Not if you're a momma cat with a hankering for fresh owl, it isn't.

I took 3 cats and 2 dogs to the vet this week. Yeah, that WAS fun.

i112.photobucket.com

Louie got a great report from the mean doctor lady, down 0.01 pounds! he is now 14.1 pounds and a big boy. His brother Hermie was down a pound to 12.4 pounds, which is good, he needed to lose a bit (smaller body). Robin is up 3 pounds! He needed to gain so he is up to 12 pounds now. The dogs went for nail trims and they heard the dreaded 4 letter word: DIEt.

Poor Dyson.......he just got the outfit to go incognito!

So I've had some excitement (?) since last Caturday

Last Saturday, instead of waiting like my mom told me to, I decide I am quite capable of lifting a part of the new futon. Yeah, minus a chunk of my toenail later, I learned she was right.

Scared a kitty and got clawed up. Currently on antibiotics due to the punctures getting infected.

The best was I get home from the spay/neuter clinic on Sunday and when George jumps on me, he's burning up and wheezing. So, off to the emergency vet we go. Get down there, they take X rays and determine he has R sided pneumonia. Want to admit him but I have to cough up $1400 just to get him through thext 24 hours. Um yeah, would love to but that's almost 3 months of mortgage payments just in that down payment. So he comes home on antibiotic shot, 2 types of oral antibiotics, and antibiotic eye drops for 1/4 of the cost. He's doing fine, still runs like an idiot and eats like no tomorrow. Somtimes he'll start coughing if he runs too much though. Finished the doxy but still on the Cephadrops. Goes in to the regular vet on Saturday to see how he's doing and if I need to get more antibiotics.

I had 2 other cats that did NOT go to the vet this week. Actually 5 animals to the vet, shots, antidepressant pills for one of them and the total was $222. To me that isn't too bad.

And yes, I had fun with costumes......Hoover is thrilled.

Link & the tale/tail, on the new LoveMeow which the linkie is to & where the aww-worthy pix are:
A young Leopard cat was rescued from a construction site of a hillside in Taiwan. A woman spotted the orphan wildcat covered in mud near a few working excavators in the vicinity. She thought it was a domestic cat and took it home to her care. Soon later, she discovered that what she brought home was in fact a Leopard cat, a small wild cat often seen in East Asia. She contacted the local wildlife rescue center where the wild kitten was checked out by a vet and given the proper care it needs.
The kitten is estimated to be 2 months old and healthy. They are currently rehabilitating the little wildcat and getting it ready before releasing it back to the wild.

From Wikipedia:
The leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis) is a small wild cat of South and East Asia. Since 2002 it has been listed as Least Concern by IUCN as it is widely distributed but threatened by habitat loss and hunting in parts of its range. There are twelve leopard cat subspecies, which differ widely in appearance.
The leopard cat's name is derived from the leopard-like spots prevalent in all subspecies, but its relation to the leopard is distant.

My Sneaker literally fell over when I put a sweater on him. Hubby says it was due to sheer embarrassment, but I don't agree-- it was an attractive garment that looked great on him. (He is a handsome feline.) I tried to find scientific literature on it, but couldn't find any.

Anyone know about this? It's a hoot!

Riktor Pye went to the vet for his 3-year rabies shot. I'm a bad cat-mom...he shoulda had this done in June!
I was SO PROUD of the boy...he didn't fuss getting into the carrier, didn't wail in the car...and when we got to the vet he was cooperative not only about the shot, but about the thermometer and getting his Cestex (anti-tapeworm med) popped down his throat.
He wasn't happy...had the 'endorphin purr' going. His real purr makes things vibrate...the endorphin purr is just a shadow of the real thing.
Judging by his request for laptime, I've been forgiven. :)

The Ice Queen: So I've had some excitement (?) since last Caturday...(edit)

Hey there! So, I've been invited to an old buddy's kid's 4th b-day party on Sat., replete with 9 million of her family. It's going to be a looooong day. I mean, with free food and cake, but these things are minefields. Bad enough that last time, I had a bad reaction to my meds, and the in-laws of said friend think I'm more-than-likely a burn-out...at least she understands that I can't do a gift. Hope I make it home before 'Dinosaurs on a Spaceship' comes on. Last week was awesome.

/also, sorry to the FB-crowd on the matter of the Queen pics. :) It was for a good cause, and unless I update once a day, no one will know I'm still here.

