Neither of these made the top 10? Superbad was number 4? That's farked up.

While I have no problem with Airplane! being the funniest, those should both definitely be on the list, or at the very least, Blazing Saddles should be on there if only one can be included.I got through about 17 minutes of Superbad, saw nothing worth continuing to watch the movie for. In my opinion, it was super bad.

Boudica's War Tampon: The reason why Airplane is so funny--and so many of the really good Simpsons are so funny--isn't so much because of content but pacing. Timing is everything. And Airplane was very well timed.

Exactamundo. It's no secret that the Zucker brothers and Abrahams studied people like Groucho Marx and Jack Benny to get that timing down. It's a lost art nowadays.

I wonder how precisely they calculated or weighted "laughs" in this study.

Is a guffaw worth the same as a chuckle? How about an sustained giggle? Is a reference to an earlier joke counted as a new laugh or is their a penalty for repetition?

Hot Shots and Hot Shots Part Deux should have been on there for laughs per minutes. Plus "National Lampoons Loaded Weapon" should be in there somewhere.

Not a Charley Sheen fan but he was lucky to be these movies.

Just saying.

Voiceofreason01: As funny as Airplane! is what really impresses me is that a movie with tits, numerous drug references (including a woman doing lines off a mirror) and an endless stream of sex jokes(two involving children) managed to get a PG rating. I'd like to see a filmmaker try that now.

PG-13 didn't exist in 1980.

There are no lines in Anchorman that aren't jokes. They don't all land, but that is how you should do a movie comedy. All jokes, no not-jokes.

I wont argue Airplanes placement on the list, its good. But Mel Brooks should have 2 movies in the top 10 and Young Frankenstein should be in the top 3.

List fail is fail.

When I was a kid, I thought the laugh track(Or studio audience, depending on the show) was a laughing guide... For a chuckle, you weren't supposed to laugh, for a regular laugh, you would chuckle, and when they lost their shiat, you could, too. Of course, I also thought that the radio was playing live music, and that if you stepped up close top the TV on soap commercials(Or other shower scenes), you could look down and see the rst of the naked body. This is the weird stuff a 5 year old thinks about watching TV in the 70's, I guess...

I raise you Peter Grant's f-word and c-word tirade, Robert Plant picking up two joints (not to mention his children naked in the beginning), and Jimmy Page's occult-laden intro and fantasy sequences in the PG-rated The Song Remains the Same.

/plus there was not a PG-13 rating back then

These days it would be PG-18. PG-13 basically reflects that 13 year olds are starting to become young adults.

Airplane has tits. A year or two ago, there was a shiatstorm because some 33 year old woman sent a 16 year old boy a picture ... of her tits!

Our society now behaves as if it's run by children who think anyone under 18 are the children. In VA if you boink a 17 year old 3 days before her birthday you can go to jail... wait 3 days and you can shag her rotten. That's a silly legal statute, but our whole society is starting to behave like this is what it actually believes is right and true. We act like 16 year old boys are pure, innocent children, like 6 year olds. Show a 16 year old girl your penis why don't you, while we're at it why don't you let a first grader play with it? It's basically the same thing.

Insane society.

While all comedy is cultural, Airplane! remains somewhat flawed for only being funny in English, and even then, probably only funny to Americans. (It's amazingly dependent on fast-twitch puns) ZAZ's cultural references were often very specific.

For better or worse, the other films on that list are broader in audience appeal.

I heard that Mel Brooks shot a lot more film for Young Frankenstein. Stuff that never made it into the movie. It would be interesting if he could go back and create a three hour version of Young Frankenstein. I saw "High Anxiety" three times in a theater, Mel. You owe me. Actually, "High Anxiety" wasn't that bad. But you still owe me.

Love Airplane, it is one of my all time favorites. But it is not the funniest movie of all time. All of Monty Python's movies are much funnier. And where the hell is Blazing Saddles? I have to wonder 1) who chose the movies and 2) who was in the audience?
