Damn, who do these women talk to ? I have a handphone and never receive calls from young women. Maybe they just talk to each other ?

More than half of the 18 to 24 year-olds interviewed had credit card or personal loan debts of more than $14,000, while a quarter had debts over $20,250

Am I misreading that?! Or are they just misreporting it?

That's because women are stupid.

The study, by University of Newcastle academics Dr Margaret Griffiths and Bill Renwick, said teenagers as young as 16 had reported debt problems.

Who the hell is granting credit to 16 year olds, loan sharks? Or is 16 the Aussie age for being able to enter into contracts?

farking biased study.

A study of more than 2300 people advised by members of the Financial Counsellors Association of NSW last year found they had overall debts of $72 million. Sixty-five per cent had debts in addition to credit cards and loans.

That is only the people who sought finicial advice. Of course people who seek finacial advice are going to be in debt. Where is the normal group, that is, those who were not seeking debt counselling.

and in australia as well, where the per minute rates for users of cell phones suck compared to US "1000 minute free" plan.

2003-11-23 10:48:15 AM
What the fark do they talk about? You go to the mall and every girl in the joint is talking on the celly.

I put maybe 30 minutes a month on mine.

2003-11-23 10:50:16 AM
and as an ajoinder.

What else does that age group get on credit. Cell phones = obviously. Maybe a much smaller group cars, but there is decent public transport in most major cities.

crapo article.

Twenty-thousand dollars in credit card debt! That's like having a mortgage except you don't have a house.

Women need something to do while driving 20mph under the limit in two lanes with a blinker on the whole time. They can't knit or cook in the car!

2003-11-23 10:56:00 AM
Pyro, agreed. I used them for about 2 years but got sick of them. I mean I understand it's 'local' coverage, but besides their local coverage being shiatty their customer service was even worse. They begna charging a fee just to mail you a bill, or you could opt-out and just view your bill online. After 3 months of sending emails/calling attempting to get a login/passwd to view my bill online (since their way wasn't allowing me to get one) I ended up cancelling. I sent detailed emails to their corporate office.. not a single response.
T-mobile has me now.

2003-11-23 10:57:55 AM
Is it me or did they not say *anything* about it being women. That headline was extremely misleading and was obviously written by a misogynistic twat.

I don't get it either. I was eating the other day and a woman was sitting with 3 friends and she talked on the cell phone for over 30 minutes. Not one word to the people sitting in front of her, that I noticed. And she dialed at least one of those calls, so it was a conscious choice not to talk to the people you went to eat with.

(she was loud at times, hard to ignore)

//And no, it's not just women, but it seems to be mostly women

By the way, men are just as bad on the cell phone - yesterday, I nearly got run off the road by an idiot male that was talking on his cell who apparently couldn't drive in a straight line at the same time.

You think women are on cell phones more than men because you happen to perving at girls all the time. If you took time to notice the men, they are also yapping on cell phones.

I hate being on the phone - I'm not sure why people want to be available to be harrassed 24 hours, 7 days.

I'm slightly emotionally unstable most days.

You love it.

"i believe most male brains automatically correlate heavy personal cell phone usage with women"

that's because most male brains are controlled exclusively by their penis - if you are constantly looking at teenage girls, you are bound to see a few on the phone.

2003-11-23 11:08:51 AM
I hate having to answer the phone, and having one following me around isn't something I like either. They are good for emergencies, so I have one, I just usually have the ringer off.

2003-11-23 11:10:02 AM
Storyfan, you're right, they did not make any mention of it being one gender over the other. Someone's being sexist!

trolling

Rotary phones should make a comeback. You remember them right? When your phone says pulse or tone, it's where the pulse came from. Then they have the heavy cords that my cat jumps up on all the time... and they get those little weird twists in them that you can never get out no matter how long you work on them? It's like you stretched them out accidentally or something. Man those were the days.

/trolling

"The NSW Minister for Fair Trading..."

For a second there, I thought this guy had the coolest job on earth, but then I realized it meant New South Wales.

