Evil Canadian: Wow, I guess this is not just a Canadian problem. We had a news article today about the same thing:

Same thing happens all over Europe. You cross the border from France into Luxembourg or Belgium into Luxembourg and there's loads of petrol stations (fuel is cheaper in Luxembourg than either) and when you pay, there's a little shop full of brands of cigarettes. Likewise, at Calais there's lots of shops selling booze for Brits coming over because the duty on alcohol in France is cheaper.

Bad: smoking cigarettes
Worse: living in just about any large American city, where the air quality is, at best, horrible. But let's ignore that elephant in the room and revile smokers as some sort of incarnated evil.

When I was a smoker, the last pack I remember buying in NY state cost $2.52.
Moved away in 2000 and quit smoking.
Went back for vacation in June, pack of Cowboy lights costs $11.77 in Long Lake.

I belong to a wine making organization; The South Side Social Club.We make about 600 gallons a year together, and I do another 30 or so gallons on my own, as do several of our members. Hell, I know no less than 20 people who make their own wine, and good/great quality wine to boot. I know more people who make wine then I do who grow pot. I also know a few people who have their own stills and make fantastic brandy and grappa. 170 proof is the minimum for Italian "moonshine".

I think you would be surprised at how popular a subculture wine making is.

Let's raise taxes on sin to make people stop sinning so much
Let's raise taxes on income to stop people from making too much income
They don't get the relationship. It's either a mental defect or willfull stupidity. I'm voting the latter

very cool. i wouldn't be that surprised seeing as how popular the home brew has gotten...
but that aside - i think the point stands - of all the alcohol purchases made in the US, what percentage do you think is done illegally? not even pointing out the fact that private wine making isn't even illegal...

e-cigs-reviews.org

Let's jack this into an e-cig thread again.

E-cigs are nonoffensive vapor (and could in theory be used anywhere), they have no tar, and the "juice" costs virtually nothing and wouldn't be very practical for govt to regulate because they're pretty small bottles with a long shelf life.

It's not perfectly "safe"- nicotine is still related to heart disease. We're not sure how much less harmful to the lungs a no-tar vapor is over smoking, but it's gotta be WAY better than smoking.

Also from what I can tell, people self-dose a bit better. I mean, once you start smoking a cigarette, most people have to finish it whether they need it or not, because of the expense and the fact that they had to trek out to a place where smoking was actually allowed to take a drag.

It's a harm reduction thing, it makes sense.

it's not about sympathy for smokers - it's about what government should have the power to do.
regulating behaviours like this shouldn't be one of them.

Regulate and tax tobacco because it's bad for you.
Regulate and tax sodas because they are bad for you.
Regulate and tax children't Happy Meals because they are bad for you. (nice try San Francisco).

The government thinks it has the DUTY to regulate behavior it deems inappropriate. Both sides of the aisle do it in their own way. The left goes after your health and how you affect the environment. The right goes after your relationships and sexual behavior. Both use the exact same arguments.

And with the government now neck deep into health care, it's going to get worse.

pute kisses like a man: / also, if you smoke, get coupons for the brand you like. that's the way to avoid high prices.

Yeah - every time I ever called the 800 number on a pack of cigarettes they sent me coupons. I suppose there's a limit, but I didn't call to get coupons - I usually called because I smoked a niche brand that was hard to find. If I still smoked I'd call every week and while smokers usually have a preferred brand there really isn't that big of a difference. In my early smoking days I used to buy whichever brand had the best promos. Oooh, a free lighter with 2 packs of Marlboros? I'll take those. Free t-shirt with the Camels? Okay.

Back around 1986 or so I don't think me or my roommate had to actually buy a single lighter. We had Marlboro lighters all over the place.

If you do still smoke and don't like the taste or hassle of refilling a Zippo go to Sam's Club and buy 50 Bic lighters. It's cheaper and it will take years for you to run out.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience."

Obviously you have never been educated on the concepts of regressive versus progressive taxation. The poor and middle class have been slammed with multiple regressive taxes in the past three years.

Heck, here in MD Dear Leader O'Malley just raised our Flush Tax by $60 p/month. What this means is that a person making $30k just got raped with a 2% tax on their annual income, but a person making $200k is only being hit up for a income tax hit of 0.30%. This is not just RAPE, its RAPE RAPE.

People like O'Bama and O'Malley aren't progressive, their just farking evil.

I see this same fun little game played on FOX News all the time. Six degrees of separation between any negative news story and Obama. His detractors mention him 3 times more than anybody else. It's almost like they have an agenda or something.

You are aware that it is the legislative branch, and not the executive branch, that enacts taxes, right? All the President / Governor / Mayor does is rubber stamp or veto the decisions of the legislatures.

Blaming Obama for a tax passed by a republican-controlled congress as a rider to a veto-proof bill is dishonest and inaccurate.

Even 10 years ago, well before bigger tax hikes, Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms officials were saying traditional organized crime is involved in New York's black market smokes, along with terrorist groups and street gangs.

Oh, FFS. Yes, the Taliban is selling cancer sticks to the unsuspecting public.

The only terrorist organization involved in any of this is the government and its $5/pack tax. Ditto for booze.

Exactly, smokers don't live to the point of needing five years of very expensive care when they hit their eighties. It's those healthy, jogging bastards who end up costing more because they just won't die.

So it DOESN'T cost society more because someone chooses to smoke.
