This is a stupid argument. Nobody is going to elect a president that is a product of the US public school system. Especially any generation for the foreseeable future.

Actually, no. Romney worth about $250 million. Oprah makes $290 million per year. Oprah is worth over $2 billion.

Romney is worth a lot more than $250 million. $250 million is just the net worth he has deigned to disclose to the IRS

I don't even know if he's still around. I missed my 20th this summer and didn't make it up for the old man's 80th bday party the department threw for him.

I remember when I had my first Poli Sci class with Prof. Kaufman (with Monica Crowley, no less, blargh). After I answered the first question he directed at me he said, "Ah. You're one of Jerry's students, aren't you?"

He's Emeritus now, but he gave a great speech at the 2009 Baccalaureate.

He's also got a few lectures on YouTube if you're feeling nostalgic :)

Yup.

And I'm sure she would give it all up to be thin and pretty.

Oprah is even more of a mental case than her fans. Are there any other billionaires that are as obviously unhappy and insecure as Oprah?

This is correct.

I mean, if so, technically we can all start crappy blogs and get our blog posts listed in the Fark feed as news. I know it's not news, it's Fark, but I didn't know "Fark" also included retarded blog posts. And if that's the case, why aren't there more cat pics?

We demand more cat pics.

Yep, me too. I don't do anything having to do with the degree, but the Colgate (or most small private liberal arts schools, really) experience is amazing preparation to be a well-rounded adult capable of critical thought. I wouldn't trade that experience for the world, even though I'm still paying it off almost 10 years later.

Pfft, you should have sold off some of your stock portfolio to pay it off, like other folks during hard times.

It seems like Obama did NOT attend Columbia University until it was mentioned he rose up and struggled, then he went back in time to attend Columbia University so now it's a fact he was indeed there. Our president is amazing! He attended and didn't attend all at once!

I have friends who attended rich schools and they did not grow up rich. They rose up and struggled. And had college loans. And drove cars that were rusty and breaking down.

You can't really blame a libertarian rag for not recognizing what "middle class" is, since they've worked so hard to completely destroy it.

This is another lame attempt at painting the Obamas as the "rich elitists" -- not the guy in '08 with more houses than he could remember, or the guy in '12 with more offshore tax shelters than he can remember. The lying sacks of shiat wasting their lives writing for Reason can seriously go fark themselves.

I went to a private school (a year's tuition there was more than a year of in-state tuition at UMD). I'm pretty sure that my parents' combined income during that time was under $150k (and since my mom was out of work for a year or two, likely under $100k).

It also doesn't account for the fact that there are many people who find ways to afford tuition at a school (high or college) but are left searching for other ways of eating, sleeping and reading during those years.

If only Obama had sold some stock, he would have been able to fix his car and get better shoes.

Yeah. I don't watch her much either. I thought her decision to start OWN was really poorly timed and thought out. She should have done it 10 years earlier and she should have included her own show from the get go. Instead she decided to add/replace another channel in an already saturated market.

indylaw: Mikey1969: Hey buddy, "dishonest" and "untrue" are pretty much the same thing, what's your point?

I don't agree. Truth/Falsity has to do with the actual correctness of an assertion. Honesty/dishonesty is a judgment about one's personal character which suggests that that person knows the truth and speaks falsehood in spite of it.

If I genuinely but mistakenly believe that the capital of California is Los Angeles and I say "the capital of California is Los Angeles," what I said was untrue but I am not dishonest.

We know enough about Obama's upbringing to know that the "grew up rich" claim is bullshiat, but let's look at Michelle:

Michelle LaVaughn Robinson was born on January 17, 1964, in Chicago, Illinois, to Fraser Robinson III, a city water plant employee and Democratic precinct captain, and Marian (née Shields), a secretary at Spiegel's catalog store...Her mother was a full-time homemaker until Michelle entered high school.

Sounds like they were rolling in cash. Those big "city employee" and "secretary" bucks. And full-time homemakers are rich - just ask Ann Romney.

Sgt Otter: In TFA's world, claiming that a middle-class family struggled to pay for their kids' tuition for Ivy League schools is falsely claiming you grew up poor.

Well, if the Romney's were "poor" because they ate tuna casserole in the house they bought using money from Mitten's dad, then the Obama's claims of how they lived put them well into the "dirt poor living in squalor" category.

2012-09-06 12:15:44 PM
Such a blatant lie to make Obama look electable - and such blatant hypocrisy. They both grew up middle class....why hide from it - it is like they are ashamed of their middle class upbringing.....why do they hate the middle class so much?

2012-09-06 12:15:47 PM
They both grew up as part of the middle class and were able to parlay that into stunning success. Now they want to give other people the same opportunity. That is the message you dickholes, they aren't claiming to be uneducated moonshiners who get by on wing, a prayer, a tattered bible and the folksy wisdom of the purposefully ignorant rural class.

It's significant too. Anyone that's been around here for a while knows DIA has always been obtuse, unable to respond to questions, and ridiculously anti-government. I think the best description I ever saw of his posts was "toddler logic". But I've never seen him display such bald-faced rage before today, and with so little provocation.

I love this whole rich vs. poor argument, and its sheer absurdity. Nearly everyone in the upper echelons of politics are rich. From state government and up. Hell, even a lot of people in LOCAL government are richer than the average citizen. It takes money to even run winning campaigns for things like the local school board. I personally know someone who spent almost $50,000 running for school board of a county with about 150,000 people (she won, and her husband is a doctor.)

It's cute that the people love to posture politicians as being "for the common man" or "against the common man" based on their party. Although there are exceptions, virtually everyone in congress was wealthy before they won their position, and on top of that, many of them come from dynasties who have been in government for decades or longer.

If you think any of these millionaires are going to go out of their way to lose money by passing laws that would negatively affect them, you're an idiot. The most you'll ever get is the token law here and there that sounds great on the surface but ultimately doesn't affect them.