On the other hand, if there is ever an opening for the NSFW Minister for Fair Trading, I'm available.

2003-11-23 11:28:24 AM
I work at a doctors office, (infact there right now), and i hate it when patients come up to check in and are talking on the phone. cuz i need to ask them questions, i need to obtain information from them but i can't get a word in because they are talking on the phone. it pisses me off and all the peopel behind the dumbass waiting in line.

and although I think just as many guys use cellphones as girls, I think it's safe to assume that the way we use the phones is different. IE when a guy uses his cellphone to call his friend it's like this

guy #1-"hey wanna hang out tonight?"
guy #2-"ya sure"
guy #1-"hooters at 7?"
guy #2-"sounds good"
end conversation

when a girl talks on the cell phone it's like

girl #1-"hey you wanna hang out tonight"
girl #2-"ya sure, what are you gonna wear cuz i'm gonna wear this, oh my god did you see mtv today, n'sync is soooo cute, i would so dump my boyfriend for any of them."
girl #1-"like totally!!, hey did you hear what jane said that jody said about april"
girl #2-"oh my god i know, she's such a slut!"
and so on and so on.

And this is me talking to a girl on the phone

me-"um...hi"
girl-"it's $5 for the first minut, then .99 each minute after that, you ready?"
me-"ummm..ya"

/god i'm bord at work.

WTF? I was going to forward this on to one of my female friends who's always on the phone, but it loses a lot of punch when you realize that nowhere does the article mention gender differences. Sheez!

That's Australian Dollars, which converts as follows:

Aus $14,000 = US $10,102.40 = GB 5,934.23
Aus $20,250 = US $14,612.40 = GB 8,583.45

Most hookers spend more than that on crack each year.

2003-11-23 11:38:13 AM
Where does it say young women? It doesn't.
It says young people. Young men are just as anxious they'll lose their friends that they have to be on the mobile every spare minute. And not only that they've got to be playing with something every minute. I've heard it claimed men now spend more time on the mobile than women for that reason.
"Socialisation is not going on the home." And who is supposed to fix that? Natural selection sounds good to me.

More than half of the 18 to 24 year-olds interviewed had credit card or personal loan debts of more than $14,000, while a quarter had debts over $20,250

When I was 24, I had a $120,000 mortgage.

Guess I don't fall into that half.

Then again, I wasn't spending my money on stupid shiat like a cell phone. (I eventually got a cell phone, but only after the nature of my work absolutely required it).

2003-11-23 11:42:50 AM
Which is actually funny when you consider I've been working for a cell phone related company since I was 19.

2003-11-23 11:44:33 AM
I was walking down the street and I saw three girls talking on their cell phones who were obviously together. Yet, strangely, the person on the phone for each of them was much more important than the person standing next to them. This struck me as really twisted.

2003-11-23 11:49:25 AM

I keep my cell off most of the time, and very few people have the number.

Perhaps I'm just old, but I don't want to be reachable 24-7.

I've been seeing a lot of people who can't walk and talk at the same time. They just wander out in to the street.

2003-11-23 11:49:55 AM
what are they talking about?

What I notice about every single cell conversation I've overheard is this:

"Where are you?"
"I'm at XXXXX."
"Wait... ...WHERE are you?"

2003-11-23 11:52:24 AM
I wish I could get a rotary cellphone. That'd be the bomb. I have a rotary phone on my desk at home (it works! it could use some cleaning, as the dial is a little flakey, but I never call anyone anyway) and I like how you KNOW YOU'RE ON THE PHONE when you're using it. That, and my four-prong to modular adapter has a broken clip on the modular plug that I haven't fixed, so if you move too much, your call drops.

Hmm. Move too much and your call drops... ah, the days when I used Cingular...

2003-11-23 11:52:52 AM
I am a 20 year old with over $25k in debt. That is in a $7k student loan and $18k car loan.. the student loan has 2.5% interest rate and the car is on 3.9% interest rate. I also pay more than the minimum each month and I pay all of my other bills on time as well.