A couple of pictures. Here's Snuffy on Tuesday. It was pouring rain (we got 2.5 inches from the remains of Isaac) but Snuffy had to had to go out. He found the only dry spot he could reasonably get to, he still got his toes wet getting there.

All in all everything is still crazy hectic, but we're all doing well. Have a great Caturweekend. everyone.

Oh, man. Glad everyone survived! lol Not a bad price for all.

The Ice Queen: So I've had some excitement (?) since last Caturday

Ouch ouch ouchie ouch!

I'm sure George will be fine! Poor little guy. $1400?!?!?! Good Lord.

On to page 2...

Why is it that cats lose all sense of balance when you put something on them?

My Sneaker literally fell over when I put a sweater on him. Hubby says it was due to sheer embarrassment, but I don't agree-- it was an attractive garment that looked great on him. (He is a handsome feline.) I tried to find scientific literature on it, but couldn't find any.

Anyone know about this? It's a hoot!

Hee! I think it's part embarrassment (although I'm sure the sweater looked awesome on him) and part pissed off.

Dragon let Minmin know yesterday that he's still feeling OK (though the fuzzy belly picture that she sent him might be the cause of that) and waiting on dialing down some medicines to test again (in case that was messing with the results). A worthy quote, swiped from today's SING dgst 5396:

brightened by a song in your heart
and warmed by the smiles of the people you love

Tho am actually awake, cake has 7 min to go to be done. It's so old, pre-heat & actual heat need set higher to achieve desired temp. Just hope it's not over-baking, it's to be auctioned tomorrow with a buncha other desserty stuff to Raise $$ for our Youth Quartet to go to SwAdelinesIntl competition in Denver in Oct. Final yr they'll be eligible, eldest mbr ages out this yr.
Forgot to offer sympathy to TheIceQueen for dropping futon on her toe & wrecking nail. She needs to win Powerball to pay off that vet bill, sounds as if.
Ahead to pg 2, Take The Cake -- out of oven before I do.  Slow typing....

My oven is just the opposite. I have to set it 25° lower than the needed temperature.

Now if I could just use the control on my oven to turn down the temperature outside. That would be heavenly right now as it's currently 91°. UGH!

Awww, that's too bad. :-(

But, more cake for you! :-)

I don't know what you use when greasing bundt pans, but I've found that PAM or a similar cooking spray works better than shortening, butter or margarine for that particular type of pan. With the latter you're more likely to miss a spot or two, which ends up with the cake breaking or sticking to the pan.

A Cat Calls

A cat calls, a tiny mew,
From one who is awfully new.

As they grow so does the call,
Listen, you will hear the tall

Tale your cat will tell.

Growing, talking,
Ever balking,

When you try to say,
"We just don't do it that way".

Oh memories of the agile,
Not old and fragile.

Voices strong though out life,
Silenced not by strife.

When the hour is near
For ones we hold so dear,

One last Mew,
Our hearts hold True.

One last sign,
A gift divine.

Silent.

Peace.

My theory is that their torso is largely responsible for their balance and dexterity. If you bind it in any way it seems that they need to re-learn how to move around. That said, I can't find any literature on it either.

I think my next kitty may come from Little Mews. It would be a nice drive and a fun party. Lord knows the wife and I need to take a road trip. We've been stranded here taking care of Alice for three years and are really suffering from cabin fever...Don't get me wrong, I would have done it for another ten years if possible.

tigerose, if orange you glad was #1 caption, you're doing quite well, Even able to select the colour you wished.
Will mumble for benefit of all, before I go feed 9 & help check blood sugar of 1, I've been trying all wk to clone brush out some white lettering with black shadow on an tealish blue, so I can caption in the actually-needed caption. Not working terrifically well, but at least the PR & Mktg chair of chorus hasn't come here with both The Force & The Bigger Hammer to beat me over the head for needing to take my time with it. She wishes to approve it all before Sep 17, our 1st remote Guest Night, when the signs must be up.

I've had pulled muscles in my rib cage from coughing and I can tell you it HURTS to cough. Can't imagine the broken rib mentioned above.

I do that every single time I get bronchitis (left side only) and you're right, it does HURT to cough. I've never had a broken rib, but it sounds really painful. Hope Alien will be okay.

You have probably already read it, but I was referring to The Ice Queen's post that Alien was fine, except for a broken rib.

Sometimes I wish I were a cat. Then the only cleaning I'd be responsible for would be my own self!

My theory is that their torso is largely responsible for their balance and dexterity. If you bind it in any way it seems that they need to re-learn how to move around. That said, I can't find any literature on it either.

