Missing from the Article....

"The employees of Radio Shack were too busy with their heads up their asses to notice the burglars coming in. A burglar then asked one of the employees for a 'wireless router' which made all of the store associates stand around dumbfounded and drooling while the robbers finished looting the store."

So they stole a couple monster cables?

2012-09-06 04:13:16 PM
Come on guys, $20 is a perfectly acceptable price for a 5 foot piece of 3.5mm stereo cable.

I recall sitting down with their catalog in... must've been '92 or so... just drooling at all the bits and pieces.

Ahh, there we are. Blissful nostalgia from back before they sucked.

That's, what, six CR 2032 batteries?

The store close to me is trying to find its roots- they have spools of cable and all kinds of compression-crimp ends, plus a healthy arduino section and other heathkit-type stuff. I was even able to get a wiring harness for my HTX-100.

It's a shame that they took fifteen years to realize that they're the convenience store of electronics, instead of going into overpriced phone and stereo land...

Three assorted packs of fuses, each containing one fuse you need?

Ametron in Hollywood reminds me of the old days of RadioShack. Rows of senseless A/V wires and connectors that you have to filter through in order to find the lone dusty box containing the one you need. It's truly a magical place if you're into that sort of thing.

My niece managed a Radio Shack while in college and told me that most of their profits are made from mobile phones sales.

Wait, you mean I was ripped off when I paid $4+tax for a single shrink-wrapped resistor?

Try $30, and that's for a 4' cable that's on sale.

Worked for them as a manager for three years after starting part time as a salesman. One of the last retail jobs out there where they pay good commission. If you hustle in a good area you can make 16/hour easy. By the time I made manager in Trenton I was Pulling thirty grand a year on a five day work week. Once you become a manager they really fark you on the hours (60 hour work week, mandatory). But I could support me and the wife, pay off a car, and have a good bit in the bank. Long as your numbers are good you will see some crazy bonus checks. But folks dont want to learn to be real salesmen anymore and learn their product. Thats why everyone bags on the store.

Radio Shack didn't always suck. Back before IBM came out with their PC, Radio Shack's TRS-80 was a damn fine computer.

When I was a boy, that place was a poor kids dream. You could build things you could never hope to buy. I used to go there with me pops with a bag of vacuum tubes and test them in a weird machine that did such a thing. We'd figure out which tube was bad, buy the relevant tube, and come home with new tubes and batteries, via our free battery club which only required visitation, not purchase.

Today, they are the most worthless electronics outlet imaginable.

The ultimate security system...

farm1.staticflickr.com

No need to buy the actual security system. Just put a few of those stickers on your doors and windows and the thieves will move on to someone who buys better stuff to steal.

I have several around me. The closest is a joke-satellite sales and cellphones and RC cars only. Another one has all the stuff you might want as a radioorwhatevermaker-it'shiat or miss. Franchise, so deal with it.