Agreed, the article says NOTHING about women...the only thing the asshat poster might have gotten the idea of women from is the picture accompanying the article.

POSTER = IDIOTIC ASSHAT

but, college girls are still stupid and financially irresponsible. One of the chicks I lived with in college had over 10K in debt on several credit cards. Good ole American currency, not Canadian. She'd think nothing of flying to NY to see some guy she met on line. But what do I know? I don't have debt, don't use the plastic, no student loans, nothing but a sweet government job with THE MAN.

2003-11-23 12:03:02 PM
It's a bit more difficult these days to teach kids the value of money. I was 10 when I got my first paper route. I also worked on weekends selling popcorn and peanuts at local sporting events. I was 13 when I got a part time job as a "cowboy" at the rodeo. At 15 I entered the food service industry. But our world has changed. I would never consider letting my 10 year old son go door to door collecting for a paper route or hearding cattle. But I try where I can. When we go out to eat, I have him add up the items we order and figure the tax. And I have him comparing prices at the grocery store.
It really hit him between the eyes a couple of weeks ago. We went ot the grocery store and bought Dr Pepper on sale for $1.99 for a 12 pack. With tax, that made each can 18 cents each. Then we went to Grandy's for dinner. He wanted to buy a "medium" drink for $1.40. I told him that when he had finished his drink, save the cup and ice. I was able to fill his "empty", $1.40 drink with my $0.18 can.

I think his Scottish roots may have taken hold.

Someone wrote this - Twenty-thousand dollars in credit card debt! That's like having a mortgage except you don't have a house.

A house....for $20,000. Where is this house? :) Maybe a trailer in a trailer park....but that's even pushing it. :)

2003-11-23 12:06:27 PM
InternetSecurityGuard, you had a paper route? Lucky guy. When I was that age the only work I could get is breaking rocks apart with my teeth.

PS: what the fark ever happened to Grandy's? I used to love that place.

I have a cell phone that I got for Christmas nearly two years ago. I've never gone over my minutes (got a bunch of roaming charges once, though) and I like to think I have a fairly active social life without having to be in close contact with my friends every second of the day. I still don't get those asshole students on campus I see at 8 a.m. talking to people on their little flip cell phones (with lame hip attachment for easy flipping access). I don't know what kind of friends these people have but all of my friends know not to call me at 8 am unless it's a damn good emergency. Telling me who they just hooked up with doesn't count as an emergency.

Hell yes men are just as bad. I especially love guys who drive around holding the cell phone with one hand while gesturing with the other. WTF? 1) they can't see you gesturing asshat, 2) what are you driving with, your knees? The capper is when they are driving as large of an SUV as they can find.

My buddies and I have a rule amongst ourselves. If you're driving and can't talk, don't answer the phone. If you answered the phone but have to go because traffic is getting bad, just interupt and say so. And nobody things anything of it.

Lebowsky yeah, an actual paper route. If I recall, I had around 70 subscribers. It was for the now defunct Dallas Times Herald. Since the Herald was an afternoon paper, except Sunday, I could handle the route after school.

Grandy's is still going pretty strong here in Texas. We go there about once a week. There is one to the South of me in Balch Springs on Elam Road And another one North up on Town East Blvd. There was one over on Buckner Blvd in Dallas but I noticed that it had closed the last time I was over there. I don't know if the original one in Sherman is still open.

2003-11-23 12:49:19 PM
I see a lot of people who talk on their cell phones while driving here, they are usually driving more slowly than anyone els?%?%???ng because their hands are tied up and they are concentrating on talking.

