There is a metric ton of derp in this state. The weather is sort of a nice break from alternate reality.

Dust storm. Watch the vid, it's pretty wild.

I've been in about 3 or 4 of those in Vegas. You have to get indoors otherwise you'll be breathing and seeing sand.

I lived near Phoenix for a few years and when some of my family were on the way to visit me (from SC) there was a similar dust storm. When we got my sister and her husband back to our house in Chandler she said to me "I heard there was a huge dust storm, did you see it?" My response: "Did I see it? I was in it."

For all the worrying and not much real action in the US concerning global climate change a good rallying call would be for the population of AZ be halved (By moving to other states) to actually make a dent in the amount of gases released in the US. Other than the Grand Canyon which is awesome, there is nothing in AZ Phoenix area that could not be done in an area with better weather.

It's the new trendy title for something that's been called a 'Dust storm' in the Phoenix area for about 150 years. Since the cool kids in Iraq had a nifty name for it, everyone decided to jump on the bandwagon in Phoenix.

Can you tell that I think this "haboob" shiat is utterly ridiculous? I hate trendy shiat.

Exactly, you pull as far off the road as possible, turn off your lights and take your foot off the brake. Multi-car pileups have occurred before because someone pulled over and trafic saw them and thought they were on the road. These thigs can be scary if you're driving, but if you're out in them, they are truly awesome to behold, as long as you can keep all of the dust out of your eyes.

Here are some of the tips for drivers that were provided (all of them common sense):

Avoid driving into or through a dust storm

Do not wait until poor visibility makes it difficult to safely pull off the roadway - do it as soon as possible. Completely exit the highway if you can.

If you encounter a dust storm, check traffic immediately around your vehicle (front, back and to the side) and begin slowing down

Do not stop in a travel lane or in the emergency lane; look for a safe place to pull completely off the paved portion of the roadway

Stop the vehicle in a position ensuring it is a safe distance from the main roadway and away from where other vehicles may travel.

Turn off all vehicle lights, including your emergency flashers

Set your emergency brake and take your foot off the brake

Stay in the vehicle with your seatbelts buckled and wait for the storm to pass

Drivers of high-profile vehicles should be especially aware of changing weather conditions and travel at reduced speeds

What's the consensus regarding the "Turn off all vehicle lights, including your emergency flashers" tip?  I can see arguments both in favor and against it.

Yeah, but you guys are stealing all of the weather we normally would have here up in Utah. I'm talking a Phx summer here. It rained last weekend, which was the first significant cooling trend and rain since something like May. Just hot and dry, hot and dry, hot and humid(but no storms), hot and dry, day after day after week.

That siad, it's nice to see Phx is actually getting some rain in the valley. The heat island has been breaking the storms up since before I moved in '06. You could watch the radar and the storm would approach, break into a circle, go to the other side of the valley, reform, and then beat the ever-lovin' shiat out of some place like Casa Grande because it hadn't expended any of its energy.

No arguments 'in favor' of it. As I stated upthread, people have followed taillights on the side of the road, thinking that's where the road goes, multi-car pileups have occurred and people have died. You don't want anyone attracted to your vehicle's location, you are far, FAR safer if nobody sees you. I know it seems counter-productive, but it's true.
