Then shooting each other over who's turn it is.

You're supposed to wait for the light to change before you cross?

It really is funny to be a a crosswalk when the cars have the light, not have there be any cars for a dozen blocks in either direction, and see a crowd form on the sidewalk waiting to cross. No wonder fascism caught on.

How much do you suppose that guy weighs? I'd like someone to mail him to me, and need to calculate postage.

Respect for the rule of law is what permits there to be fewer cops on the streets, not more. It camouflages the fact that the emperor has no clothes.

This is very nifty though it is only pong; which is a bit pedestrian for most people.

Sure I'll play Mario Kart with you, but I better not have to tone it down or I'll be pissed.

I've had so many women challenge me to Mario Kart, they get destroyed every time and accuse me of cheating. And I'm like "Yo, I didn't even put the tip in"

Germans are bizarrely obedient of pedestrian signals even when the streets are deserted. I crossed against a light once when no cars were in sight, and the reaction I got was enough to guilt me into not doing it again.

Yeah, I love it there because of that. Not a lot of police and stuff but socially you are expected to follow the rules. For example, newspapers stacks with honor boxes next to them, or when you get on the bus the don't check your ticket because they assume you have already paid for one.

It's a great place.

And it's just a good idea to learn to obey the rules out of habit, the little things are easy to take care of. Also, you got to know the rules before you can bend/break them.

Agreed. The examples you gave all boil down to (in my interpretation, at least) respect for others. Would love to go back.

Germans pretty much always wait for the light to turn before they cross. It's the weirdest thing. Not even other Northern Europeans do this. I regularly crossed the street with the walk sign off with my Scandinavian friends when I was there. The old German folk would give us dirty looks.

Corvus: or when you get on the bus the don't check your ticket because they assume you have already paid for one.

They have plain clothes checkers that roam the system and hand out fines to the Schwarzfahreren (literally black riders. People that try to ride public transit without a ticket).

It's really an efficiency thing, not because Germans are just that obedient. The Phoenix light rail, the Stockholm rapid transit and bus system, and the Budapest bus system are other places I've found that do this. Gets people on and off faster, and the fines are generally high enough to deter the freeloaders.

In transit planning, there's some cost/benefit to the type of ticketing system and the ridership level. The "honor" system like this resides in between low ridership systems, like the bus driver selling you your ticket on a suburban bus system (cheapest, but slowest), and the row of automated turnstiles on the subway in New York (more expensive, but just as fast as the honor system with a higher "catch" rate)

Czech Republic also, you wait for the crossing signal even if there are no cars. Try and cross when the traffic has the green and cars are coming. The cars won't slow down for you.