I have noticed that many more women are glued to their cell phones while driving. Though people using the hands free devices are slightly better than those who don't.

women are morons, they will talk about work, the guy at the gas station, what they ate, basically if you let them they will give you a stream of concious. that is why, when some stupid ho calls, since they are always driving whilst they call, you say four words, "are you coming over?" if they say no, you know its time to hang up the phone and save your ear lobes. fark biatches, you girls don't even cook any more. you want to think your paris hilton, or that retarded donkey toothed french face on rich girls, well take a look at your surroundings, and figure out how to work a wok and hang up the phone before you rear end me.

think about the average debt people carry in their lives...

college loans... 20k-60k
car loan........ 10k-20k
morgage......... 100k-200k

lets not even get into credit cards... i try to pay mine off completely every month... but i cant understand how families are carrying about 100k in just creditcard debt... it scares the shiat out of me to think about that...

now we get to add cellphone debt to it? god, i cant wait til they start taxing email

GimpyNip's either a bad troll or a raging idiot.

Meanwhile my wife and I are racking up rollover minutes like nobody's business. I'm thinking about calling my buddies in england just to get it down to a reasonable number.

Captain Obvious falls out of his chair.

ogt462, you're exactly right about a guy's cell phone conversation, in fact, all of your points are right.

If I were to make an assumption, I'd say most of these young girls still have the "Daddy's little princess" mode built into their head and daddy will pay their bill if they really need help. I don't own a cell phone (I'll laugh my ass off that I didn't get a brain tumor 40 years down the road) but if I did, I think I know how to use one responsibly. It's amazing how bad 18-24 year old credit card debt is! I mean, come to the realization that you're basically buying something with the promise to pay it later. I use the credit card alot, but I pay the FULL amount the day I receive the bill. I don't want to pay farkin interest because it gets really expensive as it continues to build.

Another assumption, I'm willing to bet that 2 guys can have more conversation in 30 minutes while watching a football game than 3 girls (all with cell phones) at a mall for an hour, unless of course there is a sale.

Here comes the science?

2003-11-23 02:51:43 PM
okay so I'm in that age group. I've gone over my monthly minutes a total of once causing an additional $5 in charges.

I have credit card debt but not much. And as of last week I have a car loan. But nothing is major or huge. Who the heck are these people who are bringing the average of debts up to over 14K?!

2003-11-23 02:55:27 PM
people with 100,000 credit card debt, good LORD, what did u buy?!

Haven't had a cell in 3 years and I do not miss it at all.

badgertrojan: I know a girl that had $200+ in cell phone debt

$200 and "debt" should not be used in the same sentence. $200 in two months is jack shiat. If $200 is considered debt, you shouldn't have a cell phone in the first place cause you're hellapo.

Ha, it's so true! In the hilton video, she pulls away from the guy to answer her cell phone!

I just got on a monthly cell phone plan. hated to do it, but the pre-pay plan was wickedly expensive. Hate to talk on the phone much at all, but there is one person that I always want to be available for.

No, not my boyfriend. My kid.

On the other hand, it costs $40 a month for a cell phone plan--that's what a regular phone line costs. Only reason I had a phone for a couple of years is so I could have internet.

2003-11-23 03:21:28 PM
cryinoutloud : what company are you with? Most cellphone companies have super super cheap plans they just don't advertise them. A coworker of mine has like a 30 minute per month plan for $10 with sprint.

2003-11-23 04:37:22 PM
nolimitbodnar: The car debt isn't really the same kind of debt, as long as what you owe is not more than the current value of the car. Worse case, you get into a jam, you can sell the car and pay off the loan. Same thing for a house payment.

Wow I'm a 21 year old female who doesn't own a cell phone and doesn't have any debt (scholarships and working pay for college).

Walking around campus, I can tell you I see just as many men as women on cell phones. Both piss me off equally. And I'll second the "WTF are they talking about anyway?!"

2003-11-23 05:10:47 PM
How ironic. It's a freaking joke dammit - Get over it already

/cue English majors

But seriously, get off the damn phone already.

Wow, so expensive? I live in Germany, my provider is E-plus, and I just got my bill. 12.53 euros/dollar. That is for sending probably 25 to 30 sms's a month, and talking a few minutes each day with my S.O. Here you pay for each minute you use, and when someone calls me, it does not cost anything then. I lived in California until a year ago, and hated this ### minutes per month. I would rather pay for what I use. And last I heard in CA, if someone called me, it still costed minutes. Not so nice.

