First, and I realize you will have to take my word for it, I have a pretty good gut check on winning and losing. My gut tells me Mitt Romney is doing better than I expected and better than the polling is suggesting. Anecdotes are not data, but more and more a steady stream of anecdotes are piling up to suggest Romney is winning.

That's not even an "anecdote", that's last night's pizza.

Red State may not have any of your elitist liberal "facts" and "data", but boy howdy do they have gut instinct. And their gut instinct says Obama is bad.

Try to refute THAT, you socialists.

It's only racist when Democrats do it.

Nah, it's more like they heard/read Clinton's speech, looked at each other, and said (in unison): WE ARE FARKED!

This is just a side-effect to that epiphany.

Where I live, I'm afraid to tell pollsters that I'm voting against the Mormon guy.

Do they really think Romney will recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital? We'll upset a decent portion of the Middle East. Not that we should base everything off of the idea of not pissing everyone off, but I don't think it's a good idea to upset a geopolitical locale that hasn't been known for its stability.

He thought it was "great!" when I mentioned ex UT gov Leavitt is stacking the White House transition team with Mormons
When I asked him what he thought about Clinton's speech, he brought up Monica.

You might not see it, but Romney's friends say he is a really nice guy.
He might not show it, but Romney claims to be a very charitable person.
He won't tell us, but Romney promises to outline his policies after the election.
He won't prove it, but believe us when we say Romney has paid his fair share in taxes.

I might not have any proof, but Romney is TOTALLY GOING TO WIN! - The Ballad of Erick, Son of Erick.

It has always been a real thing. Most people trust their instincts on issues, and as such reflexively are more inclined to believe false things to deny true things if they do not sync up to their inherent belief. This is the origin of "the silent majority". This is where "harmonizing statisticals" come from. When the data does not match your ideal, suddenly you know to dismiss that data.

The biggest problem is that we are programmed to engage in this sort of behavior. Ask anyone if they would consider themselves a highly rational individual who trusts the numbers or if they are the type who are willing to go against the grain and make a ballsy decision in a situation. We trust our gut constantly, because the human mind vividly remembers situations where they decided to defy the odds because they were feeling lucky and came out on top, but quickly forgets situations where they made the wrong decision in a pinch.

So, does it make you a good racist if you know that being a racist is bad so you tell pollsters that your voting for the Black guy, even though you are not, therefore perpetrating hidden racism but kinda feeling guilty about it? Or, are you a good racist if you at least own up to your racism and tell people you are not voting for the Black guy, thereby exposing racism and allowing the country to finally come to grips with it?
