Sounds like a well thought out plan that'll work. I wonder if Evans and Fowler are aware that it's unimportant what the members of the board allege they did, by the time the state prosecutor gets done I'm sure the official charge will be attempted theft and perhaps mail fraud if she mailed her check into the power company. As far as their legal case for being reinstated, it's got a chance -- somewhere between slim and none.

I find it hard to believe this is/was the only incident if they're disbanding a $20k a month charity over $1300.

FTA: Evans believes the actions of the board were racially motivated.
"How can you vote the founding member out? Their accusations are unfounded," said Evans, a Glen Burnie native nominated for six Grammy Awards.

Umm, unless I completely misread the article, she admitted that she tried to steal $1,300 dollars from the charity. I'm pretty sure a non-profit board will fire anyone for that, no matter what your race, religion, gender or sexual orientation.

/it is too bad about the charity's collapse.
//it sounds like they helped a lot of people

I used to work security at a homeless shelter in Virginia which was founded by Christians and funded through public donations. The pastors' son was acting as coordinator/fund raiser/public speaker until he was caught stealing donations to spend on cocaine.

So, if you're caught in the act of stealing, there was no crime committed because you didn't succeed?

The more you know.

Way to kill a charity, pisscake. Being involved in a small organization* (a municipal car share) that handles cash in and out, I can attest that all it takes to kill one of these things dead is for someone at the top to frig around with the money. Just paying for a professional audit to figure out what happened can often eat up most of the cash.

* (We weren't embezzled, but are basically awaiting the taxman's mercy due to a past board member just, you know, not bothering to send in collected sales tax or keep receipts for several years. Due to circumstances, they may actually forgive us, believe it or not.)

Actually, it's nothing like that.

dingdingding! something is stinky in Denmark for sure. that charity was helping a heck of a lot of people. all they need to do is get some fresh blood in there to take over for a few that have grown tired and strayed. damn shame they are shutting down the whole hen house. this is a job for Foghorn Leghorn!

Fowler, who ran the group from her position as a teacher at Corkran Middle School, said board members accused her of stealing the money. She told Capital Gazette on Thursday she tried to use $1,300 from the foundation bank account to pay her electric bill. The check was stopped by the board.

People in power obviously use a lot of power.

It seems that Pamela Fowler is a real piece of shiat. Glad to see they closed down that stupid "Foundation", heaven only knows what else she stole from it. Her sense of entitlement along with her checkered financial history just adds to the drama.

This shiat's so scandalous it took the curl right out of his saxaphone. That's the real tragedy.

Yeah, I was wondering about that myself. That's an awfully huge electric bill for one person (even if you take into account that she may have a family). Even during the hottest summers, with multiple window ACs going, have I ever had an electric bill to reach a third of that.

From what I've gathered from the headline... she stole from a program so she could feed hungry kids and that those hungry kids would then in turn pay her electric bill.

Small non profits rely on credibility to stay alive. With the founding member found having tried to use the foubdation as a source of cash, their reputation is done. No one will give them $ ever again. The rest of the board also need to save their personal reputations. The smaller the community you serve, the closer the knives are to your throat.

I'm guessing this is just the tip of the iceberg. There may be more fraud or theft that would be uncovered if an investigation got going; and it might be easier to disband this charity with it's good reputation intact than continue and let everyone get tainted by the others' wrongdoing.

My guess is she has a $1,300 electric bill because she hadn't paid it in a while, and someone at the electric company finally got around to sending her a shutoff notice.

This, most likely. Best to just dismantle it before she drags the charity through the mud with claims of racism, a court battle that would eat up the charity's funding, and ultimately damage done to folks who only wanted to help and not use the charity as a slush fund for their utilities.

j__z: wait, where's the racism?

I suspect Pamela Fowler is black, and therefore if the board members decide to cut her out of the foundation for stealing then they surely must be racist. And to underline the racistness of the board, Pamela Fowler didn't actually stole the money that time because, as she eloquently put it, "exchange was not successful".
