Sorry subby, but Joss Whedon can't hear you over the sound of overseeing the entire Marvel cinematic universe AND creating a S.H.I.E.L.D. television series.

So instead of the greatest sci-fi screenwriter of this generation this will be made by the minds behind the new 90210 and Gossip Girl? Gee, I can barely contain my enthusiasm.

It's on the CW...so, either it's going to be marketed for the teen girl demographic (as in, the demographic who won't watch it) and it will fail, or it will be a show, like Reaper, what won't be just for teen girls, that will be killed by the network for more teen girl programming.

Either way, since it's CW, no one will actually watch it.

/yeah, totally expecting 'Beauty and the Beast' to last longer than 'Arrow'

You know, this kind of argument always pissed me off, so instead of throwing insults, I'll just follow the example of our lord and savior Jesus Christ, and offer you a parable :

Once upon a time, I had this motorcycle whose front wheel bearings needed to be changed. Now, this is something that is far beyond my capabilies, so I brought it to the family neighborhood Honda dealership. Two days later, I got my motorcycle back. I haven't driven it one hour on the highway that the one of the front disk falls off, hanging only by the brake fluid hose. I manage to pull over, fully aware meanwhile that if the caliper goes between the spokes, I'll go head over heel, and probably die.
It happens that the mechanic, when putting the wheel back, didn't screw the caliper properly. NOW, I'm not mechanic, the most complex operation I've ever done on my bike is patching a hole on the silence. BUT, although the mechanic knows far more about me about this subject, I think anybody could have realised that he did a shiat job on my bike.

The point of my rambling is, you don't need to be able to do something to realise that something has been done poorly.

Whedon co-wrote and directed a servicible crossover for an already mega-successful franchise with a hugely popular lead ator and added other superheroes with well-established fanbases. It would have had a $200 million opening weekend even if the story had sucked.

I liked the avengers, but since his release, people have been fawning over this guy like he is the next Spielberg or Cameron.

Oh, and his TV work has been vastly overrated.

Thanks for posting this.

I was going to add a long story about how back when I worked at Hi-de-ho comics, me, John D, and Gordo used to roast Joss for cherry picking all his characters and plot lines from the comics he read. He'd come into the back room to pick up his mags and we'd all start in on him, I swear, it was like therapy for the man.

He's not original, or particularly innovative. He is hard working and well read though (knows his comics) so I'll give him credit for that.

I must have missed the part where Joss Whedon wrote "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind". Because I thought that was Charlie Kaufman. Silly me.

I'm sure there were even better sci-fi epics that have been released in the last 20 years, but to say that he's the best of anything ignores pretty much everything everywhere.

From what I remember of my Greek mythology, Zeus would like it either way.

Since this is yet another CW teenage girl angst series, they probably won't even look at
Charisma Carpenter for the role:

Firstly he wrote the screenplay alone, and got sole credit. There were elements he had to keep, because they had already been set up in the other films, hence he shared Story By credit. But the screenplay was 100% his.
Secondly in the lead up all the tracking and predictions said it "might" take $170m, then as it got closer to the premier they were cautiously revised upwards to "maybe" $180m or so. It took $207m. Easy for you to say that it would "obviously" take $200m when no one else made that prediction before the opening weekend.
Thirdly Marvel are well known for dumping directors even when their films have been a hit, yet they hired Whedon to direct the sequel, and coordinate all the other films in the series and create a TV show. Maybe they know a bit better than you how much his input is worth?
Fourthly, Avengers had very small drop off in the following weeks, a sure sign that the audience word of mouth was excellent, and not just "serviceable".
Fifthly, top showrunners/writers today, even people here in the UK like Doctor Who head writers Russel T Davies and Steven Moffat rave about Whedon and his TV shows, even Dollhouse. And even Fox admitted they made a mistake in cancelling Angel. That's hardly "overrated" IMHO.

I loved seeing lots of Whedon haters (the real obsessed people on the internet) claim he was going to ruin Avengers. Then had to watch as it became a critical and popular smash hit. So funny.

Yes, because what were the odds that The Avengers, a plucky, independent film that didn't have 2-5 years of hype and a significant number of related films released would make a buck in Hollywood?

How often does a plucky, independent film without an advertising push make significant money?

It's not just the money anyway. The movie was almost universally well received by critics and the public, and was in no way considered a disappointment. I'm not saying you need to have liked all his stuff, but is it really that hard to not go all ZeroCorpse and just admit that he did a good job? Or does that hurt the nerd-rage boner you got going for ya?

No, dipshiat. What are the odds that The Avengers who have a huge base of basement dwelling emotionally stunted sub-humans who love to dissect and degenerate every effort to turn "their" genre into pop culture would like it? hmmmmm.... this could work. Start her off as a jailbaitolisious 16yo just discovering her epic ass kicking powers. Keep the teen angst to a minimum, and crank up the action, and you might just pull in the guys. In other words, a cross between Xena and Buffy will work just fine. If they try to break new ground, or draw in more teen girls, it will fail.
