What's the bad news?

mauricecano: Why is it small town newspapers always deem it necessary to put the address in every article about someone local? I never understood that and it usually only occurs with small publications.

The smaller the town, the more that they think that everybody knows everyone, and are basically all busy-bodies.

I grew up in a very small central Wisconsin town (approx 1,000 pop.), and the local weekly paper basically had what was essentially a "Mrs. Kravitz" column, with some old lady putting in there all the mundane things she heard about during the week..... "Mr. and Mrs. Jones had the pleasure of John and Jane Lemon over for dinner on Tuesday".... etc.

That was 25 years ago, so, I have no idea if those small towns still do those sorts of columns, but, the address thing in articles like that I think is a remnant of that.

Ahhh Aroostook County. We don't make it in the news often, but when we do, it's a beautiful display of FAIL.

If the loss wasn't intentional, it's covered. The insurance company will withhold payment if local law enforcement suspects arson, until such time as a determination can be made -- basically until PD and FD say "this wasn't arson" or until the homeowner is acquitted. Upon conviction of arson, the non-payment is finalized.

Two bug bombs in a small basement would be about right.

Raptop: Home was a condo on the fifteenth floor of a filing cabinet for widows and young professionals. The walls were solid concrete. A foot of concrete is important when your next-door neighbor lets their hearing aid go and have to watch game-shows at full volume. Or when a volcanic blast of debris that used to be your furniture and personal effects blows out of your floor-to-ceiling windows and sails flaming into the night. I suppose these things happen.

Do I want to know more? Perhaps not. Perhaps the image is sufficient.

Nowadays there is the convenience of twitter or fb so you can be the first to know what people are wearng at the supermarket.

Funny... never thought about those columns as being a "paper facebook", but, they essentially were. Actually more like someone "liking" a bunch of other peoples "posts".
