it is literally more profitable to hijack a truck filled with cigarettes than an armored car

And, what if your family don't like bread? They like...cigarettes? Now, what if instead of giving them away, you sold them at a price that was practically giving them away. Would that be a crime, Bart?

Then the ..... oh, fark it.

You people can't even keep from farking up a simple little thing like enjoying being able to smoke what you could grow in your own back yard.

Thank god that's a habit I never started. Bad enough to smoke, with all the carcinogens, but smoking just amplifies any other health issues you had unrelated to smoking and makes them worse. Tax the hell out of those fools who willingly poison their bodies I say!

Buy loose and roll your own. An ounce of pipe smoke costs me maybe $3.50 or so and lasts forever. If I dried it a bit and rolled it I'd have more flavorful, better smelling and cheaper cigarettes.

You price the taxes low enough and of course it would. Is there smuggling and criminal involvement with alcohol?

FTA: That's why it costs more than $11 bucks for a pack of smokes in Manhattan.

Eleven dollar bucks? That is expensive.

The question is: Should you do a GIS for "butt-smuggling"?

pipe tobacco isn't really for inhaling. gross.

i used to buy a can of American Spirit and a box of 200 filtered tubes for under $20, and packed them with a cigarette machine and had good, cheap cigarettes. when the federal tax on packs of cigarettes went up to a dollar (i think), the tax on loose tobacco went up over 1000%. suddenly it was over $40 for a can of American Spirit.

also, mentally ill people are way more likely than others to be smokers. taxing smokes means taxing sick people for their medication, and the mentally ill are generally much less wealthy than other people.

"Patients with mental illness have a higher incidence of smoking than the general population and are the major consumers of tobacco products. This population includes subjects with schizophrenia, manic depression, depression, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), attention-deficit disorder (ADD), and several other less common diseases. Smoking cessation treatment in this group of patients is difficult, often leading to profound depression. Several recent findings suggest that increased smoking in the mentally ill may have an underlying biological etiology. The mental illness schizophrenia has been most thoroughly studied in this regard. Nicotine administration normalizes several sensory-processing deficits seen in this disease."

People living with mental illness have a very high rate of smoking. A study by The Journal of the American Medical Association reported that 44.3 percent of all cigarettes in America are consumed by individuals who live with mental illness and/or substance abuse disorders. This means that people living with mental illness are about twice as likely to smoke as other persons.

it's not about sympathy for smokers - it's about what government should have the power to do.
regulating behaviours like this shouldn't be one of them.

Thanks for the citations that support your argument, but the menatally ill rarely vote, so they don't count much to politicians. So it doesn't matter unless one of the politicians has a mentally ill family member.

that's very interesting. i didn't know that but it makes perfect sense. not surprising given the number of mentally ill that "self medicate" with one drug or another.

With a good as inelastic as tobacco, the tax burden is most definitely not shared equally between consumer and producer. This disparity is what makes behaviour-regulation like this so egregious.

It also stands in the way of the inevitable demise of the industry as again the producer shares a much lower burden of the tax.

It's a disgusting habit...regulating freedom.
Of course, so is smoking.

I finally gave up smoking when Obama raised the tax on RYO taboacco 4,300%. Basically his very first act in office was to give the poor a good swift kick to the balls, and he has been nonstop kicking ever since.

Wow, I guess this is not just a Canadian problem. We had a news article today about the same thing:

FTFA:
Contraband cigarettes can be found in the homes of one in three smokers, said Bryans, whose organization represents 7,500 stores across Ontario.

The majority come in the form of 200 loose cigarettes sold in plastic bags and often originate from First Nations reserves, he said. Bryans said he has no issue with people driving to reserves to buy cigarettes.

I guess they've given up on the small personal use smugglers who make a rez run every couple of weeks and are after the bigger fishies now?

Smokers should remember what happened when the 2008 tax increase was announced. Cigarette prices rose several months ahead of it going into effect and not only that, the price increased by more than the tax. Suddenly instead of paying $48 per carton I was paying $70 per carton.

Seriously, fark the tobacco companies. If you smoke, quit. I don't care about your health. I just want to see the tobacco companies die.

Obviously you have never been educated on the concepts of regressive versus progressive taxation. The poor and middle class have been slammed with multiple regressive taxes in the past three years.

Heck, here in MD Dear Leader O'Malley just raised our Flush Tax by $60 p/month. What this means is that a person making $30k just got raped with a 2% tax on their annual income, but a person making $200k is only being hit up for a income tax hit of 0.30%. This is not just RAPE, its RAPE RAPE.

People like O'Bama and O'Malley aren't progressive, their just farking evil.

i used to work in a tobacco store, and it was comical how much every store would over inflate increased taxes. they basically used taxes as an excuse to jack prices.

whenever there was a tax increase, we only increased the price by the amount it cost us. so, basically, a tax increase meant we got more customers, because, respectively, our prices got cheaper.

/ also, if you smoke, get coupons for the brand you like. that's the way to avoid high prices.
// it's funny working in tobacco. people would come in and say they're quitting, and we would earnestly say that we will miss them as a customer, but best of luck, because your health is more valuable to us than your money. weird to wish for some of your best customers to stop buying your product.

2012-09-07 01:16:06 PM
I've been saying this when this trend started of jacking up tobacco taxes higher and higher. It just proves that politicians have very little understanding of basic economics.