Thanks! That's a plausible theory :)

leftteffticle: spinach gunk: Speaking of sherpes... How are sherpa18 and Dragon doing this week? Anxiously awaiting update on Dragon's most recent test results. Hope everything is OK. Sending hugs if needed.
Dragon let Minmin know yesterday that he's still feeling OK (though the fuzzy belly picture that she sent him might be the cause of that) and waiting on dialing down some medicines to test again (in case that was messing with the results). I'm sure sherpa can fill in with more details when he wanders in.
Deer Ceiling Cat: Plz use ur fuzzy benevolence to halp muh Dragons, or I will clawz u.

Hey guise ... I'm trying to play, but my internet is running at the speed of mud, and my system seems to keep coughing up a hairball. And PB is pissing me off to no end.

So if I have to settle for a text only post: Dragon continues to seem to be doing well, no changes that I can see, he continues to be his normal self ... I found out that my beloved vet took this past week off (and when I spoke to her partner, it seems that it is her first one in about six years, so i can't complain) and she actually called my vet to discuss my issues with her. Naturally, I could not ask all the questions I wanted to, but it is agreed that we will wait for further tests until the white boy has finished his step down of his thyroid medication, just in case that it may be skewing the results (that is the one high point of the previous blood work, his thyroid levels are actually a bit low - which means the pills are working, or it could also be a side effect of CRF). ... which means Tuesday at the earliest.

Meanwhile, I still have no idea what this going to cost, and since it seems that a lot of you want to help him (and since payment is expected when services are rendered), the Dragon Fund is now open. I asked you all to wait, since I did not want to receive extra funds that were not necessary, but CooperDaKat suggested an absolutely awesome solution - so, any money that I receive that is not needed will remain in the Dragon Fund to pass on to anyone else who might find themselves in a similar situation. If for some reason it is not needed in the foreseeable future (and I sincerely hope it is not), I will donate the entire unused amount to littlemews.

Mystery Science Theater 3000. It ran from 1988 up to 1999. They would play old sci-fi B-movies in a theater setting and rip on the movie the entire time. You were either fanatical about is as I was/still am or it didn't do anything for you. I'll send you a sample.

I used to participate in the Digital Archive Project. It began around a group of people who would gather MSTs that others had lying around on VHS and re-master them to DVD. It then expanded to other shows like SCTV, various comedy specials and cartoons. The board is still up but the site hasn't been active for a couple of years. I have all the MST episodes except the first four in varying degrees of quality ...mostly excellent, but some tapes just couldn't be massaged back into good shape (you can't clean up what isn't there)

I learned a hell of a lot about video/sound editing and DVD authoring and made some good friends over the few years I was involved. It was fun, but it took about two-three days processing time to clean up the average vhs on decent hardware back then. I could probably do all the processing in about two or three hours on my current PC.

...and a cat.

Serious suggestion: Talk to your doctor. Tell him that you are suffering from stress and anxiety from your break-up. When he offers you a script for xanax, inform him that you think you would be fine if you could just have your cat(s) with you. Then ask if he will give you a letter of medical necessity. Note that this is easier if your doc is also a pet lover. Good luck!

Cake not going to Auction, it broke coming out of bundt pan. Inadequate grease & flour suspected, plus my tendency Never To Bake. Either Plumbicon will eat, or we'll pitch. Don't really know anyone who'd fancy a busted cake for free gratis.
Need to visit storage area with notebk to list stuff my 2d cuz might wish. Meant to go after Pl ate, but minor medical crisis for me, now solved.

I opted for PAM when I made my kid's birthday cake (German Chocolate, from scratch) this year, and was reminded why I don't use cooking spray. I really should have used butter (I tend to over-butter to avoid missing spots) followed by either flour (which leaves an icky white residue - especially on cakes that are not fully frosted) or the dry baking mix. Next year, back to butter and dry mix! The cake was tasty, but burned and stuck in spots - not expected, as I use silicone baking pans....

If you've got stuff sticking to silicone pans, there's something wrong. The best I can think of is that you're either baking too hot or not letting it cool long enough before depanning.

I hate to be stupid, but what's the backstory on the characters in the seats?

[i211.photobucket.com image 500x375]

It has Max Headroom! OMG! I loved that show and have had a soft spot for Matt Frewer ever since :) I've been thinking about it recently because when I see Mittens Romney speaking, with that plastic face and his vacant eyes, in my head I hear his voice begin to stutter...

