crazy people, but some of the ones they dug up for this article have me face palming.

Now, hear me out. I'm being 100% serious here. Personally, I find that my self-identity is a personal matter, and I don't spend a lot of time trying to force it on other people. From my point of view, I recognize that all of this could be explained away by mental disorders or borderline Aspberger's or any other purely clinical issue. And I don't mind when other people interpret it that way. Honestly, that'd be the reasonable explanation. But having this identity that I have figured out for myself is meaningful to me, and if nothing else, it's a convenient label I can use to put my own thoughts and actions into context. It helps me understand myself.

I don't pretend that I know this is a deep part of my soul or just something weird in my brain (or something I've seriously deluded myself into believing). But, friends who wind up hearing about my "other" nature tend to agree that they noticed it all along, so it seems like the label works for whatever reason.

I can get "fictives" only in the sense that any fictional character in some way represents an archetype within the collective unconscious. As such, sure, someone can strongly identify with characters and creatures within fiction. That doesn't mean that they _are_ that character, but I could see it as a tool for introspection. But a freaking supporting character from a video game does not have the kind of psychological gravitas to qualify, and that guy from the article is just being a tool.

And the ones that claim to have so many different otherkin types... they're usually pretty embarrassing. I know some respectable people who have 2 or 3 different types, but most of the time, especially when they have some long-ass list and they're constantly "discovering" new types, these people are full (fuller?) of shiat. Mostly I figure it's someone who decided they were an otherkin so they could be special, but then realized they had to be more special than everyone else. Usually the types they discover coincide with new movies and video games, or else someone else they are dating.

So, in conclusion, yes, there are stable, mature otherkin out there who aren't just big attention whores. But from my time spent in the communities, most of them are attention whores, or at least young people who need to indulge in some escapism to find their inner voice.

HOW HAD I NEVER HEARD OF "OTHERKIN"?!!!?!?!? THIS IS THE MOST AWESOME THING EVER!!!

"his new set of otherkin (or those claiming to be otherkin) has grafted the academic language of identity politics and social justice activism onto their experiences. In doing so, they've transformed what Nick Mamatas' 2001 Village Voice story, "Elven Like Me," saw as a kind of new-age Burning Man-style subculture into a semi-politicized identity group."

I read that as "Eleven Like Me" -- so if you can be reincarnated fictional characters, can you also be reincarnated abstract mathematical concepts like a number???

SO COOL!

The line between Otherkin and Crazy

Otherkin: I think my soul is that of a hippogriff but I can still function and have a normal life

Crazy: I think my soul is that of a Hippogriff and I am unable to have a functional or anything that resembles a normal life due to my lifestyle choice and point of view

That's not what happens when your character dies in D&D at all. When that happens, you lean back in your chair, crack open yet another beer, and mock everyone else until you are asked to roll up another character.
