I was walking down the street and I saw three girls talking on their cell phones who were obviously together. Yet, strangely, the person on the phone for each of them was much more important than the person standing next to them. This struck me as really twisted.

I keep my cell off most of the time, and very few people have the number.

Perhaps I'm just old, but I don't want to be reachable 24-7.

I've been seeing a lot of people who can't walk and talk at the same time. They just wander out in to the street.

2003-11-23 11:49:55 AM
what are they talking about?

What I notice about every single cell conversation I've overheard is this:

"Where are you?"
"I'm at XXXXX."
"Wait... ...WHERE are you?"

I wish I could get a rotary cellphone. That'd be the bomb. I have a rotary phone on my desk at home (it works! it could use some cleaning, as the dial is a little flakey, but I never call anyone anyway) and I like how you KNOW YOU'RE ON THE PHONE when you're using it. That, and my four-prong to modular adapter has a broken clip on the modular plug that I haven't fixed, so if you move too much, your call drops.

Hmm. Move too much and your call drops... ah, the days when I used Cingular...

I am a 20 year old with over $25k in debt. That is in a $7k student loan and $18k car loan.. the student loan has 2.5% interest rate and the car is on 3.9% interest rate. I also pay more than the minimum each month and I pay all of my other bills on time as well.

Hey, mutilato, that sounds like it should be the plot for the next "Teen Girl Squad." The only question is, which one would be left out -- Cheerleader, So-and-So, What's Her Face, or The Ugly One?

Am I the only one who still has a rotary cellphone?

I was thinking the same thing. However, I believe it is short for New South Wales.

Agreed, the article says NOTHING about women...the only thing the asshat poster might have gotten the idea of women from is the picture accompanying the article.

POSTER = IDIOTIC ASSHAT

but, college girls are still stupid and financially irresponsible. One of the chicks I lived with in college had over 10K in debt on several credit cards. Good ole American currency, not Canadian. She'd think nothing of flying to NY to see some guy she met on line. But what do I know? I don't have debt, don't use the plastic, no student loans, nothing but a sweet government job with THE MAN.

It's a bit more difficult these days to teach kids the value of money. I was 10 when I got my first paper route. I also worked on weekends selling popcorn and peanuts at local sporting events. I was 13 when I got a part time job as a "cowboy" at the rodeo. At 15 I entered the food service industry. But our world has changed. I would never consider letting my 10 year old son go door to door collecting for a paper route or hearding cattle. But I try where I can. When we go out to eat, I have him add up the items we order and figure the tax. And I have him comparing prices at the grocery store.
It really hit him between the eyes a couple of weeks ago. We went ot the grocery store and bought Dr Pepper on sale for $1.99 for a 12 pack. With tax, that made each can 18 cents each. Then we went to Grandy's for dinner. He wanted to buy a "medium" drink for $1.40. I told him that when he had finished his drink, save the cup and ice. I was able to fill his "empty", $1.40 drink with my $0.18 can.

I think his Scottish roots may have taken hold.

Someone wrote this - Twenty-thousand dollars in credit card debt! That's like having a mortgage except you don't have a house.

A house....for $20,000. Where is this house? :) Maybe a trailer in a trailer park....but that's even pushing it. :)

2003-11-23 12:06:27 PM
InternetSecurityGuard, you had a paper route? Lucky guy. When I was that age the only work I could get is breaking rocks apart with my teeth.

PS: what the fark ever happened to Grandy's? I used to love that place.

Like, NO WAY!!

I have a cell phone that I got for Christmas nearly two years ago. I've never gone over my minutes (got a bunch of roaming charges once, though) and I like to think I have a fairly active social life without having to be in close contact with my friends every second of the day. I still don't get those asshole students on campus I see at 8 a.m. talking to people on their little flip cell phones (with lame hip attachment for easy flipping access). I don't know what kind of friends these people have but all of my friends know not to call me at 8 am unless it's a damn good emergency. Telling me who they just hooked up with doesn't count as an emergency.

Nope, I just checked, still no cure for cancer. The "scientists" are busy right now.

This is the silliest thing I have read all week.

-
"We give health warnings on smoking, but we don't seem to give debt warnings, particularly for 18-24 year-olds using mobile phones," Mr Renwick said. "These people accumulate charges without realising it."

By the way, men are just as bad on the cell phone - yesterday, I nearly got run off the road by an idiot male that was talking on his cell who apparently couldn't drive in a straight line at the same time.

Hell yes men are just as bad. I especially love guys who drive around holding the cell phone with one hand while gesturing with the other. WTF? 1) they can't see you gesturing asshat, 2) what are you driving with, your knees? The capper is when they are driving as large of an SUV as they can find.

My buddies and I have a rule amongst ourselves. If you're driving and can't talk, don't answer the phone. If you answered the phone but have to go because traffic is getting bad, just interupt and say so. And nobody things anything of it.