R.I.P. Caturday

[eye-roll.jpg]

A) You read through 300 comments in a thread that you despise and found a like minded simpleton to agree with.

B) Both are alts and you don't have the balls to troll a Caturday thread.

C) You two got together and decided to come in to shait in a Caturday thread.

D) You're psychic and you knew where to find the troll so you could agree.

I think that about sums up the options.

Three of them are truly pathetic. One is highly unlikely.

OK, shame on me for feeding trolls, I accept the blame for that. I love Caturday and read it nearly every week. I haven't owned a cat for many years so I'm a little short on material to post.

I guess I missed last week's trolling by that other person, so thought I would make a funny of their stupid comment by using the R.I.P. meme (something many people gripe about needing to go away...get it?) OK, sorry, in retrospect, it was a terrible and inappropriate joke. Sorry. I won't do it again, and I will have no further comments about this topic.

If you've got stuff sticking to silicone pans, there's something wrong. The best I can think of is that you're either baking too hot or not letting it cool long enough before depanning.

Poorly calibrated, ancient gas oven with dead (won't even wake up with new batteries) baking thermometer. Yeah - I may as well be using a wood burning cook stove - and that may even be better than what I have! I love to cook and bake, but my itty bitty kitchen and it's ancient appliances make it less than fun. SOMEDAY... meanwhile, I limit my baking to fraught-with-stress special occasio ...

There are three things I can suggest that might help you there.
1. Analog thermometer. Maybe $10? I don't remember how much mine cost.
2. Find a local building supply store and ask for an unglazed quarry tile. It's a lot like a pizza stone but a lot cheaper. It will take longer for your oven to get up to temperature, but the stone will hold so much heat that it will even out a lot of the temperature changes when the oven cycles on and off. Just lay it right on the bottom of the oven. Not on a rack, on the actual bottom of the oven interior. Should also be about $10, depending on what you get. Make sure it's unglazed or you'll kill yourself and your family. You can just leave it in there all the time, If you get the right thing, no household oven can get hot enough to harm it.
3. Granted this is the expensive solution but... new oven?

OK, shame on me for feeding trolls, I accept the blame for that. I love Caturday and read it nearly every week. I haven't owned a cat for many years so I'm a little short on material to post.

I guess I missed last week's trolling by that other person, so thought I would make a funny of their stupid comment by using the R.I.P. meme (something many people gripe about needing to go away...get it?) OK, sorry, in retrospect, it was a terrible and inappropriate joke. Sorry. I won't do it again, and I will have no further comments about this topic.

No one forces you to post in the Caturday threads, nor read them. Caturday is here to stay. Deal with it.

Also, while the thread is dubbed "Caturday" you're more than welcome to post pictures of your pets. Pictures of your dog, ferret, bird, fish, lizard, etc. are all welcome in this thread.

3. Granted this is the expensive solution but... new oven?

Thanks for the suggestions - I'll give 'em a try before my next baking foray. As for the new oven, that is definitely on the list, though not for awhile. My condo was built in 1967 and the only upgrades that have been done were what I've done following water damage sustained from plumbing mishaps upstairs (I figure I need someone to move in with a waterbed and aquarium so I can get upgrades started in my bedroom and living room). I haven't yet upgraded my kitchen appliances, but plan to in a couple years. It is costly and I need to both pay down some existing bills and save up for the shiny new toys!

Make A Wish Fdtn runs a daily ad in the Cinti Enquirer. Often it's a child like this, but sometimes an adult female, holding a puppy, almost always. Quite grainy & I didn't block out the extraneous text, as for the Guest Night sign for chorus later this month. 2 Guest Nights at remote location, but it's hoped signs won't need reproduced due to rain. Just bet the mktg/PR chair will want the posters printed on big single sheet, rather than in sections & spliced together.

While I really don't bake, I do cook, and IMHO, EVERY single prepackaged/frozen/microwavable product on the market today tends to recommend too high a temperature for optimum results. I always use a lower temperature/shorter time than recommended, and monitor it frequently. I understand about older ovens (I have one), but I have found this to be true even after I had installed a brand new fancy double wall oven (with all the high tech digital crap) when I had my house. YMMV. Or maybe you just don't have the right silicone baking pan :o)

Maine Coon Owners/Servants I need suggestions please! Peep is getting little matts on her belly and it is next to impossible to get her to "give up the belly" now that she knows I want to brush it. She's brushed daily (back, face, and sides) and she loves it. She will complain if you walk past her and the grooming basket without stopping to brush her. But try to get at the belly or her sassy pants and she will give you what for. As it's the end of the summer I am hesitant to get her clipped so any suggestions would be quite welcome!

