torr5962: Why does the DEM party, who should be reaching out to Independents and not their base, try to portray the Obamas as poor? I would never care if they were poor, rich, middle class or whatever. Its a puzzling narrative besides the fact that its untrue.

According to whom? Breitbart.com?

According to Michelle herself:
...she alluded to it by saying how "she and her husband understand what it is to struggle to make ends meet." She spoke of their early years--about how a young Barry drove a car that was "rusted out" and found his furniture "in a dumpster," how they both came from families that had to "scrape by."

You sound rich and disconnected.

Is it so incomprehensible to people that you can have difficulty managing and then later your situation can reverse itself and you can have money? Is it that "once poor always poor" and therefore if you become wealthy later you must never have been less-wealthy? Is it that only the rich can become rich(er) and the poor must remain poor? So that Michelle's account of their early years is a lie? I'm not even sure what the right-wing narrative is on this one.

What ARE you trying to imply?

This thread has fully convinced me that the vast majority of fark posters are mid-to-high functioning retards.

The farking article is merely a run-down of various media and pundit reactions to Michelle Obama's speech. That's it. Why shouldn't they quote the Onion while they're at it?

Damn, you people are stupid. It's really amazing how stupid you are.

When Obama went to Harvard he had a mini-refrigerator in his dorm room. To keep his dog steaks cool!

Obama went by the name Barry Soetoro during his time in Indonesia....Soetoro translates to "the spear that was thrust into the side of Jesus". Hmmm....that sounds just about right - I mean left.

These are starting to sound like Bill Brasky anecdotes.

As a child, Obama once used the scrotum of an antelope to parachute off the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro.

You get in by being an outstanding student.

And Obama attended Punahou on a scholarship.

I wonder if he would have got it if he were white?

White is considered a minority in Honolulu.

Asa Phelps: CreamFilling: Asa Phelps: Whitney Young is a free school.

You get in by being an outstanding student.

Or by being well connected. Not that I'm implying that's how she got in, but their list of alumni is typically is more notable for who their parents are than for their own accomplishments.

So are you saying that her family is well connected?

No, that's why I specifically said I wasn't implying that's how she got in. Jesse Jackson and Michael Jordan's kids? Probably.

Not for everyone. My daughter got in [and did quite well there] because she busted her butt to do so in sixth through eighth grade. And her mother and I are neither wealthy nor famous. In fact most of the Whitney parents I met were just plain solid folks who were a mix of working class, middle class, and upper middle class. The common denominator was kids with goals.

Ah 'underprivileged'... obviously if you are not 'privileged', you must be 'underprivileged' right? Now you are being pedantic and silly.

You're accusing me of pedantism while ignoring the gist of my argument to raise a semantic issue that doesn't even make sense? That's not very high quality commentary. Another way of saying that one lacks privilege would be to say, "they are unprivileged". The effect of my choice of the term "underprivileged" was to moderate your own point.

thismomentinblackhistory: There is one simple thing the Obama's could do to shut this controversy down: have their parents release their tax returns for the 10 years leading up to, and the 10 years following, their stint in higher education.

Mr. and Mrs. Obama?

We're waiting.

Considering his father died in 1982 in a car crash and his mother died in 1995 of cancer, it may be a little difficult to find a tax return they filed in the past ten years.

So to listen to Michelle Obama, when she met Barrack he was a dumpster diving sad sack that couldn't even afford shoes that fit.... and now he is the president.... and America has a problem with opportunity? How many US president positions should the country carry at a given time to accommodate all the hobos with aspirations?

Are you saying there isn't a powerful strain of southern white redneck mentality present in the frothing, mindless hatred of Barack Obama? This isn't just a fringe element, it's a significant part part of the right wing voting block, and the fact that none of the GOP candidates have made any effort to distancae themselves from the clearly racist vitriol that these degenerate inbreeds are spewing is the most disturbing aspect of American politics in the last couple years.

Your point seems to be that they were privileged and that conservatives complaints are valid. I would not refer to anyone who has to pay their own way through college as privileged and would wager that a sizable majority would agree with me. Conservatives are claiming Michelle lied about something. I have yet to see any reasonable argument that she did. By paying for their education in the way that 10s of millions of 'regular' Americans do, they do have some 'common man' credentials. I'm sorry if it bothers you that they are 'playing it up', but it is a political campaign and drawing contrasts with your opponent is a basic strategy. You have devolved into saying things like " not particularly humble origins" or "fairly privileged". You began the game of semantics trying to defend the idea that conservatives have a valid point that Michelle Obama lied about something. They don't.

Is anything she said untrue?

How is "scraping by" the same thing as "poor"?

I "scraped by" for more than a few years, living paycheck-to-paycheck, skipping any indulgences, nothing left in the bank at the end of the month, but I wasn't "poor", by any stretch. I could pay my rent, feed myself, have an occasional beer. Didn't have cable TV, didn't have a car. Got by fine with broadcast and public transport.

Are definitions and concepts really this hard for you, or are you just faking it, as usual?

Personally, Im pointing out that her story is false and misleading-Im sure they both had their ups and downs like most people, but to advance a platform that Romney is out of touch, someone is deeming it necessary to embellish the "struggle' that these two experienced. The fact is they both went to prep high schools and Ivy league colleges-Barack grew up in Hawaii for Gods Sake. No one can deny that The Prez and first lady lead very different lives than the rest of us. The whole narrative is completely unnecessary.
Should people not vote for Romney simply because he is rich? A rich family guy who doesnt need this scrutiny seems idealistic to me-a positive trait. I can understand independents hammering his policies as Gov and his plan for the future, but I cant get on board to the falseness of the Dem attacks and the fake stories of struggle from Michele Obama. I'll take their struggle any day.

I went to a prestigious magnet school (Hume Fogg), I also went to "the Harvard of the south" (Vanderbilt). My mother was a SSG during my H.S. days and a SFC in the army during my college years. Are you saying because I went to a good prep school and a well regarded private university that somehow the pay of an E-7 in the army is now "upper middle class"? Can you take a minute and review http://www.militaryfactory.com/military_pay_scale.asp and tell us all how 40-50k a year makes someone upper middle class? Honestly, let that bitterness flow through you. I know it's a completely foreign concept for people like you that just aren't that capable, but sometimes people are able to succeed on merit alone. Imagine, if you will, a world where you don't need mommy and daddy to buy your way to success. I know, as fantastical as rainbow-farting unicorns.