2003-11-23 06:09:14 PM
oh no cell phone for me. if i'm not at home i don't want to be reached.
my debts are in student loans. getting an education so i can control the minds of cell phone users through electromagnetic waves.
mwhuahahah!!!

InternetSecurityGuard, you had a paper route? Lucky guy. When I was that age the only work I could get is breaking rocks apart with my teeth.

You were lucky! We used to DREAM about breaking rocks with our teeth!

When we were kids we had to wake up half-an-hour after we went to sleep and lick the road clean with our tongues, 7 days a week, for two pence a month.

-/and you tell the young people that nowadays, they don't believe you!

scientists duscover that 18-24 year-old women have disproportionately high cell phone debt

Their ears are glued to the phone even at the duscotheque.

The ex did this to me. she ran the verizon bill to 1800 before they turned it off. I kinda bounced the phone off her head when i got the bill. I make my final payment on it feburary 1st, 2004

2003-11-23 11:36:36 PM
When I was young, we didnt even have roads to lick. We had to lick our CAVE and we got paid in PEBBLES! AND IM ONLY 20 YEARS OLD!

Wow. I only used 16 minutes on my cell phone last month. And I think that was the highest since I've had it. I just don't see the need to be on the phone talking about nothing. Even my husband is amazed when I talk to my mom on the phone. He pretty much hears me say, "yeah...uh huh...okay. Bye." Usually not more than a few minutes, if that. I have a question, I call her, she answers, we say goodbye. Simple as that. No need to just chit chat for hours and hours. That's what emails are for :)

2003-11-24 03:31:44 AM
[More than half of the 18 to 24 year-olds interviewed had credit card or personal loan debts of more than $14,000, while a quarter had debts over $20,250]

Am I misreading that?! Or are they just misreporting it?

Not shocking at all. Think about it: that dozen grand or so includes not just credit card balances but also, say, car payments, or student loans. Considering that like half of 18-22 year olds are going to college, and most everybody owns (and owes the bank for) a car...

ogt462, you're exactly right about a guy's cell phone conversation, in fact, all of your points are right.

Neither of you have ever actually talked to a female, have you?

Aaah, pathetic, stereotype believing fools.

Guess I'm doing alright. My cellphone debt is $0. I get to talk to 18-22 year olds all the time, in person.

From UVAHOO:

"Young men are just as anxious they'll lose their friends that they have to be on the mobile every spare minute.:

no. Men are not 'anxious' creatures like women. The thought of 'losing my friends' has never crossed my mind. Ever.

women:

oooh *worry* *worry* *worry* *fiddle with hair* *check yourself in mirror* *worry* *worry* *worry* "ooh, will my friends ever call?" ooooh, *worry* *worry* "I had better call THEM in case, just so I don't lose them." (cue pointless 'cellie' conversation) *worry* *worry* *worry* "ooh, I dont think I'm popular enough yet. I don't have enough friends" *worry* *worry* *worry* (cue another pointless 'cellie' conversation) *worry* *worry* *worry*...etc.

Oh, and I bet that the only reason guys would have that high a cellphone debt is because they're letting their g/fs go on and on about pointless shiate, pausing only for the occassional:

'yeah'
'uh huh'
'ok'
etc.

I am not wrong. If a guy has a non-work related, 4+ minute-long conversation on a cell phone with another guy -- He's gay. Simple as that.

Yet another poor fool who has probably never had an actual conversation with a female.

Very sad, people. Very sad indeed. All you have to do to get these silly stereotypes out of your mind is look around you at all the Billions and Billions of women who never have and never will act like these dumb TV stereotypes.

I personally have never met someone like this.

Think of all the interesting people you could meet if you got rid of the hate and pre-concieved ideas.

TheDrake:

Then explain why I can't get my boyfriend off the phone as I say, "yes dear. Oh, that's nice. Did he? oh. uh-huh. Cool."

Macho stereotypes are stupid.

People who perpetrate them are hateful and foolish.