Someone on here said they had good luck getting their cat to enjoy grooming if they put a few drops of lavender oil on the brush.

Rewards when she allows her tummy to be groomed, perhaps? At the end of the session, of course.

Perhaps it is uncomfortable or painful when you groom the matts. Try working on just one or two at a time. Perhaps simply cutting them off with a pair of bandage scissors to give added protection to the skin rather than trying to brush them out. Make sure to brush to prevent new matts from forming. I know that I would be reluctant to let someone who might pull tangles comb or brush my hair, especially if they had pulled before. This approach would cut only the matts, not the entire coat.

They can be quirky like that. Mia will bite my wife in the head for whistling.
My wife's allergies can really act up at times and during those times when she's trying to sleep she'll develop a whistle in her nose. It's hilarious (to me anyway) to watch Mia hovering around her head totally determined to find and kill the whistling monster.

Snuffycat gets matts, particularly at this time of the season. He's a Wegee, not a Maine Coon so there is a bit of difference in the coat, but I'm guessing not a whole lot. I find if I can cut through the middle of the matt with a nice sharp set of scissors the rest of it tends to break up on its own. Of course I have to have the band-aids and peroxide ready for this as Snuffy doesn't like any kind of grooming other than an occasional comb to his head.

Gizmo cat was a longhair who got matts on his flanks every year, I would use the scissors and/or a small set of clippers to cut his out. He would look like hell but at least I didn't bleed grooming him. I had to cut deeper for him as the matts did not break up as easily as they do for Snuffy. Be careful on how deep you cut, it's real easy to cut too deep, and it's hard to convince your baby that you really didn't mean to do that! I would sit on the sofa with him and trim as much as he was willing to have trimmed, even if I wasn't going to get it all. I figured it was better to get some if I was going to go back for more in another day or 3.

/Snuffy's got his seasonal matts going
//I haven't felt like bleeding lately
///Maybe tomorrow
////Gotta check the band-aid supply first

While I really don't bake, I do cook, and IMHO, EVERY single prepackaged/frozen/microwavable product on the market today tends to recommend too high a temperature for optimum results. I always use a lower temperature/shorter time than recommended, and monitor it frequently. I understand about older ovens (I have one), but I have found this to be true even after I had installed a brand new fancy double wall oven (with all the high tech digital crap) when I had my house. YMMV. Or maybe you just don't have the right silicone baking pan :o)

This sums up the results of pretty much everything I've ever tried to cook or bake.

Timid Goddess: StranahansBarracuda: Maine Coon Owners/Servants I need suggestions please!

That's what I've been trying to do. I cut a couple out yesterday before she curled up and made the area totally inacessable. They're small so I need to feel around before I find them and she just won't stay still long enough for me to locate and then snip them. She gets a treat after every brushing and nail clipping :)

I'm serious. I'm a disaster in the kitchen. I just don't have the patience. I truly think the stuff I try to make would taste better raw.

///Maybe tomorrow
////Gotta check the band-aid supply first

She's all squirmy and wiggly so I have to be really cautious when I break out the scissors. I've had to cut poop out of her tail and her floofy butt so those are trimmed when I can sneak up on her or have someone else to do the trim while I hold her. The matts are on her tummy right in the middle and they're fairly small. You can see a bit of a part in her fluff in the pic I posted. I think it gets neglected when she grooms because it's hidden when she gets her hind end and lower abdomen fluff. I think this is going to be a 2 person job with a bunch of yowling and a lot of apology tuna after.

Thanks to everyone for the advice! I'll let you know how it turns out :)

Time Oot for Dr Who also, then Late Feeds & Bloodsugar Check & a Med I didn't have to do. But need to be sure there's a good deal of cat under needle to absorb med; Ginger was really too high this eve.
Genuinely accomplished a bit of Going Thru Stuff. This includes finding cancelled cheques & bank records from literally a lifetime ago, that we may now shred! Well, not now, but maybe this wk. Also finding folding maps that do date back to when dinosaurs roamed the earth, & not just the ones on the spaceship earlier this eve on BBCAm. History may only have a point if there's someone younger to hand it down to. Also found Europa Camping + Caravaning 1973/74 which will recycle. That was very useful in its day, as we camped when on leave 99% of the time.