2003-11-23 12:38:42 PM
I also agree that this is a very slow Fark day. I'm going to go find something interesting to do. Like stare at the wall.

Lebowsky yeah, an actual paper route. If I recall, I had around 70 subscribers. It was for the now defunct Dallas Times Herald. Since the Herald was an afternoon paper, except Sunday, I could handle the route after school.

Grandy's is still going pretty strong here in Texas. We go there about once a week. There is one to the South of me in Balch Springs on Elam Road And another one North up on Town East Blvd. There was one over on Buckner Blvd in Dallas but I noticed that it had closed the last time I was over there. I don't know if the original one in Sherman is still open.

2003-11-23 12:49:19 PM
I see a lot of people who talk on their cell phones while driving here, they are usually driving more slowly than anyone els?%?%???ng because their hands are tied up and they are concentrating on talking.

I have noticed that many more women are glued to their cell phones while driving. Though people using the hands free devices are slightly better than those who don't.

I think this "very slow Fark day" is a conspiracy to get all of us that are now experencing Fark withdrawal symptoms to sign up for TotalFark

My phone doesn't have a dial or buttons. It has a crank on the side. My phone number is 3 shorts, a long, then 1 short.

(The fark kiddies won't get this at all.)

If you have a phone "just for emergencies", then carry a charged one with you with *NO PLAN*. Phones with no plans can access 911, for emergencies...right?

Damn that GWBush

I meant to say...

Blame the invisible God of the christians

Oops again...

Of course he is guilty. He had children at the ranch all the time for sex parties!

Damn.

women are morons, they will talk about work, the guy at the gas station, what they ate, basically if you let them they will give you a stream of concious. that is why, when some stupid ho calls, since they are always driving whilst they call, you say four words, "are you coming over?" if they say no, you know its time to hang up the phone and save your ear lobes. fark biatches, you girls don't even cook any more. you want to think your paris hilton, or that retarded donkey toothed french face on rich girls, well take a look at your surroundings, and figure out how to work a wok and hang up the phone before you rear end me.

2003-11-23 01:15:15 PM
think about the average debt people carry in their lives...

college loans... 20k-60k
car loan........ 10k-20k
morgage......... 100k-200k

lets not even get into credit cards... i try to pay mine off completely every month... but i cant understand how families are carrying about 100k in just creditcard debt... it scares the shiat out of me to think about that...

now we get to add cellphone debt to it? god, i cant wait til they start taxing email

2003-11-23 01:17:10 PM
duscover = doh!-scover

Btw, weren't you supposed to say "still no cure for cancer"?

What? Are you kidding? Everybody knows Messenger RNA doesn't exit the cytoplasm! How will the cells talk to eachother?

I know a girl that had $200+ in cell phone debt, so they shut off her phone. 6 months later, she paid it off and within 2 months, she was back in debt and the phone was turned off again.

\sheesh

GimpyNip's either a bad troll or a raging idiot.

Meanwhile my wife and I are racking up rollover minutes like nobody's business. I'm thinking about calling my buddies in england just to get it down to a reasonable number.

Captain Obvious falls out of his chair.

ogt462, you're exactly right about a guy's cell phone conversation, in fact, all of your points are right.

If I were to make an assumption, I'd say most of these young girls still have the "Daddy's little princess" mode built into their head and daddy will pay their bill if they really need help. I don't own a cell phone (I'll laugh my ass off that I didn't get a brain tumor 40 years down the road) but if I did, I think I know how to use one responsibly. It's amazing how bad 18-24 year old credit card debt is! I mean, come to the realization that you're basically buying something with the promise to pay it later. I use the credit card alot, but I pay the FULL amount the day I receive the bill. I don't want to pay farkin interest because it gets really expensive as it continues to build.

Another assumption, I'm willing to bet that 2 guys can have more conversation in 30 minutes while watching a football game than 3 girls (all with cell phones) at a mall for an hour, unless of course there is a sale.

2003-11-23 02:26:48 PM
Here comes the science?

2003-11-23 02:51:43 PM
okay so I'm in that age group. I've gone over my monthly minutes a total of once causing an additional $5 in charges.

I have credit card debt but not much. And as of last week I have a car loan. But nothing is major or huge. Who the heck are these people who are bringing the average of debts up to over 14K?!

2003-11-23 02:55:27 PM
people with 100,000 credit card debt, good LORD, what did u buy?!

2003-11-23 03:01:51 PM
Haven't had a cell in 3 years and I do not miss it at all.

badgertrojan: I know a girl that had $200+ in cell phone debt

$200 and "debt" should not be used in the same sentence. $200 in two months is jack shiat. If $200 is considered debt, you shouldn't have a cell phone in the first place cause you're hellapo.
